TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!
Several years ago, Virginia McNeely, a member of Trinity Cathedral and faithful Education for Ministry (EFM) mentor, began to hear the call to the diaconate -- a special order of ministry that is dedicated to helping the church respond to the needs of the poor and marginalized. After a period of discernment with me and our Congregational Commission on Ministry,
 | | The Rev. Virginia McNeely, Deacon |
Virginia received the approval of our Vestry, diocesan committees and our Bishop and began a three year period of training at the School for Deacons in Berkeley. She graduated and was ordained as a deacon in 2012. For the past 18 months Virginia has served faithfully as our deacon, providing leadership for our many outreach ministries. This year she was joined by Steve Skiffington, who was ordained June. For the past few months, Virginia began serving part-time at All Saints Church near Sacramento City College. All Saints is an exciting congregation with a great deal of potential for growth. In consultation with the rectors of All Saints, me and Virginia, the Bishop has decided to assign Virginia to All Saints full-time starting January 1, 2014. This Sunday will be Virginia's last Sunday with us. She will be present for some of our Christmas Eve services as well.
I am grateful for Virginia's willingness to enter the diaconate and her leadership these last 18 months. Virginia began her diaconal ministry here after a two-year period when we did not have a deacon. She provided important leadership as we were stabilizing our homeless ministries and has helped us continue our ministries at Floyd School after the departure of Nancy Tennyson.
I hope you will be able to join us this Sunday when we will be thanking Virginia for her service and celebrating her ministry as she transitions to her new position.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Ever Wonder Where does Outreach Ministry money go? By Deacon Steve
Where DOES the Outreach Ministry Money go? Well, first of all I want you to relax, it doesn't go to me. So where does it go? That's easy, lots of places! The church learned long ago that we don't have the money or the people power to do it all. We need allies in doing God's work. There are many deserving organizations out there that share our concerns and our values and it just makes sense to support the work they do.
Historically Trinity has supported eleven ministries in the larger Sacramento community (and one on a national level) which do such great work that we make an effort to make sure they can stay in operation. Sometimes that effort means volunteers, sometimes not, but even if we sent one-hundred volunteers to each of their door steps, they would still need money to help pay for their operations - that's just common 'cents'. You can have a thousand volunteers, but if you can't pay the light and phone bills, you're out of business. It is with that realization that your Outreach Ministry team has voted to send each of our eleven ministry partners an early Christmas gift of $ 1,000.
In upcoming articles I'll tell you more about the finances of Trinity's Outreach, but for now I just wanted to share the good news that your dollars are working hard in eleven organizations that work every day to make this part of God's creation just a little bit better.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
Saturday, December 21 at 7:30 pm
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service celebrating the birth of Jesus, which is traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of carols, anthems, and hymns.
- Brich an, O schönes Morgenslicht (Christmas Oratorio) - Johann Sebastian Bach
- Christ the Appletree - Stanford Scriven
- An Advent Procession (Veni Redemptor Gentium) - Donald Pearson
- This Little Babe - Benjamin Britten (Cathedral Choristers)
- A Tender Shoot - Otto Goldschmidt
- In the Bleak Midwinter - Harold Darke
- Here is the Little Door - Herbert Howells
- On this day, earth shall ring - H. C. Stewart
- Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich hier - Johann Sebastian Bach
The format was based on an Order drawn up by Edward White Benson (who became the Archbishop of Canterbury) for Christmas Eve 1880 in Truro, England, and has since been adapted and used by other churches all over the world. The best-known version is broadcast annually to millions of listeners around the world from King's College, Cambridge, on Christmas Eve, featuring carols sung by the famous King's College Choir. Please join the Trinity Cathedral Choir and Choristers as we begin our Christmas celebration!

TREE TIP
by Ann Rothschild
Fairs, Mugs, Lids, and Gardens.
TREE wishes you all a blessed and ecological Christmas as we celebrate the holy gift of Jesus into our lives. TREE also thanks you for supporting and spending your hard earned money at our Alternative Christmas Fair. Thanks to this and my family's Secret Santa system, I have not entered a mall yet!
Remember too the donation idea where you pay for a goat or chickens for a needy family and send a card about it to the person you want to honor -- www.oxfamamericaunwrapped.com; www.planusa.org;
and www.episcopalrelief.org are a good start.
And TREE applauds the suggestion in last week's e-newsletter, about using lids to prevent coffee spills on the carpet, to bring your own mug with lid to prevent cluttering the environment with discarded cups and lids. Yeah-bring your own insulated mug-and for every one we see, TREE will issue you a free doggie poop bag-excellent stocking stuffers for your friends with pets. Report to us at the TREE Second Harvest table, if it is up (oranges, persimmons?).
The Garden Committee is working hard under the leadership of Anita Williams, but still needs tools and funds to make it a "growing" concern. See Anita at coffee hour or any TREE member with your ideas, or if you wish to have a plot and exercise your green thumb. We look forward to planting in the new year.
