"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
 Greetings!

Starting Saturday November 30th, the 5:10pm liturgy of word and Eucharist will go on Advent hiatus. The service for these weeks will be a space for us to pray, talk, sing, imagine, and collaborate about the shape of this community moving into the future.

The Saturday evening Eucharist service has grown into the weekly worship and rhythm of the Cathedral community over the years. While the service was created from a longing to reach out to populations curious about the cathedral, and to experiment with a variety of creative liturgical and musical forms, many years and much clergy staff transition has passed since this foundational visioning and practice. In addition to many recent shifts, attendance at the service has been steadily dwindling with counts ranging between 5 and 15 people. We currently worship using a basic Rite II form from the Prayer Book with no music. I have heard many stories, opinions, and longings in regards to the future of this worshipping community. In efforts to include all voices and the Holy Spirit in this visioning process, I invite you to take part in the Advent prayer and visioning process. Advent is a time in our Church season where we turn our hearts and minds to the practice of watching and waiting for the coming of Christ into the world. It is a rich season to take a step back from familiar rhythms and patterns in efforts to usher in new life and expression in our lives and the world.

On Saturday December 7th, the service will be held in the assembly area due to a wedding in the Cathedral. All other Saturday services will be held up in the chancel area of the cathedral by the piano and choir section. Please contact me with any question or comments.

Really looking forward to this time of listening to each other and the movements of the Spirit among us,

Help Wanted: Bulletin Board Creator for Floyd School

I need someone who can create a bulletin board type of display which will list needed items, pick-up times, current Floyd School related news, etc.  Rev. Kathy has a good supply of school-themed borders you can use. Should be fun to do, you can even include a small white board for 'quick' notes - that's all up to you.

I'm hoping we can get it up before too long. Please see Deacon Steve (deaconskiff@gmail.com or 204-4955) if your artistic abilities are looking for an opportunity to shine!

Adopt-A Floyd Family for Christmas Project

We won't be doing the Christmas Gift Bags this year, another church has asked to do them and we want to focus on the Family Christmas Project.   Sign-ups to shop for gifts for children and families will be held after Sunday services on December 8, culminating with a festive "Gift Wrapping Pizza Night" for all Santa's helpers on Wednesday, December 18 at 6 PM in the Great Hall.

The Vocal Art Ensemble presents:

Voices of Innocence: wonder * hope  * joy

Friday, November 22, 2013, 7:30 pm at Trinity Cathedral

The Trinity Cathedral Music Series presents the Vocal Art Ensemble as it leaps into a choral playground of expressive music, stirring up the pure and precious emotions of childhood. Vivacious ethnic pieces from Serbia and Africa walk hand-in-hand with honored composers John Sheppard and Stephen Foster, as well as living legends Morten Lauridsen and Arvo Pärt. Diverse instruments, vocal textures, and visual play are all presented with VAE's signature polish and meticulous attention to detail. To embody the child's viewpoint, we offer the budding talents of our children, whose instrumental exuberance and unbridled voices celebrate generations of cherished musical experience. Relish the moment with VAE's Voices of Innocence. Suggested donation: $6-20.

2013 Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner

Sunday, November 24 at 5:00pm

At Trinity Cathedral

This Sunday a meal will be shared with the Salam Center, B'nai Israel, Capital Christian Center and Trinity Cathedral to celebrate faiths that stem from the Abrahamic Tradition.

Each person is asked to bring a nonperishable food item and a vegetarian dish that feeds at least six people. The event will be informal highlighted by the singing songs that celebrate our faith traditions.

We hope this event will be the beginning of more gatherings that bring people from different faith traditions together.
Next Week & Beyond

Advent Advent Ingathering

Advent is the time when we anticipate the gift of the Incarnation of Christ. It is also the time in our culture when we worry about what gifts to give people at Christmas. We spend hours planning, shopping, and wrapping, wearing ourselves out.

In the past, following the lead of Deacon Tina Campbell, we had four different in-gatherings for organizations in the community during Advent. Because participation was not very enthusiastic last year, we have decided to do something different this year.

RCFB Logo We had an ingathering for River City Food Bank before Thanksgiving, instead of during Advent. When we shop for our families, we can also shop for the food bank. Or, if we want to make things easy for ourselves, we can go to the River City Food Bank website www.rivercityfoodbank.org and donate food virtually! (By the way, they always welcome new volunteers!)

ERDWe'll make shopping easy this year by sharing information from Episcopal Relief and Development. We'll let you know how they serve the world, and how you can help. We'll have Christmas catalogs for you to shop from. (Don't know what to give Aunt Sadie? How about a flock of chickens? Don't know what to give your favorite clergy person? How about a sheep-after all, the clergy are shepherds of the flock!) No, we won't have to build sheep pens or chicken coops, but your gifts will be given through ERD to the needy throughout the world, and the people you honor will receive a card from you telling them what you have given in their names.

ECS LogoIf you're interested in giving locally, we'll introduce you to the work of Episcopal Community Services. ECS works with congregations to expand their ministries. Trinity Cathedral was a recipient of a grant from ECS this year to include non-parishioners in our Wednesday evening dinners for the homeless by paying for the food. This is one small example of the kind of work ECS does. We'll share with you the exciting work ECS does in our own community through building up the ministries of our Episcopal parishes.

Hopefully, in assisting you in simplifying your shopping while ministering to the needs of our community and the world, you will be able to have a quiet, contemplative and holy Advent to prepare for the coming of Jesus into the world.

The Great 'O' Antiphons of Advent

Sunday, December 1st

One of the great liturgical traditions here at Trinity Cathedral is the Advent Procession and Eucharist held on the first Sunday of Advent. This is a unique service that has at its center the Great 'O'Antiphons of Advent. These ancient texts reflect some of the names given the Messiah in the Old Testament writings such as O Adonai, O Wisdom, O Root of Jesse, and O Emmanuel. These in turn are the basis for the great Advent hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," which is sung in the course of the service.

The service is in a "Lessons and Carols" format, with each of the antiphons highlighted by readings from scripture and appropriate prayers. The beautiful and mystical music for the antiphons has been composed by Peter Hallock, and are set for choir with organ and handbells. Each of the antiphons is visually represented by large banners that are carried in procession as the antiphons are sung, first in Latin to Gregorian chant, and then in English Hallock's luminous settings. The music will also include a vigorous "Advent Processional" by Donald Pearson, and a beautiful setting of Psalm 122 by Sidney Nicholson.

For the second year in a row, another service featuring the 'O' Antiphons will be held at 9:00 am, with a non-traditional setting of the 'O' Antiphons composed by Kathy Powell, sung by the Celebration Choir. The format will similar to the 11:15 service with Advent banners, lessons, and prayers. Also included will be music by Daniel Burton and Andrae Crouch.

Join the Cathedral choirs for this powerful and unique way to start the season of Advent!

Journey Down the Camino de Santiago

Fundraiser
Charis Hill

Arthritis Foundation Fundraiser

My name is Charis Hill.  I became a member at Trinity Cathedral on Mother's Day 2013. I am 26 and I have Ankylosing Spondylitis. It's a chronic, autoimmune, progressive, degenerative, painful disease - a very severe form of arthritis that ruthlessly attacks the body with aggressive inflammation that can cause spinal fusion, fatigue, severe joint pain, stiffness, progressive loss of flexibility, eye issues, lung issues, disability, and much, much more.

My journey began in February of this year with two separate visits (in two weeks) to a local Urgent Care Clinic. The first visit I suspected pneumonia, the second I suspected a heart attack. After tests and consultations I was told, "none of these tests shows anything wrong with you, perhaps you're suffering from depression and anxiety, would you like some antidepressants?" I said no to the medication.

I decided to reach out to my father to ask about the medical history on his side of the family. I received this email from him: "I talked to my rheumatologist. He says it sounds like you could have A.S. That's not a happy thought, and I'm qualified to say so...Before I go any farther - you need to get to a rheumatologist - I need you to call me."

This May, 47 people donated $2,500 in my honor to the Arthritis Foundation's Walk. I am honored to announce I have been chosen to be the Adult Honoree of the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this December 14th, a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation. I would be honored for you to join my team or make a donation.  Trinity is my closest family, so I'm asking for this support from my heart. Read my story and donate or join my team at www.tinyurl.com/supportcharis.
