"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
 Greetings!

  Brian Baker
Last week was a very good week at Trinity Cathedral.  On Thursday we hosted the opening Eucharist for our annual Diocesan Convention.  The church was packed with representatives from all over Northern California.  We also hosted one of the best preachers in the church, Bishop Curry.  I believe the sermon was recorded and I will post the link as soon as it is available.  We also kicked off our stewardship campaign with our pledge ingathering.  In the first week of our campaign, we have received  225 pledges totaling $686,254 pledged.  This compares to last year when, after the first week, we had 205 pledges for $624,197.  This is a great start. Thanks to all who have pledged.

I mentioned in my sermon that I believe it is time for a new era in the church.  It is time for us to get on the balls of our feet and move more boldly into the world with a message of Christ's love that is accepting, loving and does not participate in the community of fear that surrounds us.  People are hungry for a positive message of hope in the context of a caring, supportive community.  It is clear that our congregation is a place where people are transformed by the love of God in Christ Jesus and in one another.  It is time for us to make this love more readily available to people who don't walk into the church.

We have begun sharing the gospel outside the church through our new young-adult ministries that include a thriving Tuesday evening Bible Study that meets in a coffee shop as well as our yoga-church that has started meeting weekly.  This ministry of sharing Christ's love in the world is not limited to these programs of the church; it is something that we can all do by sharing our stories of transformation and listening to the stories of others.  It is remarkable the amount of isolation, fear and pain that many people carry with them.  We can all be agents of healing transforming love.

One of the responses I got from the sermon was, "teach us how to do this."  I have been talking with the staff and we are looking at putting a program together for the season of Easter that will help us become more confident in serving others and connecting with them on a deeper level.
This is an exciting time for the church.  We are waking up, coming alive and moving more courageously into the world, bearing God's love emboldened by our own experiences of transformation.  I look forward to your partnership in ministry as we walk into this new future.

Thank you for your support.

Blessings,

Brian

Donation of paper grocery bags (with handles)

The Backpack Program is going to get a new name (which we haven't figured out yet, but you can suggest one!) because we will no longer be using backpacks to send the food home for the weekend, we will be using paper grocery bags instead. So save them bags on a regular basis and drop them off, we'll get them to the school.

Adopt-A Floyd Family for Christmas Project

We won't be doing the Christmas Gift Bags this year, another church has asked to do them and we want to focus on the Family Christmas Project.   Sign-ups to shop for gifts for children and families will be held after Sunday services on December 8, culminating with a festive "Gift Wrapping Pizza Night" for all Santa's helpers on Wednesday, December 18 at 6 PM in the Great Hall.

Donation Location Central

We now have a new location to drop off your donations to Floyd School.

Two barrels and a bin will be living on the landing at the top of the stairs, just in front of the Conference Room. There will no longer be a barrel under the stairwell or in the nursery. The barrels are for food and clothing, and the bin is for collecting paper grocery bags.

A Full and Wonderful Week!

The young adult and fresh expressions ministry calendar is packed this week! New life and energy is springing up in engaging community rooted in the good news of Jesus beyond the walls of the cathedral. In the spirit of sharing the good news, here is a snap shot of past and future gatherings this week:

-          On Tuesday 10 people gathered around the biggest table at Centro Restaurant in Midtown. We enjoyed conversation, bible study, and prayer together. The Group decided that next week's gathering will be at the Coffee Garden!

-          Thursday was Holyasana at Zuda Yoga Studio. It is an experience that combines yoga, meditation, chant, reflection, and prayer.

-          Friday (tonight) at 7:30pm, we will gather for a labyrinth walk at the cathedral followed by dessert together.

-          Saturday at 6:30pm is the Interfaith Service for Transgender Day of Remembrance. Afterwards, some will travel to Davis together for a Halloween/Thanksgiving party.

Walk the Trinity Labyrinth
Friday, Novemer 15, 6:00-8:00pm

Labyrinth

On the third Friday of each month, Trinity's Great Hall is transformed into a place of enlightenment, healing, comfort and peace.   Twinkling candlelight and soft music create an atmosphere conducive to prayer and meditation. A pathway is mapped out on canvas in the same shape as the labyrinth in the cathedral at Chartres, a path walked by pilgrims and seekers since medieval times.   No experience or skill is required - each individual walks at his or her own pace and there are no tricks or surprises. You just prayerfully walk the path to the center and back out again, maybe keeping your focus on a simple prayer or maybe just listening for that still, quiet voice of God.

Perhaps you are feeling frazzled or lonely or lost. Perhaps you are looking for direction.   Try investing 20-30 minutes in this ancient prayer practice. Many find it transformative and nearly everyone leaves feeling refreshed and peaceful.

Hiking Trinity Hiking Guild

Saturday, November 16, gather at Trinity at 8:45am

Dear Trinity Hikers,

I'm about all healed up from my foot injury [or at least enough to give it a try], and a grueling travel schedule in October, and am anxious to get back on the trail again.  Don't want to push it for our first time out for a while, so lets do a walk on the American River Trail starting in Discovery Park.  We will car pool as usual from Trinity, gathering at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure.  We will be back at the cathedral by 11:00 at the latest, so no need to pack a lunch.  Just bring snacks and plenty of water.  Looking forward to catching up with you!

Important Note: I am starting a new e-mail list for our hiking group.  I have misplaced [or my computer has misplaced] some of your e-addresses.  Would you please send to me in order that I can make sure I have a current and complete list?

Thanks,  George Johnston

Soul Survivor

Finding A Faith That Can Survive The Church

Meets at 10:15am in Room A

We arrive at Trinity Cathedral from many directions and from a variety of starting points. Sometimes people come seeking refuge and healing from wounds received in other churches. Millions of people in the US offer this exact reason to explain why they no longer go to church or have sought a congregation of a different tradition.

How does one nurture a Christian faith vigorous enough to thrive in spite of wounds received at the hands of a church?

That will be the central question driving a discussion course that will be offered for seven Sundays starting November 3. We will consult the wisdom of various wise leaders, including some who were not Christians. The resource book will be Soul Survivor by Philip Yancey. Class facilitators will be Vaughn Wolff and George Swank. Questions? Contact George Swank at gswank2@pacbell.net

Newcomers' Group

Meets at 10:15 in THE ASSEMBLY AREA

The group will discuss Living with Change.

Everyone is welcome to be with us, especially, Newcomers and visitors. If you have questions contact Randie Strike at email randie.trinity@gmail.com or 916-446-2513.

30/40s and Beyond

The Vocal Art Ensemble presents:

Voices of Innocence: wonder * hope  * joy

Friday, November 22, 2013, 7:30 pm at Trinity Cathedral

The Trinity Cathedral Music Series presents the Vocal Art Ensemble as it leaps into a choral playground of expressive music, stirring up the pure and precious emotions of childhood. Vivacious ethnic pieces from Serbia and Africa walk hand-in-hand with honored composers John Sheppard and Stephen Foster, as well as living legends Morten Lauridsen and Arvo Pärt. Diverse instruments, vocal textures, and visual play are all presented with VAE's signature polish and meticulous attention to detail. To embody the child's viewpoint, we offer the budding talents of our children, whose instrumental exuberance and unbridled voices celebrate generations of cherished musical experience. Relish the moment with VAE's Voices of Innocence. Suggested donation: $6-20.

Charis Hill

Arthritis Foundation Fundraiser

My name is Charis Hill.  I became a member at Trinity Cathedral on Mother's Day 2013. I am 26 and I have Ankylosing Spondylitis. It's a chronic, autoimmune, progressive, degenerative, painful disease - a very severe form of arthritis that ruthlessly attacks the body with aggressive inflammation that can cause spinal fusion, fatigue, severe joint pain, stiffness, progressive loss of flexibility, eye issues, lung issues, disability, and much, much more.

My journey began in February of this year with two separate visits (in two weeks) to a local Urgent Care Clinic. The first visit I suspected pneumonia, the second I suspected a heart attack. After tests and consultations I was told, "none of these tests shows anything wrong with you, perhaps you're suffering from depression and anxiety, would you like some antidepressants?" I said no to the medication.

I decided to reach out to my father to ask about the medical history on his side of the family. I received this email from him: "I talked to my rheumatologist. He says it sounds like you could have A.S. That's not a happy thought, and I'm qualified to say so...Before I go any farther - you need to get to a rheumatologist - I need you to call me."

This May, 47 people donated $2,500 in my honor to the Arthritis Foundation's Walk. I am honored to announce I have been chosen to be the Adult Honoree of the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this December 14th, a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation. I would be honored for you to join my team or make a donation.  Trinity is my closest family, so I'm asking for this support from my heart. Read my story and donate or join my team at www.tinyurl.com/supportcharis.
