"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker Greetings!

This afternoon we celebrated the life of Henry Teichert who died last week.  Henry was not only a significant businessman in Sacramento, he was a very active member of Trinity Cathedral.  He served on the vestry in the past and attended worship regularly until his health made attendance impossible.  He was a faithful member of a downtown prayer group for 40 years.

I am writing this the morning before the service which will be at 2:00pm.  I expect the service will be well attended by people from all over the region.  Henry's death, and his service today, brings to mind two things.
First is the important role we, as a church, play when people die.  Church is where many people turn when facing death.  Not only do we offer a beautiful service for remembering those who die and offer an important message of hope grounded in the Resurrection, but we also help people become more resilient as they face their own mortality.  Our ministry of holding beautiful, reverent and hopeful services when people die is one of the most important gifts we have to offer.

The second thing that comes to mind is the extent to which we have been blessed by the people whom we are honoring in these memorial services.  Our beautiful Cathedral, and our prayerful, faithful community, is here because of the faithfulness of those who have gone before.  In the past years I have buried people who are cornerstones of our church: Barbara and Ray Mackey, Eleanor Langpaap, Nina Sellers and many others.

It feels like a significant generation in the life of Trinity Cathedral is stepping aside.  I am both hugely grateful for their witness and in awe of the responsibility that has passed to us.  We have been given a remarkable legacy by these saints and it is now up to us to carry Christ's love into the future.

I am grateful for you partnership in ministry and am confident that through our labor, blessed by God's Spirit, Trinity Cathedral will continue to be a place where people are transformed by God's love.

Blessings,

Brian

Christmas Greens:

A Youth Group Fundraiser

For the next three Sundays, Oct. 27th, Nov, 3rd and Nov. 10th, our youth group will be taking orders for beautiful Christmas wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces. Grown in the Pacific Northwest, these items will be delivered to Trinity after Thanksgiving and can be picked up at church on Sunday or during the week, and are very reasonably priced. Greens may also be ordered to be delivered directly to family and friends across the U.S. - they make wonderful Christmas gifts! Look for us in the Great Hall after church on Sunday. If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Kathy Hopner at 930-8027.

Floyd School
Back Pack Program
Need Weekly Pick-up and Delivery to Floyd School

It's fall and all our great Trinity volunteers are hard at work doing all they do for Floyd School. In addition to our Secret Pal program, Trinity runs a super nice clothes closet as well as the Back Pack Program which sends 'kid prep friendly' food each Friday to students selected by their teachers. Thanks to our volunteers, the program runs smoothly, but there is one hole in the operation that we're asking for help on. As you know, donations are dropped off in one of two barrels (one in the nursery and one which used to be beneath the stairs by the office but which has been moved to the elevator lobby area). The parishioners of Trinity are such strong supporters of the school that the barrels are usually full and need to be emptied each week.

Clothes Closet

We need drivers who can pick up the contents of both barrels once a week and deliver to them to Floyd School. It doesn't matter which day, as long as it is consistent as much as possible. In the past we've had one person do this, but two could do it by rotating weeks. Round trip from the cathedral is 6.4 miles (I know, I've done it!) and takes about an hour.

If this is something you can do, please contact Deacon Steve at deaconskiff@gmail.com

Please don't tell him in person or by phone, he's prone to forget!

Soul Survivor

Finding A Faith That Can Survive The Church

Beginning Sunday, November 3rd at 10:15am

We arrive at Trinity Cathedral from many directions and from a variety of starting points. Sometimes people come seeking refuge and healing from wounds received in other churches. Millions of people in the US offer this exact reason to explain why they no longer go to church or have sought a congregation of a different tradition.

How does one nurture a Christian faith vigorous enough to thrive in spite of wounds received at the hands of a church?

That will be the central question driving a discussion course that will be offered for seven Sundays starting November 3. We will consult the wisdom of various wise leaders, including some who were not Christians. The resource book will be Soul Survivor by Philip Yancey. Class facilitators will be Vaughn Wolff and George Swank. Questions? Contact George Swank at gswank2@pacbell.net

All Saints Sunday Choral Mass

Join us in our celebration of All Saints Sunday (November 3) at the 11:15 am Eucharist, as the Cathedral Choir sings the "Missa Secunda" (second mass) by Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler. This tuneful short mass setting is sung in Latin, and is one of the most often sung of mass settings from the era. In it, he shows complete mastery of writing in the contrapuntal style, reflecting the skill of his teacher Andrea Gabrieli. He is often credited with bringing the Venetian contrapuntal style north of  the Alps, and was the Kappelmeister to Christian II, Elector of Saxony.

Also included will be all of your favorite All Saints Day hymns.
McAllister-Keller Guitar Duo in Concert

Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America

November 15th at 11:00 am

(Doors open at 10:00 am)

at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

2620 Capitol Avenue,

Sacramento 95816

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has announced a 90-minute live forum in collaboration with the Diocese of Mississippi. The forum will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi.

The forum will begin with a thought-provoking video and be moderated by well-known journalist and PBS commentator Ray Suarez. Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori will present the keynote address.

Two panel discussions will focus on main themes:

  • Racism in America today - why does it persist?
  • Racism in America's future - where is there hope for change?

This year marks significant landmark anniversaries in the struggle to end discrimination, provide equal rights and combat racism: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the pivotal March on Washington, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers, the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks.  In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was signed into law.

In the Community

Capital Region Connect:

Employment Connect and Homeless Connect

Friday, October 25

This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services.  Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.

Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.

Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.

Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.

Free Film Screening:  God Loves Uganda
Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm
Crocker Art Museum, 216 O Street, Sacramento

The Sacramento chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State will host a FREE screening of the film, God Loves Uganda. The program begins at 7:00 PM.  NOTE: Doors open at 6:00 PM for reserved seats; unclaimed seats will be released at 6:45 PM and filled on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Senator Darrell Steinberg, Senate President pro Tem, will address the audience and lead an interactive discussion about this powerful documentary that explores the American Evangelical exportation of intolerance, particularly against the LGBT. The film follows evangelical leaders in America and Uganda, as well as politicians and missionaries, as they attempt the radical task of eliminating "sexual six" and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.

Interviews and hidden camera footage give unprecedented access into the rising influence of the evangelical movement in Uganda; it illustrates the notorious Ugandan 'Kill the Gays' bill, largely American-influenced, and the dangerous repercussions of intolerance.

A trailer for the film is posted on our chapter website: www.au-sac.org

Reserve a seat(s) and find parking information here:

We hope you are able to join us.  Please contact Carol Velarde (Cavelarde@aol.com) if you have any questions or comments.

A Course in Miracles

A unique, self-study spiritual thought system that teaches

that the way to Love and Inner Peace is through Forgiveness.

The language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity--it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.

A small group will be meeting at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church (26th and K) to begin studying the text of A Course in Miracles every Tuesday afternoon from 4:45PM--5:45PM beginning November 12th. Contact Mark at  brothermark@att.net for more information.
