TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings! Last Saturday night we had one of the best parish dinners I have ever experienced. I still can't get over how delicious the food was. We are blessed with amazing cooks. The Great Hall was beautiful. The positive energy and joy in the room was palpable. I am very grateful for all of the hard work that went into planning, preparing, serving and cleaning that went into the evening. The dinner gave us an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable community we have at Trinity Cathedral. What I see at Trinity is nothing like the negative stories I hear about some churches in the media. Many people who don't go to church think Christians are judgmental and hypocritical. They hear stories of churches that may preach about caring for the poor, but don't actually practice what they preach. They hear stories of churches being anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti- . . . . One of the things I love about Trinity is we have changed the story. We work hard to be welcoming, inclusive, gracious and serve the needs of others with true compassion. The story of Trinity Cathedral is in sharp contrast to the stories many people hear about Christians. While we have a different story, we haven't yet succeeded at sharing that story. We aren't great at letting people know how open, loving and transformational the gospel we share can be. In my work outside the church I regularly encounter young adults who are spiritually hungry but who are leery of churches, either because of what they hear or what has actually happened to them in church. After I speak to groups about my understanding of the gospel, the gospel we share at Trinity, it isn't uncommon for someone to come up to me and say, "Thank you for giving Jesus back to me." I am struck my how hungry people are for the good news of Jesus and his teachings. Fortunately we have The Rev. Megan Anderson on staff to help us connect with young adults who are hungry for the gospel and yearning for authentic community. I feel like, for the first time since I arrived almost 8 years ago, we are able to be proactive in sharing the gospel outside the church. I have done some work in this area, but I haven't been able to dedicate the time it takes to create deep relationships and a sense of community with young adults. This is a time consuming ministry and I am eager to see what we can accomplish with Megan leading this effort. The dinner was also the kick-off for our stewardship campaign that includes our pledge ingathering on the weekend of November 10. In order to support our existing ministries, and to continue to support new efforts such as our new young adult and youth ministries, we need to increase our pledged income by about 10%. During the past years of economic instability, we have limited our expenses and our ministries, but it is time to become for intentional and focus on growing the congregation. If you have pledged in the past, I hope you can increase your pledge. If you haven't pledged in the past, I hope you will consider doing so for 2014. Blessings, Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Attention Writers and Everyone Else
Ever longed to write, to put prayers to words, but not sure how to do it? Now is your chance! Trinity Cathedral has a practice of inviting individuals to compose the Intercessory Prayers (Prayers of the People) each week. If you have any interest in joining the team that practices this activity, please contact me today. The goal is to form a group of 10 - 12 people. This would mean that each individual would be responsible for the prayers once every two months. Please pray, consider and then let me know! Susan Van Dyke (dvandyke876@sbcglobal.net) No previous experience needed.

To my Trinity family:

Thank you for your very thoughtful condolences over the loss of my dog, Piper. So many of you went out of your way to send a card, share a hug, or offer words of comfort; it was a great help during a difficult time. I am so grateful for the remarkable acts of love and kindness that are part of our shared life at Trinity Cathedral.
I would like to extend to you all a heartfelt invitation to attend a short service of remembrance for Piper, to be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 7:30pm in the Cathedral. A modest reception will follow. You are invited to bring the ashes or picture of your own animal companion that has passed away to be prayed for during the service.
Thank you again for your wonderful support, and past kindness and affection toward Piper.
Gratefully,
Wendy Mustain

November 15th at 11:00 am
(Doors open at 10:00 am)
at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
2620 Capitol Avenue,
Sacramento 95816
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has announced a 90-minute live forum in collaboration with the Diocese of Mississippi. The forum will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi.
The forum will begin with a thought-provoking video and be moderated by well-known journalist and PBS commentator Ray Suarez. Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori will present the keynote address.
Two panel discussions will focus on main themes:
- Racism in America today - why does it persist?
- Racism in America's future - where is there hope for change?
This year marks significant landmark anniversaries in the struggle to end discrimination, provide equal rights and combat racism: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the pivotal March on Washington, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers, the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was signed into law.

Capital Region Connect:
Employment Connect and Homeless Connect
Friday, October 25
This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services. Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.
Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.
Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.
Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.

Free Film Screening: God Loves Uganda Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm Crocker Art Museum, 216 O Street, Sacramento
The Sacramento chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State will host a FREE screening of the film, God Loves Uganda. The program begins at 7:00 PM. NOTE: Doors open at 6:00 PM for reserved seats; unclaimed seats will be released at 6:45 PM and filled on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Senator Darrell Steinberg, Senate President pro Tem, will address the audience and lead an interactive discussion about this powerful documentary that explores the American Evangelical exportation of intolerance, particularly against the LGBT. The film follows evangelical leaders in America and Uganda, as well as politicians and missionaries, as they attempt the radical task of eliminating "sexual six" and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.
Interviews and hidden camera footage give unprecedented access into the rising influence of the evangelical movement in Uganda; it illustrates the notorious Ugandan 'Kill the Gays' bill, largely American-influenced, and the dangerous repercussions of intolerance.
A trailer for the film is posted on our chapter website: www.au-sac.org
Reserve a seat(s) and find parking information here: ausac-godlovesuganda.eventbrite.com
We hope you are able to join us. Please contact Carol Velarde (Cavelarde@aol.com) if you have any questions or comments.

A Course in Miracles
A unique, self-study spiritual thought system that teaches
that the way to Love and Inner Peace is through Forgiveness.
The language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity--it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.
A small group will be meeting at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church (26th and K) to begin studying the text of A Course in Miracles every Tuesday afternoon from 4:45PM--5:45PM beginning November 12th. Contact Mark at brothermark@att.net for more information.
