TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings! The most important activity we do as a congregation is Sunday Worship. I am not saying that feeding the hungry or providing pastoral care to people who are struggling are not essential to our lives as Christian. What I am saying is that Sunday worship provides the community formation, inspiration and energy out of which all our other ministries grow. For most of us, our primary Christian education and formation comes through the readings and sermons. The Eucharist provides us with sacramental nourishment. The prayers connect us to the needs of the world. Singing together connects us as a community and enhances our prayer. One of the ways of deepening your experience in worship is to be more involved in the worship services. At Trinity, there are many different opportunities that include reading lessons, serving the chalice, arranging flowers, tending the altar, composing prayers, baking communion bread, and serving as an usher. If you are interested in volunteering in any of these ways, come to church this Sunday and visit the Worship Ministry Fair. There will be information available and people who can answer the questions you may have about these ministries. Blessings, Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Attention Writers and Everyone Else
Ever longed to write, to put prayers to words, but not sure how to do it? Now is your chance! Trinity Cathedral has a practice of inviting individuals to compose the Intercessory Prayers (Prayers of the People) each week. If you have any interest in joining the team that practices this activity, please contact me today. The goal is to form a group of 10 - 12 people. This would mean that each individual would be responsible for the prayers once every two months. Please pray, consider and then let me know! Susan Van Dyke (dvandyke876@sbcglobal.net) No previous experience needed.

Trinity 27th Street Community Garden: Let's get growing!
Your Trinity Community Garden Team is working hard to establish a temporary garden on the vacant lots on 27th Street. The vision for the garden is to provide a space for ministry teams and their affiliated members to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in plots they plant and maintain until Trinity is able to construct a new building on the land. Thanks to a very generous donation by Senior Gleaners, we have a large number of used, wooden agricultural bins available to serve as raised bed planters in the garden plots. To get our garden off to the right start, the Garden Team needs the infrastructure components and you can help make the garden a reality with your small cash donation. A little "seed money", if you will.
We are also working with the City of Sacramento Parks & Recreation Department's Community Garden Director who has offered us a team of Americore workers on October 26 to provide some of the labor needed to remove weeds, and trench and install the major irrigation lines. But we need to purchase materials such as PVC irrigation pipe and fittings, landscape fabric, hoses, decomposed granite for accessible pathways, lots and lots of garden soil and a rental truck, fork lift and pallet jack to transport the donated wooden agriculture bins to the garden site.
Ready to get growing? You can put cash or a check in an envelope or memo line marked "GARDEN" in the collection plate - or - see any of the following Trinity members to donate or learn more about how to become a gardener: Paul Brosio, Dana Chamness, Donna Clark, Amy Dierlam, Charis Hill, Georgianna Pfost, Kevin Sanders, or Anita Williams. Thanks in advance from your Trinity Community Garden Team.

Before - The Nursery Renovation

We are about to begin Phase 1 of our nursery renovations in honor of Nancy Tennyson's ministry here at Trinity! To enjoy the full "wow" factor of this wonderful work, we are inviting everyone to stop by over the next week or two, and take a last "before" look - after all you can't have a great reveal without the before pictures! We are so grateful for the many gifts that are making this possible.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral
6:00pm - Candlelight Compline
6:15pm - TNAC Dinner ($7:00)
7:00pm - TNAC Classes
The Bible Challenge: Facilitators - Randy Knutson and Rhonda Canby, in the Conference Room.
It's never too late to start reading the Bible-a little bit every day, with Sundays off - and then to discuss the readings with a group of cheery, open-minded folks on Thursday evenings. Pick up a list of the Bible Readings in the Trinity Bookshop and bring the list and a Bible of your choice to learn the benefits of regular Bible reading and sharing.
The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox: Facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, in the Trinity Bookshop
Vaughn will be continuing the New Thought class. For those who are not familiar with Fox's writings you may begin with his essay on the Lord's Prayer in this book. Last year's class was inspiring and motivating. Everyone participated in the discussions and experienced incredible insights.
THE BIBLE: An Eight Hour DVD Series produced by the History Channel is facilitated by the Rev. Anne McKeever in the Assembly Area.
Haven't seen a Bible movie since The Ten Commandments or Veggie Tales? Lots has changed in the way Holy Scripture can come alive in film.
Rev. Anne McKeever will share the complete, ten-hour series through December 5th in the Assembly Area.
Come join us as we read a little scripture, view an episode and then discuss what we've seen. This will be the easiest way you've ever learned anything about the Bible. No homework! No stress! Just pure entertainment, critical viewing and lively discussion.

Capital Region Connect:
Employment Connect and Homeless Connect
Friday, October 25
This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services. Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.
Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.
Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.
Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.

Free Film Screening: God Loves Uganda Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm Crocker Art Museum, 216 O Street, Sacramento
The Sacramento chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State will host a FREE screening of the film, God Loves Uganda. The program begins at 7:00 PM. NOTE: Doors open at 6:00 PM for reserved seats; unclaimed seats will be released at 6:45 PM and filled on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Senator Darrell Steinberg, Senate President pro Tem, will address the audience and lead an interactive discussion about this powerful documentary that explores the American Evangelical exportation of intolerance, particularly against the LGBT. The film follows evangelical leaders in America and Uganda, as well as politicians and missionaries, as they attempt the radical task of eliminating "sexual six" and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.
Interviews and hidden camera footage give unprecedented access into the rising influence of the evangelical movement in Uganda; it illustrates the notorious Ugandan 'Kill the Gays' bill, largely American-influenced, and the dangerous repercussions of intolerance.
A trailer for the film is posted on our chapter website: www.au-sac.org
Reserve a seat(s) and find parking information here: ausac-godlovesuganda.eventbrite.com
We hope you are able to join us. Please contact Carol Velarde (Cavelarde@aol.com) if you have any questions or comments.

A Course in Miracles
A unique, self-study spiritual thought system that teaches
that the way to Love and Inner Peace is through Forgiveness.
The language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity--it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.
A small group will be meeting at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church (26th and K) to begin studying the text of A Course in Miracles every Tuesday afternoon from 4:45PM--5:45PM beginning November 12th. Contact Mark at brothermark@att.net for more information.

Groundbreaking Episcopal Church forum:
Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America
Live webcast on November 15
Day of workshops, discussions November 16
[September 11, 2013] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has announced the distinguished expert panelists for the November 15 live forum Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America.
The Episcopal Church will host and produce the 90 minute live forum in collaboration with the Diocese of Mississippi. The forum will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson, MS beginning at 1 pm Central (2 pm Eastern, noon Mountain, 11 am Pacific, 10 am Alaska, 9 am Hawaii).
"The Diocese of Mississippi is honored to be the site of this groundbreaking discussion," commented Bishop Duncan Gray of the Diocese of Mississippi. "Many important events in the history of the civil rights movement in our country occurred in Mississippi, and we have been using the anniversaries of these events as a time of truth telling and a renewal of our commitment to racial reconciliation and justice. This event will allow us to broaden and deepen these conversations and will be of great benefit to this church and the larger society."
This year marks significant landmark anniversaries in the struggle to end discrimination, provide equal rights and combat racism: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the pivotal March on Washington, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers, the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was signed into law.
State of Racism Forum
The forum will be moderated by well-known journalist and PBS commentator Ray Suarez. Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori will present the keynote address.
The forum will begin with a thought-provoking video.
Two panel discussions will focus on main themes: Racism in America today - why does it persist? and Racism in America's future - where is there hope for change?
Follow this link to read more and to register.
