Brian Baker Greetings!

Last weekend was a special weekend at Trinity.  We had our first annual recovery Sunday organized by The Rev. Anne McKeever.  It was a great opportunity to witness some of the ways people's lives have been saved as they overcame addictions through the grace of God and the hard work of sponsors, churches and programs such as AA or NA.

You may not realize that one of the significant ministries you support in your giving at Trinity is our hosting of 12-step groups.  We have multiple groups meeting in our facility six days a week.  One of my favorite is the noon NA meeting where everybody is greeted with a hug, "We love them until they can love themselves."  Lives are saved here.

I am grateful for the courage of our preachers, Kelly Boutwell, Jay Leach and Ric Burwell who were willing to tell their own stories. You can click on their names to watch their remarks.

I missed the services because Andrea, Mark and I were at my 30th West Point reunion - Andrea's is next year.  I had the honor of officiating and speaking at the class memorial service, where we remember our fallen classmates.  The service is the first official event at the reunion and it is designed to help set the tone for the weekend.  It was my first time getting to speak to the class and was a remarkable blessing that I don't think I will ever forget.  I've posted the video of my remarks if you are interested in hearing what I said--https://vimeo.com/74691724

Blessings,

Brian

Calling All Bread Bakers

We bake homemade bread for Communion/Eucharist at Trinity Cathedral. Currently, we are looking for more Bread Bakers. If you would like to join this ministry sign up at the Welcome Center any Sunday Morning or call the church office at 916-446-2513.

There are special instructions regarding the size and shape of the bread and there are several recipes. We will make sure you have the instructions and the recipes. Depending on the number of bakers we sometimes only bake bread every 3 months or so. Thank you.

RMEC logo RECOVERY WEEKEND

at Trinity Cathedral

Rev. Anne Gives Thanks

I hope never to recover from the joy I experienced at our first Recovery Weekend at Trinity last week. Our readers and preachers were excellent. Thank you all: Jay Leach, Ric Burwell, Kelly Boutwell, Denise Hedrick, Ruth Fitch, Franklin Munroe, Lynette Munroe, and Ron McCormack. Thanks, too, to Susan Wahlstrom, RN, director of our Diocesan Partners in Health Ministries, for her presence and financial support so we could offer so many brochures from 12-Step programs and the Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church.

Follow this link to read the The Twelve Step Intercessions.

We hope to make our Recovery Weekend an annual event, so we seek your feedback. Which service did you attend last weekend? What went well? What could we do differently? Did you drink from the grape juice chalice? Would you like a grape juice chalice offered at every Sunday service? Would you like to become involved in Trinity's on-going Recovery Ministry? Please send your comments to amckeever@wavecable.com.or leave a message at 530-908-3616.

The Bible Challenge: Facilitators - Randy Knutson and Rhonda Canby, in the Conference Room.

It's never too late to start reading the Bible-a little bit every day, with Sundays off - and then to discuss the readings with a group of cheery, open-minded folks on Thursday evenings. Pick up a list of the Bible Readings in the Trinity Bookshop and bring the list and a Bible of your choice to learn the benefits of regular Bible reading and sharing.

Sermon on the Mount book coverThe Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox: Facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, in the Trinity Bookshop

Vaughn will be continuing the New Thought class.  For those who are not familiar with Fox's writings you may begin with his essay on the Lord's Prayer in this book.  Last year's class was inspiring and motivating.  Everyone participated in the discussions and experienced incredible insights.

The Bible DVD SeriesTHE BIBLE: An Eight Hour DVD Series produced by the History Channel is facilitated by the Rev. Anne McKeever in the Assembly Area.

IS NOT MEETING TONIGHT!

Haven't seen a Bible movie since The Ten Commandments or Veggie Tales? Lots has changed in the way Holy Scripture can come alive in film.

Beginning September 12th from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Assembly Area, Rev. Anne McKeever will share the complete, ten-hour series through December 5th in the Assembly Area. We won't meet September 19th or October 6th.

Come join us as we read a little scripture, view an episode and then discuss what we've seen. This will be the easiest way you've ever learned anything about the Bible. No homework! No stress! Just pure entertainment, critical viewing and lively discussion.

Good with remote control devices? Rev. Anne would love to have an A/V volunteer to control the remotes Thursday evenings. Please contact her at amckeever@wavecable.com.

This class is a good opportunity to get some of your basic questions about the Old Testament answered. null Jesus and the Gays

Tuesday, September 24, 7:00pm in the Cathedral

Dean Baker will talk about how the Bible is being misused to oppress people who are gay and lesbian. Learn how faithfulness to Jesus moves us to be more welcoming and open to all -- despite race, religion. creed, or sexual orientation.
Choral Evensong in September Tour of England

The Cathedral Choir will sing our first Choral Evensong service for the season on Thursday, September 26th at 6:00 pm. This short music-filled evening service consists of psalms, canticles, scripture readings, and prayers. Using the majestic language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, it is a time to let go of the busy-ness of the day, and meet God in a meditative way. In the liturgical calendar, we will commemorate Lancelot Andrewes, a seventeenth century English Bishop, and the choir will sing music by Thomas Attwood Walmisely, John Goss, and John Sanders.

In the Community

null Sacramento Stand Down

Mather Field in Rancho Cordova

September 20, 21, & 22

The original Stand Down for the homeless veterans was modeled after the Stand Down concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations.

At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, send mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health, and overall sense of well-being.

Stand Down is an intervention that was conceived from the ground up specifically for veterans.  It is designed to transform the despair and immobility of homeless into the momentum necessary to get into recovery, to resolve legal issues, to seek employment, to access health and benefits, to reconnect with the community and to get off the streets...A very tall order for a three-day event. Follow this link to read more...

Capital Region Connect:

Employment Connect and Homeless Connect

Friday, October 25

This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services.  Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.

Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.

Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.

Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.
