"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

| Greetings!
It's GOOD to be home! This has been a most remarkable summer. As most of you know, I spent two months of my sabbatical this year walking The Camino de Santiago or The Way of St. James across northern Spain. It took me forty-eight days to complete the pilgrimage. I averaged about twelve miles a day and stayed in a system of albergues or hostels along the way. I ate, prayed, traveled and shared meals with people from all over the world. I met people on the Camino walking with a variety of health conditions as well as the young and fit. I even shared two nights with people who were making this five hundred mile trek on crutches! In the end, given the same gift of time, I would turn around and do it again. It is not a trip where I would ever want to be in a rush.
 | | Santiago de Compostela Cathedral |
One of the things I came away with was an even deeper love for the Church, yes even the institutional Church. I know throughout history the Church has hurt many people, even persecuted to the point of death those who crossed her path. Nevertheless, I have a renewed gratitude for the Church as a "place" throughout the ages where people can go and pray. Simply put, if I walk into a Church or I walk into Safeway...they are just not the same experience. God is so explicit, so noticeable in sacred spaces. I met people along the Camino who were trying on spirituality for the first time because Churches were there and open. Her art was ready to tell the Good News that love overwhelms evil. I went to Eucharistic services in both French and Spanish and understood, from the pattern of worship, what was happening. On the night of the horrific train crash in Santiago, I was asked by the pilgrims at the albergue to host a memorial service for those who had died and to pray for the living who were injured or were in grief. We held up before God the life of the train operator, praying that God would bring into his life and the life of his family, people of hope. I was oddly part of that historic Church, available to facilitate a community to pray for a story that was overwhelming the people of Spain. There is more to share and little space. I will work with Rev. Anne McKeever to find a time when those of us from the Cathedral who have walked the Camino can share our experiences. I want to end by sharing my gratitude for Dean Baker and the Vestry for allowing me to use my sabbatical time as a time to re-fresh my life. I am incredibly grateful to Trinity Cathedral, St. Paul's and St. Michael's School for their prayers and support in making this trip possible. I am very thankful for Rev. Anne and the clergy and staff for filling in the gaps caused by my absence. And I am perhaps most grateful to Pat, my wonderful partner, in letting this extraordinary experience happen, freeing me to have the pilgrimage of a lifetime. Buen Camino! Lynell+ The Rev. Lynell Walker Canon Pastor Special Note: Please join us this Saturday and Sunday as Trinity Cathedral celebrates Recovery Weekend!

Volunteers Needed for Sunday School!
Trinity has amazing children who need a little of your time and attention. Our Sunday School program is dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming place where our children can grow in their faith. To make this possible, we need two adults - either a teacher and an aide, or co-teachers - in each classroom. Can you give an hour once or twice a month from 10:15 - 11:15? You will be amazed at how working with our children not only feeds their spirit; it will feed yours, too! Please prayerfully consider this opportunity. If you would like to volunteer, or have any questions, please call Rev. Kathy Hopner at 930-8027.
Thank you!

We bake homemade bread for Communion/Eucharist at Trinity Cathedral. Currently, we are looking for more Bread Bakers. If you would like to join this ministry sign up at the Welcome Center any Sunday Morning or call the church office at 916-446-2513.
There are special instructions regarding the size and shape of the bread and there are several recipes. We will make sure you have the instructions and the recipes. Depending on the number of bakers we sometimes only bake bread every 3 months or so. Thank you.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral
New Series of Classes Begin September 12.

6:15pm - TNAC Dinner ($7:00)
7:00pm - TNAC Classes
The Bible Challenge: Facilitators - Randy Knutson and Rhonda Canby, in the Conference Room.
It's never too late to start reading the Bible-a little bit every day, with Sundays off - and then to discuss the readings with a group of cheery, open-minded folks on Thursday evenings. Pick up a list of the Bible Readings in the Trinity Bookshop and bring the list and a Bible of your choice to learn the benefits of regular Bible reading and sharing.
The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox: Facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, in the Trinity Bookshop
Vaughn will be continuing the New Thought class. For those who are not familiar with Fox's writings you may begin with his essay on the Lord's Prayer in this book. Last year's class was inspiring and motivating. Everyone participated in the discussions and experienced incredible insights.
THE BIBLE: An Eight Hour DVD Series produced by the History Channel is facilitated by the Rev. Anne McKeever in the Assembly Area.
Haven't seen a Bible movie since The Ten Commandments or Veggie Tales? Lots has changed in the way Holy Scripture can come alive in film.
Beginning September 12th from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Assembly Area, Rev. Anne McKeever will share the complete, ten-hour series through December 5th in the Assembly Area. We won't meet September 19th or October 6th.
Come join us as we read a little scripture, view an episode and then discuss what we've seen. This will be the easiest way you've ever learned anything about the Bible. No homework! No stress! Just pure entertainment, critical viewing and lively discussion.
Good with remote control devices? Rev. Anne would love to have an A/V volunteer to control the remotes Thursday evenings. Please contact her at amckeever@wavecable.com.

Choral Evensong in September
The Cathedral Choir will sing our first Choral Evensong service for the season on Thursday, September 26th at 6:00 pm. This short music-filled evening service consists of psalms, canticles, scripture readings, and prayers. Using the majestic language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, it is a time to let go of the busy-ness of the day, and meet God in a meditative way. In the liturgical calendar, we will commemorate Lancelot Andrewes, a seventeenth century English Bishop, and the choir will sing music by Thomas Attwood Walmisely, John Goss, and John Sanders.

TREE Tip
Making a Difference: Trees, Human Rights and Recycling.
By Ann Rothschild
We have several mature cedar trees on our property which were showing brown spots among the branches, and Willie, the arborist from Tree Care Inc., told us to put a soaker hose around the tree and leave it on for 24 hours every two weeks during the dry season. It hurts me to leave water on during these drought times, but the tap is on only a tiny bit and the dripping hose makes a huge difference to the trees. To my surprise, the hose does not need to be far from the trunk-a few feet is fine.
Dean Baker's sermon about his trip to Kenya and the difference small numbers of people make to their communities reminds me of an excellent book by Aimee Malloy, called However Long The Night, which chronicles the work of Molly Melching and her organization, Tostan, in Senegal. This true story of a young woman introducing the idea of human rights to women in remote villages is fascinating and inspiring.
Recycling.
TREE hopes that all parishioners and volunteers working in the Trinity kitchen will follow the guidelines about recycling that are available at www.sacgreenteam.com, the Sacramento Waste Management site-helpful info regarding cleaning plastic food containers before recycling, acceptance of milk and juice cartons, instructions on what to do with fluorescent bulbs and batteries, and reminders to remove batteries before recycling plastic toys. A sheet of information is available at TREE's Second Harvest Table during coffee hour on Sundays.

Capital Region Connect:
Employment Connect and Homeless Connect
Friday, October 25
This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services. Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.
Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.
Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.
Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.
