TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings! Welcome to a new program year at Trinity Cathedral. As school starts for our children and teachers, lots of programs at the Cathedral begin as well. I encourage you to look through this enewsletter, and our printed Cathedral Cross that will be arriving in the mail, and consider what activities you may enjoy. We have a ministry fair on Sunday, September 8 that will focus on ministries that involve children and youth. We have new staff supporting these areas of ministry and I expect some changes as they bring their own ideas and expertise to these programs. We are also starting new Education for Ministry groups as well as new classes on Thursday nights and other days of the week. A new Stephen ministry training class will begin. Or perhaps you would like to join the choir. If you would like to get more involved but aren't sure where to start, please contact me or Randie Strike, our volunteer and newcomer coordinator. Also, if there is a program or activity you would like to be involved in that we don't offer, please let me know. Perhaps we can help you start something new at the Cathedral. Blessings, Brian --
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA
p.s. I will be participating in an interfaith dialogue with Tibetan Buddhist Lama Marut tonight at the Cathedral (assembly area) at 7:30 p.m. |

The Trinity Cathedral Choirs want you!
Trinity Cathedral's active music program involves over seventy volunteers and part-time paid staff. With an emphasis on high quality and diversity, Trinity's
music ministry speaks in many musical languages to worshipers who come to the Cathedral.
With four choirs and a handbell ensemble, everything from plainchant to world and gospel music makes up the dynamic worship music at Trinity Cathedral. Truly there is "something for everybody" here!
Music is a vital part of our life at Trinity, and helps us to fulfill our vision "to make disciples who love and serve Christ and His world."
Would you like to be a part of this dynamic ministry at Trinity Cathedral??

A note about the...
Saturday 5:10pm service on August 31
Trinity will again host a special liturgy at the Saturday 5:10pm service with leaders and guests from St. John's Lutheran Church. This will be a wonderful time to experience Lutheran forms of prayer, preaching, and worship. We hope that this will be one of many opportunities for the Trinity community to live into the gift of the full communion we have with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Questions or comments? Contact: megan@trinitycathedral.org

Thursday Night at the Cathedral
New Series of Classes Begin September 12.
The Bible Challenge: Facilitators - Randy Knutson and Rhonda Canby, in the Assembly Area
It's never too late to start reading the Bible-a little bit every day, with Sundays off - and then to discuss the readings with a group of cheery, open-minded folks on Thursday evenings. Pick up a list of the Bible Readings in the Trinity Bookshop and bring the list and a Bible of your choice to learn the benefits of regular Bible reading and sharing.
The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox: Facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, in the Trinity Bookshop
Vaughn will be continuing the New Thought class. For those who are not familiar with Fox's writings you may begin with his essay on the Lord's Prayer in this book. Last year's class was inspiring and motivating. Everyone participated in the discussions and experienced incredible insights.
THE BIBLE: An Eight Hour DVD Series produced by the History Channel is facilitated by the Rev. Anne McKeever in the Conference Room.
We will read together short passages of Holy Scripture and then view and discuss how the History Channel makes scripture come to life-from Creation to Revelation. Are the depictions enlightening and/or distorting? Visually dramatic and often times entertaining, what can these stories teach us about our lives today?

Introduction to the Old Testament
Sunday Mornings -September 15 - October 27

This class will be on Sunday mornings between the 9 & 11:15 services in Room A. Besides the Bible, Donald Griggs' The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners is the main resource for the class. It is available in the Cathedral Bookshop. Jerry Paré will lead the class. Please let Jerry (jpare111452@gmail.com; 916-930-8032) know by September 9 if you plan to participate. That way we can make sure we have enough books available for all participants. However, if you feel a last minute calling to attend, please join us, with or without the book!
This class is a good opportunity to get some of your basic questions about the Old Testament answered. It will also provide a broad overview of the Old Testament as we enter the 3rd Quarter of The Bible Challenge. No need to be participating in the Bible Challenge to benefit from this class, however.

Recovery Weekend is Coming to Trinity
September 14 and 15 at All Services
Recovery is an active, life-long journey. Recovery is not just avoiding alcohol, drugs or harmful behaviors. Recovery involves daily, conscious contact with God. Those in recovery choose to lead new lives grounded in honesty and self-improvement. They dedicate their lives to serving others seeking and maintaining sobriety.
Very few people can say "I have never been affected by alcohol or drug addiction-either my own or that of a person I love."
How do we know that we or the people we love, need help?
How is it possible to lead a full and happy life without using drugs or alcohol?
How has the transformative power of God's healing love enabled millions of people to experience resurrection, finding new life in recovery?
Come hear our preachers, all Trinity parishioners in recovery, share their perspectives on recovery and sobriety at all five services: 5:10 m on September 14, and 7:30, 9, 11:15 am and 12:45 pm on September 15.
You are encouraged to bring with you to Trinity September 14 or 15 a friend or relative who could benefit from hearing the Holy Spirit's message of hope and healing.
Resources from Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church and from Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous will be available between services.
For more information or to volunteer to be part of one of the services, please contact Rev. Anne McKeever at amckeever@wavecable.com or 530-908-3616.

Floyd School Ministries
Have a free Friday afternoon once a month? We can use a few reliable volunteers to put together backpacks of food for 15-20 families at Floyd School. The faithful workers in the clothes closet could also use help.
If you can't help, we can always use donations of children's clothes and food for the backpacks--tuna, peanut butter, top ramen, fruit cups, power bars. Drop off your donations in the barrel under the stairs.
If you would like to know more, contact Deacons Steve Skiffington (deaconskiff@gmail.com) or Virginia McNeely (virginiamcneely@msn.com) .

Secret Pals
We are looking for Secret Pals for the teachers and staff at Leataata Floyd School. Each teacher and staff person fills out an information form about their job, and some of their favorite things such as authors, cookies/snacks, items they may need for their classroom or the school, and their birthdate. During the school year you can send notes of encouragement to let them know someone is thinking of them; send them a little gift reflecting what they wrote on their information sheets for them or their class or the school; remember their birthday and holidays.
A sign-up sheet will be available at the Welcome Center or you can call me at 916-501-9148 or email me at maryhustler@msn.com and I will send you the information sheet of your person. If you have any questions please call or I will be in the Great Hall Sunday, September 1st and the 8th.
Thank You for your support of the teachers and staff Floyd School. ~~Mary Hustler

Capital Region Connect:
Employment Connect and Homeless Connect
Friday, October 25
This year marks the first annual Capital Region Connect, an event aimed to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness by connecting individuals with needed employment and supportive services. Capital Region Connect is comprised of two events: Employment Connect and Homeless Connect.
Employment Connect is a unique job-fair designed to link ready-to-hire participants with employers who are ready and willing to hire. This job fair is built upon collaboration, support, and the understanding that in order to end homelessness, the community must address systemic causes, one of which is unemployment.
Homeless Connect is modeled after Project Homeless Connect, originating in San Francisco in 2004. Homeless Connect is a distinctive event, as it provides a myriad of services to individuals experiencing homelessness in a "one-stop shop" fashion. Homeless Connect emphasizes hospitality and creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable accessing services on their path toward stability.
Capital Region Connect will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013. For more information about this event and how to get involved, please contact Anira Khlok, Information and Program Coordinator at akhlok@sacstepsforward.org.
