CALLED to See and Hear

Edwina Gateley

 at

Trinity Cathedral

Friday, August 23

7:00 pm Presentation in the Cathedral

8:30 pm Reception and Book-Signing in the Great Hall

"The love of Christ overwhelms us." 2 Corinthians 5:14

God has called Edwina Gateley to live the scripture she loves.

Known all over the world as a witty, articulate woman who motivates others to become their best selves, Edwina founded the Voluntary Missionary Movement in England, sending hundreds of ordinary people on spiritual journeys they never could've imagined.

In 1983 Edwina spent over a year on the streets of Chicago walking with the homeless and women involved in prostitution. Sharing "the love of Christ" that "overwhelms us," Edwina answered God's call to create Genesis House, a home of hospitality and nurturing for women involved in prostitution.

Now God calls Edwina to lead retreats, make presentations, read and sign her many books and offer keynote addresses that help to fund her own foundation to share "the love of Christ." Sophia's Circle "seeks an appropriate setting where women of all races, creeds and economic background can find spiritual refreshment and explore the feminine dimension of God."

Tickets for $20 will be available in the Trinity Bookshop during the day on Friday and in the Trinity Narthex Friday evening.

Saturday 5:10pm services on

August 24 and 31

Over the next two weeks, Trinity will be hosting a special liturgy at the Saturday 5:10pm service with leaders and guests from St. John's Lutheran Church. Saturday August 24th and 31st will be wonderful times to experience Lutheran forms of prayer, preaching, and worship. We hope that this will be one of many opportunities for the Trinity community to live into the gift of the full communion we have with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. RMEC logo Recovery Weekend is Coming to Trinity:

September 14 and 15 at All Services

Recovery is an active, life-long journey. Recovery is not just avoiding alcohol, drugs or harmful behaviors. Recovery involves daily, conscious contact with God. Those in recovery choose to lead new lives grounded in honesty and self-improvement.  They dedicate their lives to serving others seeking and maintaining sobriety.

Very few people can say "I have never been affected by alcohol or drug addiction-either my own or that of a person I love."

How do we know that we or the people we love, need help?

How is it possible to lead a full and happy life without using drugs or alcohol?

How has the transformative power of God's healing love enabled millions of people to experience resurrection, finding new life in recovery?

Come hear our preachers, all Trinity parishioners in recovery, share their perspectives on recovery and sobriety at all five services: 5:10 m on September 14, and 7:30, 9, 11:15 am and 12:45 pm on September 15.

You are encouraged to bring with you to Trinity September 14 or 15 a friend or relative who could benefit from hearing the Holy Spirit's message of hope and healing.

Resources from Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church and from Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous will be available between services.

For more information or to volunteer to be part of one of the services, please contact Rev. Anne McKeever at amckeever@wavecable.com or 530-908-3616.

Oh Those Pests and Weeds!

by Ann Rothschild

Bugs bugging you during that meal on the deck? Hang a fabric softener sheet near, but not touching, an outdoor light to keep mosquitoes and moths away. Apparently, the heated sheets emit a smell the bugs hate.   I also use citronella candles on the table.

Weed Treatments. Cover unplanted earth with newspapers and then mulch-keeps in moisture and blocks weeds.   Douse weeds with scalding water from boiling potatoes or pasta, or spray with eco-friendly spray of 1 gallon white distilled vinegar mixed with 1 ounce of liquid dish soap.

Thanks to the AARP Bulletin, July/August 2013 for these tips.

In the Community

T-ACT

On Tuesday, September 3, at 6 pm, please join us at the Sacramento City Council meeting at 915 I Street. The City Council will be voting on its housing ordinance.

The future of Sacramento rests on the opportunities it creates for its children. We know that mixed-income communities help ensure upward mobility for low-income children; shouldn't we strive to keep our neighborhoods as inclusive and diverse as possible? The landmark Sacramento Mixed-Income Housing Ordinance was created thirteen years ago as a way to ensure that as Sacramento grows, it provides safe, decent and affordable housing for its residents of all income levels. Now the Ordinance is up for review, and the Sacramento City Planning Department Staff has proposed to expand the Ordinance's reach city-wide--one good thing for Sacramento. However, the other changes being proposed will strip the Ordinance of mandates to actually build any affordable housing. With fee-out options for developers, affordable housing isn't built in new communities because it is not as profitable as other, more expensive market rate housing. We are opposed to this option.   Follow this link to read more...
