Greetings!
Praying is important. Reading scripture is important. Studying, journaling, meditating and other spiritual practices are important. I know I need them to be healthy and whole, just like I know I need physical exercise. Unfortunately knowing I need something doesn't always translate into action.
I find it helpful when I can work spiritual practices into daily activity. Getting in the habit of saying a prayer when I wake up or as I'm falling asleep has been a worthwhile practice for me. Another practice that has been significant for me, as a priest, is the practice of preaching.
Preaching forces me to wrestle deeply with a scriptural text. While you many not have the benefit of preaching as a spiritual practice, you can deepen your practice of listening to sermons. One simple way to do this is to read the texts for the coming Sunday. You can find them online at the Lectionary Page. Just click the link on the date. If I am preaching, which I am this coming Sunday, you can pretty much count on me preaching on the gospel reading. So why not click on the link for the 18th and read the gospel text. Ask yourself what you would say about Jesus saying, " Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three . . . ." What do you think I will say?
Reading the text before you come to church is a simple way to increase the impact of the worship service. If you like, you can supplement your reading with a commentary, like N.T. Wright's Luke for Everyone. But a commentary isn't necessary. Just reading and pondering the text before you come to church can have a big impact.
I hope to see you this Weekend.
Blessings,
Brian

Thursday Night at the Cathedral
Voices of Faith
6:00pm: Candlelight Compline in the Cathedral
6:15pm: Bible Challenge Discussion Group
7:00pm: Voices of Faith in the Assembly Area

TONIGHT - August 15: Jerry Paré presents Martin Buber (1878-1965)
A Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue centered on the distinction between the "I-Thou" relationship and the "I-It" relationship. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (translated into English as I and Thou). In 1930, Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt, but resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, receiving a professorship at Hebrew University.
Is it true that it's always about "us" vs. "them"? Is it possible to overcome this seemingly basic aspect of our existence? In I and Thou Martin Buber provides insights into how we might overcome this separation from one another and from the Divine.
August 22: Randy Knutson presents Marty Haugen
Marty Haugen is a liturgical composer, workshop presenter, performing and recording artist and author
 | | William Byrd |
 | | Thomas Tallis |
August 29: Canon David Link presents Thomas Tallis and William Byrd - Thomas Tallis and William Byrd were the two most prominent of Elizabethan composers.

Thursday Night Dinners
Return to the Great Hall
Beginning September 12 at 6:15pm
Vaughn Wolff has volunteered to coordinate Thursday Night at the Cathedral (TNAC) Dinners.
A donation of $7.00 per person will provide for some very good eats and fellowship before the evening classes begin at 7pm. Last year the program grew from 25 people to 60 on occasion. We hope this second year of reviving this past tradition will continue to draw more people as we add more classes. As a footnote, if anyone would like to volunteer to be the chef for a Thursday evening, please send Vaughn an email at vewolff@yahoo.com.

The Parking Garage
Sutter Health recently changed parking garage management companies. This has resulted in difficulties for some Trinity members trying to gain entry into the garage. Most of those problems have been resolved. If you have a problem with your garage access card, please contact Jerry Paré (jpare111452@gmail.com).
Our contract with Sutter Health gives us use of the facility for 99 years. The agreement provides for use of 500 spaces on Sundays and 150 spaces on evenings. Parishioners who come for Sunday services only are encouraged to get a "Sunday Use Only" garage access card. Those who are involved in evening activities (e.g. vestry, ministry team meetings, choir) are encouraged to get a "Weekly" use card. The "Weekly" card allows access to the garage on Sundays as well as evenings after 5:30. Both cards require a $25.00 refundable deposit (refundable when returned) and can be acquired at the Bookshop or Parish office.
The computer that operates the gate access system records when a card and car enter or exit the garage. If you enter the garage with your card and, when exiting, have the gate attendant let you out, the computer still has your card recorded as "in." You will not be able to use your card again to enter the garage until that card records an "out." Entrances and exits need to have a car and the card involved in the same process. This may be confusing. It is understandable in "computer logic." If you need clarification, contact Jerry Paré.
Jeff Beck is our current Sunday gate attendant. He can let you in and out of the garage. Just remember the "computer logic" described above. If you use your card to get in, use your card to get out. Jeff's Sunday hours are 8:30am - 2:30PM. I encourage you to say "hi" to Jeff on Sunday mornings. He is doing a great service for Trinity.
Again, if you have any questions regarding Trinity Cathedral parking garage use, please contact Jerry Paré.

Matthew 25: 35-40 "'For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.' "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you, or thirsty, and give you something to drink? 'And when did we see you a stranger, and invite you in, or naked, and clothe you? ' When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?' Why I Love Edwina Gateley--
Part Four
by the Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever
Another Trinity Cathedral Thursday eNews, another opportunity to share why I love Edwina Gateley, author, poet, missionary, activist, mystic, mother, friend to prostitutes, addicts, and other miserable people.
Edwina and her young adult son Niall will speak at Trinity Cathedral Friday, August 23rd at 7 p.m. with a reception and book signing following in the Great Hall. Tickets are for sale in the Trinity Bookshop for $20. Tickets will also be available at the door. A few comp tickets are available. Please contact Rev. Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com.
This week I'd like to recommend Edwina's 1993 book, A Warm Moist Salty God. In her forthright and anecdotal style, Edwina tells of Sophia-Wisdom, of Shipra and Puah, of the Peroxide Hooker, of the bishop who wanted to wash feet, of Julian of Norwich, of a worn-out Jesus and a playful, risen Christ. All exhort us to expand our faith, to run from our corners and join in the unfolding of Creation.
From The Church Times, London: "[Edwina] is an essential voice to Christian feminism. A modern Dorothy Day."
From National Catholic Reporter: "Edwina Gateley states clearly: The very nature of our patriarchal society produces prostitutes and pimps."
From The Prairie Messenger: "Her prayers are cries ranging from desolation to ecstasy. Some are prosaic, some poetic; all are intense."

Recovery Weekend is Coming to Trinity:
September 14 and 15 at All Services
Very few people can say "I have never been affected by alcohol or drug addiction-either my own or that of a person I love."
How do we know that we ourselves, or the people we love, need help?
How is it possible to lead a full and happy life without using drugs or alcohol?
How has the transformative power of God's healing love enabled millions of people to experience resurrection, finding new life in recovery?
Come hear our homilists, all Trinity parishioners in recovery, share their perspectives on recovery and sobriety at all five services: 5:10 pm on September 14, and 7:30, 9, 11:15 am and 12:45 pm on September 15.
You are encouraged to bring with you to Trinity September 14 or 15 a friend or relative who could benefit from hearing the Holy Spirit's message of hope and healing.
If you would like to participate in one of the services as a reader or homilist or if you would like to help between services at an information table with resources from Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church and various 12-Step organizations, please contact Rev. Anne McKeever at
amckeever@wavecable.com.

The Blessing of Canon Carey's Corner
in the Trinity Cathedral Bookshop
Sunday, August 11, 2013
 | | Canon Carey with Dana Chamness |
Loving God,
we thank you for the gift of Canon Grant Carey in our lives.
We thank you for enriching our lives with
his kindness, humor and compassion.
We thank you for the many decades Canon Carey
has served God at Trinity Cathedral,
presiding at countless services of Holy Communion,
Baptisms, Weddings, Burials, Kirkin of the Tartans
and St. Nicholas Nights.
We thank you for the treasure trove of writing
Canon Carey has given us:
priceless sermons, services for all occasions,
and two volumes of Stump the Canon.
We thank you for Canon Carey's willingness
to invite us into his Trinity office
to answer our many questions, to tell us stories
and to give us comfort and hope when we've needed it most.
We thank you for Canon Carey's
jokes, sayings and pithy words of wisdom.
 | | Canon Carey with Karen Hustler |
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit:
Bless this space we now dedicate
in the Trinity Bookshop
as Canon Carey's Corner
that it may be a place of honor for a true gentleman,
a place of rest, a place of conversation,
a place of laughter and shared memories.
May we enjoy this space by sharing Canon Carey's presence,
his books, his works of art and his famously comfortable chair.
May all who visit this place be blessed with the love
Canon Carey so freely shares with us all
as a true servant of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Bread of Life Offers Spiritual Recovery
by the Rev. Anne McKeever
Our friends at Bread of Life in Sacramento are offering many great opportunities for spiritual growth in the next few months. I've signed up to attend the September 30th event, Spiritual Recovery: Dance of Evolution and Revolution led by Don Bisson, after reading this description:
"Recovery from addiction and abuse is a dance of slow evolutionary growth and the negotiation of new radical bottoms for spiritual awakening. Recovery becomes an experience of grace as we are faithful to daily practices and are willing to process the shattering experiences that propel us into 'revolution' inside and out. Recovery is not linear but a spiral which ultimately touches us at the core of our being to liberate and celebrate the divine at the hear of the soul."
