Greetings!

Megan Anderson

Greetings,

It seems hard to believe that I am already finishing up my first month of ministry at Trinity. I am in awe of how much has happened in just five weeks. It has been such a gift getting to know many of you and the great wealth of ministry that this community is involved in. With worship, Vestry and Ministry Council, Stephen Ministry Meetings, Voices of Faith Programs, Community Dinners, and Newcomer's Gatherings, there always seems to be great opportunity for engagement in this community. Even with such a calendar, people often note what a slow time the summer season is around the Cathedral. With many away for vacation, programming tends to be on the lighter end. While I have definitely been keeping busy in my first month on the job, I look forward to the additional opportunities for relationship and ministry engagement that will come in the new fall season.

As I begin my second month ministry here, I am excited to welcome a new colleague. The Rev. Kathy Hopner begins her ministry as Director of Family Ministries at the Cathedral today. I am looking forward to partnering with her in organizing and leading the Youth Ministry program for the coming year. While we will begin brainstorming this month, connecting with youth and parents is essential for long term planning. Kathy and I are eager to host a gathering for parents and youth entering grades 6-12 to hear about past programs, current activities, and hopes for the future. We hope to meet for a potluck lunch meeting following the 11:15am service one Sunday in September. Look for the details and date of this event in the next issue of the Cathedral Cross Newsletter. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or comments about the Youth Ministry program.

I am hopeful that our work and visioning together will lead to a rich year of fellowship, faith, and fun in Youth Ministry.

Blessings,

Megan

Loren Weatherly Senior Warden's Report

by Loren Weatherly, Senior Warden

The summer has been filled with opportunities for Trinity Cathedral and its vestry. Are you keeping up? Vestry minutes are available in 2 locations. They are posted on the bulletin board in the hallway between the Great Hall and the Bookshop, and they are available on the cathedral website at Vestry Documents.

At the June 18 vestry meeting, architects presented revised architectural concepts for the Cathedral Campus Master Plan. Please see the minutes from that meeting at June Vestry Minutes.

The vestry and the dean met in retreat on June 22 for Trinity Cathedral's first Mutual Ministry Review (MMR). Britt Olson, Canon to the Ordinary, Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, facilitated the review. The MMR is a way for a parish to celebrate annually what has been done well and to understand what might be done better. We asked "What is God calling us to do here at Trinity Cathedral? How can we accomplish it?" We identified several opportunities, selected 4, formed teams, and began to develop goals and action plans. These are those teams, and a short overview of team goals. Teams report on their progress each month to the full vestry. Please contact team members if you want additional information.

Budget, Income, and Expenses: Develop, refine, and distribute policies procedures and guidelines so that the vestry, congregation, staff and ministries have a clear understanding of our finances, and know the details about how we support our mission and ministries. Members are Sue Clark, Mary Hustler, Chris Sanft, Chris Tzimenatos.

Episcopal Foundation Implementation Plan Committee: Develop implementation plan for Episcopal Foundation report. Create and manage Pledge Team. Members are Brian Baker, Kelly Boutwell, Randy Cheek, Burt Douglass, Kevin Sanders.

Increase Financial Sustainability: Establish a planned giving program, and promote an endowment program. Members are Pat Hill and Loren Weatherly.

Building Program:  Build out the new campus program within 20 years. Focus first on completing the 27th Street building in 5-7 years, the Capitol Street building in 10-15 years, and the new Cathedral in 15-20 years. Members are Kevin Donohue, Ruth Fitch, Sally Smith, Anita Williams.

The MMR is a vital tool to help us plan, manage, and evaluate our ministry. Ask any vestry member about the MMR process, and about the progress of these teams. Please pray for us all as we all listen to hear what God is calling us to do, and how best to accomplish it, here at Trinity Cathedral.

EfM
Education for Ministry Scholarship Fund...

...is GROWING!

Thanks to many generous donors, Trinity's EfM Scholarship grew to $1,000 in just one week! This means several Trinity parishioners will benefit from partial scholarships, making it possible for them to enroll in another year of this challenging class about the Bible, theology and ethics. Tuition is $350 a year. Please write a check in any amount payable to Trinity Cathedral with EfM Scholarship Fund in the memo line. Thank you so much.

Here's another testimonial full of good reasons to support the EfM Scholarship Fund, this week presented by Loren Weatherly:

The EfM program provides theological education to those of us who have come to that time in life when we are asking "What does life mean in relationship to God and my neighbor?"

Our EfM mentors helped the group's participants feel safe and secure. This freedom to express myself was a big deal for me. I had been raised in a conservative and dogma-focused denomination. That experience had left me frustrated and disillusioned as a young adult - fearful, and unwilling to express my own understanding of scripture and the holy.

At EfM, I became fearless about describing my personal encounters with the lessons and with the scripture and with God. At EfM, I could say pretty much whatever I was feeling or thinking, and my feelings and thoughts were valued. I was learning so much also from my classmates' experiences, from our mentors' encouragement, experience and support, and from our group discussions.

I graduated in June after four years of EfM. Please join me in supporting this enriching program for other Trinity parishioners seeking a closer relationship with God and our neighbors.

Why I Love Edwina Gateley--

Part Three

by the Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever

OK. I admit it. I'm a shamelessly exuberant fan of Edwina Gateley: poet, prophet, mystic, activist. So I'm downright giddy as the day of Edwina's appearance at Trinity Cathedral approaches on Friday, August 23rd, from 7-8:30 in the Cathedral, followed by a reception and book-signing in the Great Hall. Donation is $20 and tickets may be purchased at the Cathedral Bookshop or at the door. A few comp tickets are available. Contact me at amckeever@wavecable.com.

Christ in the Margins bookcover This week I want to share another one of Edwina's books that I love: Christ in the Margins. Inspired by the illustrations of award-winning artist, Robert Lentz, Edwina reveals the face of Christ that shines in the most unlikely places. This book features forty stunning Robert Lentz icons and biographies of Christ-figures who confound the status quo. Edwina shares stories of men and women, the poor and the broken, mystics and visionaries, martyrs, artists, children and fools. They've all lived in the margins, and each one wears the face of Christ in a unique way: Black Elk, Harry Milk, Saint Rose of Lima, Albert Einstein, Dame Julian of Norwich, Christ the Good Shepherd, J.S. Bach, Saints Perpetua and Felicity, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Please join me in welcoming Edwina Gateley and her son Niall to Trinity Cathedral August 23rd. It will be an evening you will never forget.

RMEC logoResources from the Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church will be available.

Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church is an independent, nationwide network of Episcopal laity and clergy, dioceses and parishes-all with a common commitment to address the effects of addiction in relation to the church's mission.

RMEC network serves as a voice of conscience to Episcopalians throughout the world, building awareness of pastoral and spiritual ministry to those addicted. The original concept for Recovery Ministries' mission dates from the landmark 1979 General Convention resolution on alcohol.

Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church is an organization with a mission to those who, through, alcoholism or addiction, have lost their health and freedom.

Our ministry seeks to:

  • Help the addicted and those who love them connect with spiritual resources and lasting recovery.
  • Witness to Christ's unfailing mercy by welcoming members of 12-Step programs into our faith community.
  • Raise the awareness of bishops, other clergy, and church leaders about alcoholism, drug addiction and the redemption and grace found in recovery.
  • Strengthen recovering Episcopalians in the work of their recovery, helping them to proclaim the Gospel to others and to carry their recovery into the Church.
