Greetings!
Brian Baker

I will be leaving on Monday for a gathering of Anglicans in Kenya.  The conference is sponsored by the Chicago Consultation and the Ujamaa Centre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.  Our goal is to strengthen mission and advocacy connections among Anglicans who are interested in the theology of human sexuality and justice. We believe that deeper connections with each other will make it easier for us to work together in mission and to communicate productively when challenging Communion-wide issues arise. The co-conveners of the consultation are Professor Gerald West of the Ujamaa Centre, and Professor Esther Mombo of St. Paul's University in Limuru, Kenya.

The consultation, which will involve about 55 people and last for three days, will be grounded in prayer and Bible study and will explore theological perspectives on human sexuality and justice. Participants will include theologians, bishops, church leaders, grassroots advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and other people willing to engage in intensive conversations
across cultural boundaries.

The participants in the consultation plan to share their experiences with the wider church through a published collection of essays and reflections and through the report of a listening team.

I will be taking Mark, my 16-year-old son with me and we will participate in a 3 day safari before the conference begins.  Please pray for us in our travels and I look forward to reporting on our experience when we return.

Blessings,

Brian

Why I Love Edwina Gateley

by the Rev. Anne McKeever

Soul Sisters book cover When I first became aware of Edwina Gateley in 2003 by reading her book, Soul Sisters: Women in Scripture Speak to Women Today, I fell in love with her poetry, her spirit, her ability to inhabit women in scripture I'd always wondered about but had never really known.

Inspired by the Louis Glanzman's portraits of twelve women of the New Testament, Edwina challenged herself truly to know these women by living within their spiritual skin.

"After a lifetime of knowing all about these women I felt, a last, that I had actually met them. Indeed I had. They were people I already knew: homemakers, sex workers, child runaways, crones, teachers, mothers, senior citizens . . . all of them knew Jesus. All of them were archetypes who reflected the journeys, struggles, joys and dreams of women today. I knew at once: I had to do this book."

-- Edwina Gateley.

Edwina is a remarkable story-teller, hilariously funny and brutally honest. She is not welcome to speak in the churches and halls of the Roman Catholic Church of her birth because of what she's said and done to challenge what she sees as hypocrisy and injustice.

I cry tears of joy, sorrow and deep relief every time I hear Edwina speak.

Please join me in welcoming Edwina Gateley to Trinity Cathedral on Friday, August 23rd at 7 p.m. She and her son Niall will speak until about 8:30 and then we'll gather in the Great Hall for a festive reception and book-signing. Our Cathedral Bookshop will be selling Edwina's books before and after the event.

Tickets are for sale for $20 in the Bookshop. Some comp tickets are available, thanks to generous benefactors. Please see Rev. Anne for details.

New Thought Class resumes...

on September 12

Sermon on the Mount book coverVaughn Wolff will be continuing the New Thought class studying Emmet Fox's book on The Sermon on the Mount. The first meeting is on September 12. The book is available in the Cathedral Bookshop, so please pick up a copy and begin reading. For those who are not familiar with his writings, you may begin with his essay on the Lord's Prayer in this book as well as Power Through Constructive Thinking. Last year's class was inspiring and motivating. Everyone participated in the discussions and experienced incredible insights.

Trinity Recovery Weekend

"I Once Was Lost and Now I'm Found"

Coming September 14 and 15

Why are many people in recovery so happy? They experience daily the transformative power of God's healing love. They see and feel resurrection. Their honesty allows them to overcome shame and blame of the past to become free and whole. September 14 and 15, at all services, Trinity Cathedral will host a Recovery Weekend with readings, intercessory prayers and homilies presented by Trinity parishioners actively working programs of recovery. If you would like to join our planning committee, please contact Rev. Anne McKeever at 530-908-3616 or amckeever@wavecable.com.
