"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings!

NOTICE: I will not be teaching a class on the Old Testament tonight. The only class this month was taught last Sunday and can be seen at the bottom of this page: https://vimeo.com/album/2295556
When I was in seminary in the late 80's, I was told about how, for the most part, sacraments were intended to be celebrated with the community of the faithful.
The clearest example of this was baptism. With the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, we moved away from the practice of private baptisms. It is expected that baptisms will take place at Sunday services. This practice has not only enriched the experience for the people being baptized, it has strengthened the church as we are reminded of our own baptisms and we commit ourselves to support the baptismal candidates.
I also remember being told that the sacrament of marriage should be viewed in the same light. What would it be like, we were asked to consider, if a congregation celebrated the sacrament of marriage during a Sunday service rather than at a private ceremony. I thought it was a lovely idea, and wondered if I would ever be in a congregation where people felt so connected to their church that they would want to celebrate their marriage in this way.
I recently received such a request from two members of the Cathedral. Rachel Pearman and Jennfier Ikemoto had their union blessed last year, but now they can be legally married. Not only did they want their legal marriage blessed, they asked if it would be possible for the service to take place on Sunday morning with their faith community gathered around. On August 4 we will be blessing the marriage of Rachel and Jennifer at the 11:15 service. We will be using the rite recently adopted by the Episcopal Church. This rite flows like a Sunday worship service, with readings, the sermon and prayers in their usual place. The liturgy deviates from the regular Sunday service in that the couple is presented by sponsors (like in baptism,) the couple exchanges their vows & rings and they are blessed by the priest. If you are interested, you can download the rite here.
Probably for everybody gathered, having a marriage blessed in the context of a regular Sunday service will be a new experience. I want to let as many people know what is happening so people aren't caught by surprise by the experience, and so that people who normally attend have the opportunity to come at 11:15 if they would like. Rachel and Jennifer have written a letter of invitation to the congregation and they will be providing cake for the coffee hour following the service.
Blessings,
Brian

My Fourth, Final and Best Mission Trip
by The Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever
Knowing this would be my final Sierra Service Project youth mission trip, I'd been praying it would be my best experience-and God richly blessed me in Stockton with two great Trinity youth, Rhiannon and Alena, a wonderful work team, co-leader, work site and young adult SSP staff. I thank their mothers, Curry and Bobbie, for raising such enthusiastic, hard-working young ladies.
 | | Curry, Alena, Rhiannon and Bobbie |
I'm passing the torch of Youth Ministry to Rev. Megan Anderson and Rev. Kathy Hopner, but I'm remaining at Trinity to serve as a priest, provider of pastor care and Director of Spiritual Formation.
 | | Ms. May Ola Thompson |
My work team was assigned to launch a project to be completed by two subsequent work teams: building a deck and wheelchair ramp for a homeowner, Ms. May Ola Thompson.
Blind from glaucoma and walking with difficulty with a cane, Ms. May Ola spends most of her days indoors, getting out just for church on Sunday at the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Stockton. When the ramp is completed, her family will have an easier time getting her out into the community where she's spent her life serving as a leader, fundraiser and role model.
 | | Rev. Anne's SSP work team with homeowner May Ola Thompson |
My work team labored in heat over 100 degrees measuring, marking and then digging post holes for the deck and ramp.
 | | Digging post holes. |
When we weren't working we were singing, playing, praying and touring Stockton.
See the next edition of The Trinity Cross for Alena and Rhiannon's stories about their work teams' adventures.
We give thanks to the Trinity community for supporting our annual Sierra Service Project mission trips by purchasing gingerbread houses and pizza. We thank the Trinity Men's Group for their support and Alyssa Brown for her on-going craft sales with all profits going to our mission trips.

TREE Tip
Pesticide Reminders
by Ann Rothschild.
Veggies are growing apace and TREE's Second Harvest table welcomes your excess produce--organic, we hope. If the bugs are bothering you, don't forget, many garden pests can be controlled by hand picking or by spraying with mild soap and water. Lure snails into sunken dishes of beer--a happy drowning.
If you must buy chemical pesticides, avoid stockpiling--buy only enough for one season.
Consider ready-to-use pesticides rather than the concentrate and mix variety--unless you have a farm!
Follow instructions carefully for use and storage and disposal.
Never pour leftover pesticides down the sink, toilet, sewer or storm drain. Those chemicals find their way into waterways and ground water.
Thanks to Debbie Arrington of the Sacramento Bee Home and Garden section (7-6-13) for this advice.
