"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings! Brian Baker

I remember when same-sex marriage became legal in California in 2008. We had just hosted Bishop Robinson.  We became know by many in Sacramento as a place of welcome for people who were gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. Our ability to welcome was muted, however, because we were not authorized to host same-sex weddings in the Cathedral and our clergy were not permitted to officiate at same-sex weddings.  Personally I found it very frustrating to advocate for same-sex marriage in the wider community, but not be able to practice it in my own church.  I am happy to report that things have changed significantly in the past five years.  Last summer our General Convention authorized a rite for blessing same sex unions.  I used the rite at a recent service and it is beautiful.

In anticipation of the Supreme Court's decision, I have been talking with Bishop Beisner about the possibility of hosting same-sex weddings at the Cathedral.  Yesterday he released a statement in which he stated we would be able to bless same-sex marriages and sign wedding licenses.  This is very good news for our gay and lesbian couples who would like to be married at the Cathedral.

I think a wedding ministry can be an important witness of welcome to LGBT people in Sacramento.  For too many years, churches have not only excluded, but have actively persecuted LGBT folks.  I think it is important that we be as open, as welcoming as our facility and clergy's schedules allow.  It's time for the church to become known as a place of radical welcome rather than harmful exclusion.

Blessings,

Brian

Noyes Fludde Noyes Fludde is coming!

But there's no need to don the life-jackets. Benjamin Britten's church opera will be performed by Trinity Cathedral's Choristers, with guest soloists, in the dry comfort of St Paul's Episcopal Church at 15th & J Streets.

Based on a fifteenth-century mystery play, it was adapted for Britten's opera in 1957, and has been performed around the world thousands of time. The music is highly original, and very challenging for the performers. The choristers have been working on it for nearly a year! It is especially appropriate to perform it this year, as 2013 is the centennial of Britten's birth.

There will be two performances of Noyes Fludde at St Paul's: Friday, June 28th at 7:00 pm, and a matinee on Saturday, June 29th at 2:00 pm. Please join us!!

Flea Control

by Ann Rothschild

Yes, that is a euphemism for killing fleas, and yes, I have been eagerly doing that for the last three weeks. When my husband Michael found bites up his legs and ankles, he was ready for the house "bombs" and the first spray company in the Yellow Pages. Begging for his patience, and hastily researching the web, I found master gardener and permaculture expert Paul Wheaton's article, "Die Fleas! Die! Die! Die! Freaky Cheap Flea Control," a humorous, exhaustive description of the flea life cycle, the hazards of most toxic sprays, and hints for ecological control of fleas (http://www.richsoil.com/flea-control.jsp). So with diatomaceous earth powder sprinkled on floors and carpets, followed by repeated vacuuming and washed bedding, we eventually killed the house fleas. Michael found an ecological pest control company for the garden-where the fleas originated. We have no animals. Ecotech Pest Management Inc. advertises "environmentally conscious pest solutions" and sprayed our whole outside area (and we are large on the corner) twice, with two weeks in between, with a mix of rosemary oil, peppermint oil, and thyme oil. This kills fleas and other insects, but does not poison gardens. Cost $195.00 for two visits.

Another company, Fleabusters, Inc. (1-800-765-3532) uses non-toxic nematodes, microscopic worms that eat fleas in all stages of their development, without harming gardens or other insects. Once fleas are gone, nematodes die off. Good solution if you notice fleas outside early on.
