"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Dean Baker has given me this opportunity to "write the lead" for this week's E-News. So I want to mention several things:

The first is personal. As many of you know, I had open heart surgery in January. Recovery (with complications) kept me out of the office until the beginning of June. During those five months I became very appreciative of the healing ministries at Trinity Cathedral. My name was on the prayer list. Prior to taking my leave, I was prayed over by our Sunday "Transept Ministers." Days before my surgery the Trinity staff prayed over me at one of the weekday Masses. (That's sort of a perq for being on staff here, but this ministry is available to all members of Trinity Cathedral.) Eucharistic visitors came to our house and shared the Blessed Sacrament with Mary and me. I had a Stephen Minister. Lay Chaplains visited Mary and I and prayed with us during my hospital stays. Members brought meals, and the flow of get well cards was amazing. We have awesome healing ministries at Trinity! If you feel called, please join one of the ways to minister to those among us who need healing. If you feel the need for such healing, be it physical, emotional or spiritual, do not hesitate to ask. Either way, call the office and we can help get you in touch with the proper ministry. I want to express my gratitude to you and all of those who prayed for me during my surgery and recovery.

The second item has to do with hospitality at Trinity Cathedral. We are a welcoming community. Being open to all who come through our doors is often rewarding and sometimes challenging. For example, we will be hosting many people from throughout the diocese for the ordinations of eight deacons on June 29. We are expecting over 600 guests that day! How will we accommodate this great crowd? We are hoping for a replay of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes story from the Gospels. But, in case that does not happen, the entire event has involved planning by the Worship and Music ministry team as well as the Hospitality Team. Our hospitality ministry team always has it arms open for help from any and all of you. Start with Sunday morning refreshments and move on from there.

The third item involves a series of classes that we will soon begin offering again on Sunday mornings at 10:15. This series is meant to answer basic questions about Christianity and the Church. Currently we have three in the series: "Introduction to the Old Testament"; "Introduction to the New Testament" and "Introduction to Worship and Prayer." The latter will begin on July 14 and run through August 18. If you are wondering why some people genuflect and others do not, or when to kneel or stand; or want to increase your understanding of what we do together on Sunday mornings, please join this class, beginning July 14.

With gratitude for all of your prayers, I sign off.

Sow Some Love in our Vacant Lots

Vacant Lots

Earlier this year, Trinity Cathedral purchased the vacant land facing 27th Street, behind the Cathedral, where the buildings for the Office of the Bishop and the River City Food Bank once stood.  Members of the Cathedral are now beginning the process  of exploring possible temporary uses, such as creating a community garden, while the Cathedral develops plans and raises the money needed to build a new structure on the land, an effort that is likely to take two to five years.   We are gathering names of those interested in taking an active role in this effort, both in planning and managing temporary uses as well as those who are interested in being on the garden committee.  No experience in gardening is necessary; this is a community effort for all who are interested in beautifying a great piece of sunny land.  Please email Anita Williams at Anita.trinity@gmail.com if you are interested.  We'll start meeting in July or August to develop a timeline and discuss roles.

Nursery

Renovating the Church Nursery

"A wonderful way to say farewell to Nancy Tennyson"

Canon Nancy Tennyson has spent much of her church life at Trinity Cathedral promoting Christian education and encouragement from toddlers to college-bound young adults. As she retires from her position as Director of Christian Education, it would be a thoughtful and needed gift for the congregation to provide a remembrance of Nancy's leadership. To that end a proposal was made to renovate the church nursery to spruce it up for the next generation of children coming to Trinity. Moms,Pops and Tots

We are asking that each member of Trinity Cathedral make a donation to this project. Ruth Fitch our Junior Warden, will be in charge of the renovation project and has designed plans for new floors, cabinetry and wall designs, depending on the funds raised.

Please be generous and make checks payable to Trinity Cathedral, with a notation: Nursery Renovation. For further questions, contact Rob Stoinoff at 916 372-3563 or see him during the coffee hour on Sundays.

The Episcopal Youth thanks...

...both the Men's Group for donating all the money collected at the last Sunday's  sale of ice cream cones, hot dogs and cotton candy and Alyssa Brown for donating money regularly from her homemade crafts sales to our youth mission trip fund.

Next Week & Beyond

Softball Trinity Softball

The Trinity Spirits Softball team finished in first place (6-2 overall) in the league after last Tuesday night's thriller! Trinity managed to come back in the bottom of the last inning from a 13-3 run deficit, with great hitting and smart base-running. The Spirits were unstoppable!

The Playoffs are next week on Tuesday, June 25th starting at 6:30 PM. Come out and root your Trinity team on to victory in this one-night, single elimination tournament. We play at Roosevelt Park at 10th and P in downtown Sacramento. There is always a wonderful BBQ/potluck hosted by Paradise Baptist Church, so bring a side dish and join in the fun!

Praying Hands Prayer Night at the Cathedral

Wednesday, June 26 at 7pm, Conference Room

Join us for an evening where participants have a chance to experience different approaches to prayer and ask questions.

Noyes Fludde Noyes Fludde is coming!

But there's no need to don the life-jackets. Benjamin Britten's church opera will be performed by Trinity Cathedral's Choristers, with guest soloists, in the dry comfort of St Paul's Episcopal Church at 15th & J Streets.

Based on a fifteenth-century mystery play, it was adapted for Britten's opera in 1957, and has been performed around the world thousands of time. The music is highly original, and very challenging for the performers. The choristers have been working on it for nearly a year! It is especially appropriate to perform it this year, as 2013 is the centennial of Britten's birth.

There will be two performances of Noyes Fludde at St Paul's: Friday, June 28th at 7:00 pm, and a matinee on Saturday, June 29th at 2:00 pm. Please join us!!

Make and Pray the Anglican Rosary

Trinity Women's Retreat August 10

Trinity women and their friends are invited to join us at the lovely Mercy Center in Auburn for our summer retreat Saturday, August 10th, from 9 to 3:30. Participants will learn to make an Anglican Rosary that includes a small wooden cross hand-crafted by our own beloved Harry Katzakian. Then we'll learn several ways to pray with the rosary, seeking peace and a closer relationship with God. The cost of $40 includes a delicious lunch and all materials to make your own rosary. Sign-ups will be available in the Cathedral Bookshop beginning June 26th. Facilitators will be Rev. Anne and Tori Beck.

Contact Rev. Anne McKeever (amckeever@wavecable.com) for more information.
