Canon Nancy Tennyson
This Sunday we will be celebrating the remarkable ministry of Nancy and John Tennyson.  Nancy has been our director of Family Ministries for 21 years and John has been by her side (or behind the camera, or in the kitchen, or in the classroom . . .) the entire time.  I have been in awe of the breadth of their ministry and I know much of what makes this a special place is a result of their vision, hard work and generosity of spirit.  As a thank-you gift, we are raising money to refurbish the Nursery in Nancy's honor.  There is more information about that effort in this edition of the e-newsletter.  We will have an opportunity to pray for Nancy and John at the 9:00 a.m. service and we will have a reception and carnival in the Great Hall at 10:15 a.m.  I hope you can join us.

Brian

Scallop Shell
I can not begin to thank everyone for the many, many ways in which you have all supported me as I prepare to leave on my sabbatical.  I was emailing my youngest son last night and wanted him to know that I leave without any worries and that everyone at every place I work have not only wished me well, offered prayers, but demonstrated their support in ways that free me to have what will undoubtedly be a remarkable summer.  I was stunned at the purple bands as yet another visible sign of God's grace and love in my life.

I love the Cathedral, her people and the fact that she is a specific place in our community where people can find they are so deeply loved by God.  I live a most remarkable life and am privileged to be part of her life.  I am so grateful to (Rev.) Anne for filling in the gap and to (Dean) Brian and the Vestry for allowing sabbaticals to be what each individual staff person needs to grow in rest and grace.

May you all have a truly blessed summer.  I will return Sunday, Sept. 15th and will look forward to being home.

Faithfully,

Lynell+

pilgrimage

In the Cathedral Bookshop, buy pilgrimage stones ($1.00), a beautiful shell ($25.00), or a silicone bracelet that says: "I Walk With Lynell" and "Camino con Lynell" ($2.00); all as reminders to keep her in our prayers during her trip. Many people have pledged to wear the bracelets 24/7 until she returns home!  All proceeds go to support the expenses associated with her pilgrimage.

Hello...Again

Steve Skiffington & Nelson Lucas

Deacon Steve Skiffington and Nelson Lucas

A Note from Rev. Deacon Steve Skiffington

In case you missed it, I GOT ORDAINED ON JUNE 8TH!   I've been a member of the cathedral for ten years, but have been away for the last two serving my field placement training time at St. Michael's in Carmichael. As Al Jolson sang, "I've been away from you a long time...", but as Bishop Beisner has assigned me back to Trinity I think I should introduce myself to those of you who have joined when I was away, and say hello again to my beloved friends at this most marvelous and Christ centered congregation.

I was raised Roman Catholic, attended a Southern Baptist church when I was married to my then wife, met my life partner (now husband) Nelson Lucas in 1983 , and came to the Episcopal Church in 2003. When I joined Trinity I was near the end of my teaching career, and as I was preparing for retirement I felt the call to the Diaconate. In our diocese, training for the Diaconate includes attending the School for Deacons in Berkeley for three years. My studies and my own readings of scripture drew me deeper into my understanding of Jesus and the Kingdom of God, and I knew I wanted to serve him as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. Now that I'm back home, I'm ready to put on my collar, roll up my sleeves and get to work as together we build the Kingdom.

I want to spend my first six months back getting reacquainted with my friends and meeting new ones. I am especially interested in the work you're doing and how I can be of help to your ministries to The World. I know I have a lot of learning and re-learning ahead of me but I also know that 'With God's help' I can once again take my place at the table as we work together to do Christ's work in this world.

Nursery

Renovating the Church Nursery

"A wonderful way to say farewell to Nancy Tennyson"

Canon Nancy Tennyson has spent much of her church life at Trinity Cathedral promoting Christian education and encouragement from toddlers to college-bound young adults. As she retires from her position as Director of Christian Education, it would be a thoughtful and needed gift for the congregation to provide a remembrance of Nancy's leadership. To that end a proposal was made to renovate the church nursery to spruce it up for the next generation of children coming to Trinity.Moms, Pops and Tots

We are asking that each member of Trinity Cathedral make a donation to this project. Ruth Fitch our Junior Warden, will be in charge of the renovation project and has designed plans for new floors, cabinetry and wall designs, depending on the funds raised.

Please be generous and make checks payable to Trinity Cathedral, with a notation: Nursery Renovation. For further questions, contact Rob Stoinoff at 916 372-3563 or see him during the coffee hour on Sundays.

Hiking Trinity Hiking Guild

Saturday, June 15

Hikers,

Well here we are again:  into the summer season and needing a break from the heat.  What comes to mind?  ECHO LAKE, a perineal favorites, cutting at least 20 degrees off of the valley floor forecast.  For those who have been before, you know that we gather at  the Cathedral at 7:45 for an 8:00 departure, in order to beat the crowds and obtain good parking.

It is a medium difficulty hike, and remember if you have been coasting around the block for your exercise, you can add about 8,000 feet to your elevation.  Can make a big difference.  Bring plenty of water; hydrate before you come, and make sure you bring $10.00 cash for your boat ride back.

Looking forward to it.

Trinity Cathedral to Host Street Eucharist
at Pride Parade

This Saturday, June 15th at 10 am

at Crocker Park, corner of 3rd & O Streets

(Look for the rainbow streamers!)

Call 203-5595 for more information.

Please join us at Trinity Cathedral's first-ever street Eucharist at the Pride Festival, and then march with other members of our congregation in the 2013 Pride Parade, always a great way to let our community know that we are a warm and wonderful "Believe Out Loud" welcoming parish. If you want to have fun, and feel loved and appreciated, come out for this event. The LGBTQ community has often been received with hostility by Christian churches-our witness that Trinity welcomes ALL is a powerful and moving manifestation of God's love. ALL ARE WELCOME. Don't miss it!

Besides strong representation from Sacramento's faith community, other parade participants have included the Wells Fargo Bank Stagecoach, PG&E, Regional Transit, SMUD, Sacramento Police and Fire.

The festival follows the parade. Entrance is $10 per person, which is the major fundraiser for Sacramento's Gay & Lesbian Center, which offers many services to Sacramento's LGBTQ community, including educational projects and support groups for youth.

Noyes Fludde Noyes Fludde is coming!

But there's no need to don the life-jackets. Benjamin Britten's church opera will be performed by Trinity Cathedral's Choristers, with guest soloists, in the dry comfort of St Paul's Episcopal Church at 15th & J Streets.

Based on a fifteenth-century mystery play, it was adapted for Britten's opera in 1957, and has been performed around the world thousands of time. The music is highly original, and very challenging for the performers. The choristers have been working on it for nearly a year! It is especially appropriate to perform it this year, as 2013 is the centennial of Britten's birth.

There will be two performances of Noyes Fludde at St Paul's: Friday, June 28th at 7:00 pm, and a matinee on Saturday, June 29th at 2:00 pm. Please join us!!
