TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
|
Greetings!
This Sunday is our patronal feast, Trinity Sunday. It seems a little odd to not have a person as our patron saint, but I guess you can't get any better than having God as the patron of the Cathedral.
The doctrine of the Trinity that we use to talk about God has always puzzled me. Seminary didn't help. I learned about the debates that led to the doctrine and the Greek terms that shaped the debate, but it all felt so abstract.
But after years of worship and prayer as a Christian, I have grown to really appreciate "trinity" as the way we talk about God. The doctrine of the Trinity states that we have one God that exists in three distinct persons.
There are three things I appreciate about this way of talking about God.
First, it makes no sense. I can't understand it. I think that is very important. I don't want a model for God that fits in my brain.
Second, it is primarily a statement of monotheism. There is only one God and that one God created all that is. There is nothing that is that isn't God's creation.
Third, there is something communal about the essence of God. God is communion. God is love. There is an eternal dance of love between the three persons of the Trinity. If we are created in God's image, then there is something communal in our essence. We are created to be in communion. I believe that all of creation bears the fingerprints of the Trinity, and that all of creation was created to be in communion. This is a beautiful way of understanding our interdependence.
I can't say I understand the Trinity. I just accept the trinitarian language of our prayers, and after praying this language for years, insights have developed and deepened.
I hope you can join us this weekend as we worship in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Renovating the Church Nursery
"A wonderful way to say farewell to Nancy Tennyson"
Canon Nancy Tennyson has spent much of her church life at Trinity Cathedral promoting Christian education and encouragement from toddlers to college-bound young adults. As she retires from her position as Director of Christian Education, it would be a thoughtful and needed gift for the congregation to provide a remembrance of Nancy's leadership. To that end a proposal was made to renovate the church nursery to spruce it up for the next generation of children coming to Trinity.
We are asking that each member of Trinity Cathedral make a donation to this project. Ruth Fitch our Junior Warden, will be in charge of the renovation project and has designed plans for new floors, cabinetry and wall designs, depending on the funds raised.
Please be generous and make checks payable to Trinity Cathedral, with a notation: Nursery Renovation. For further questions, contact Rob Stoinoff at 916 372-3563 or see him during the coffee hour on Sundays. |

The LGBTQ community has often been received with hostility by Christian churches-our witness that Trinity welcomes ALL is a powerful and moving manifestation of God's love. ALL ARE WELCOME. Don't miss it!
Besides strong representation from Sacramento's faith community, other parade participants have included the Wells Fargo Bank Stagecoach, PG&E, Regional Transit, SMUD, Sacramento Police and Fire.
The festival follows the parade. Entrance is $10 per person, which is the major fundraiser for Sacramento's Gay & Lesbian Center, which offers many services to Sacramento's LGBTQ community, including educational projects and support groups for youth.
