Greetings!
 | | Steve Skiffington |
Because we are the cathedral of the diocese, we have the honor of hosting ordinations every June. This year, we have three ordinations related to our congregation. Steve Skiffington will be ordained a Deacon on June 8, at 11 a.m. Deacons have a particular role in the church connecting the congregation to the needs of the poor. Steve will be ordained with one other candidate for ordination, Margaret Grayden from St. Martin's in Davis. After ordination, Steve will be joining The Rev. Virginia McNeely. As deacons on staff at the Cathedral, Steve and Virginia will be leading our outreach ministries. I hope you are able to join us on the 8th and support Steve as he begins this new ministry. If you are able to come to the ordination please bring some food to share at the reception following the ordination.
On June 29 we will be hosting ordinations to the transitional diaconate. In the Episcopal Church, those seeking ordination as priests must first serve as deacons for at least six months. While technically those ordained to this capacity are no different than those being ordained as vocational deacons, we use the term "transitional diacionate" to help us differentiate the two. In our diocese, ordinations to the transitional diacionate take place at the Cathedral. The later ordinations to the priesthood occur in the congregation where the ordinand is serving. Two of the candidates being ordained on June 29 have a special relationship with the Cathedral: Anne Arthur and Megan Anderson. Anne Arthur is a member of the Cathedral. While after ordination Anne may have ministry roles in other churches or hospitals, we expect Anne will remain connected to the cathedral, perhaps celebrating communion on Sunday's or during the week. Megan Anderson, from Fairfield, will be joining the staff of Trinity Cathedral to serve as a missioner to young adults and youth.
This is an exciting time for those being ordained as well as for us who will be benefiting from their ministry.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Upcoming Sabbatical for
Canon Lynell Walker
As some in the Trinity community may have already noted, there is a movement afoot at Saint Paul's Church to raise support for Canon Walker's upcoming pilgrimage and spiritual retreat to walk the Camino in Northern Spain in June. This retracing of the steps of Saint James to his burial site and the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela is portrayed in the Martin Sheen/Emilio Estevez movie, "The Way," which was shown two weeks ago at Trinity Cathedral to raise awareness of the significance of this journey in all its aspects: physical, emotional and spiritual. Other members of the Trinity family have taken this "walk" that changes lives and inspires the Spirit within us, especially when it can be shared. This was the case in Joyce Rupp's book about trekking the Camino, "Walk in a Relaxed Manner."
Many members have asked how we can help support Canon Walker's courageous act of stepping out in faith. First, she would dearly appreciate all of us holding her in prayer. She would like as many of us as possible to sign her backpack. On June 9 Saint Paul's will conduct a Blessing of the Boots that will carry her on her arduous hike through mountains, rocks and meadows in changeable weather. Please refer to the bulletin board and the weekly eNewsletter for upcoming events giving us the opportunity to contribute financially to lighten the load for this important effort. Let's all participate, if possible. Lynell departs on June 18 for two months for this intentional, purposeful exercise which will benefit the entire community. Anyone who has attended her TNAC seminars can attest to this.
Any questions or suggestions can be directed to Bruce Roy at cell/text (916)230-9495 or email to barinsac@comcast.net.
Updates and announcements will be made weekly via eNewsletter and posters in the Fellowship Hall. Look out for the scallop shells, the symbol of the Camino. |

ACT Town Meeting
May 22, 2013, 6:30-8:30 pm St. Mark's United Methodist Church
2391 St. Marks Way, Sacramento
Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) brings together congregations and policy makers to advocate for social change. Trinity Cathedral is proud to have been one of the founding congregations of ACT. At Trinity, our organizing committee is known as Trinity ACT or T-ACT. Based on the many one-on-one interviews we conducted last spring, we determined that our priority should be the root causes and solutions to homelessness.
Trinity Cathedral already does a great job ministering to the day-to-day needs of of the homeless with our community dinners, Safe Ground sleep ins, Family Promise hosting, and our on-going support of River City Food Bank. T-ACT hopes to go even further: our goal is to end homelessness in the Sacramento area.
Follow this link to read the 10 Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness Status Report for 2013.
On May 22nd, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2391 St. Marks Way (in the Arden-Arcade area), we will hold a community meeting with city and county officials. Other congregations working on health care and blight will join us. Together, we will ask for commitments to support the most promising local city and county initiatives to address homelessness, end blight in our neighborhoods, and increase access to health care under the new Affordable Care Act for those who currently lack coverage.

Arthritis Walk
Saturday, May 18 at the Capitol
Newcomer Charis Hill is recruiting teammates and funds for her team, Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), for the Arthritis Walk.
Charis was just recently diagnosed with A.S., a rare form of Rheumatoid Arthritis, and is hoping to fund a possible cure for the disease. Ankylosing Spondylitis affects around 1% of the population (a very small number are females); it affects the whole body but is famous for a characteristic fusing of the spine in a fixed, immobile position. Charis suffers from acute, constant pain in her hips and low back as well as other parts of her body during flare-ups; she also finds it difficult to fill her lungs on a consistent basis because her rib cage has likely been partially fused to her spine.
Charis is seeking people to join her team and help raise money for the walk, as well as walk with her on the 18th (either 1 mile or 3 miles). There is no registration fee, and those who raise over $100 earn a free t-shirt for their efforts. To register for her team and/or donate, visit: http://sacarthritiswalk.kintera.org/charis or send her an email at this.is.charis@gmail.com. |
