"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings!
I have written in the past about the annual opportunity I have had to speak to yoga teacher trainees at Zuda Yoga Studio. The studio has now asked me to give a talk that is open to the public. This gives me a rare opportunity to share the teachings of Jesus with young adults who would likely not come to church. I will be speaking at the yoga studio next week on Thursday at 6pm. The talk, "Jesus for the Rest of Us," is designed to counter the perceptions that some people have of Christianity as a religion of judgementalism and hypocrisy. I hope to offer a glimpse into the Jesus of compassion and love that we regularly encounter at Trinity. You are welcome to attend the talk if you like. If you do come, be prepared to sit on the floor. Blankets and cushions will be available. Zuda Yoga Studio is located on the corner of 19th and O streets in Midtown. You can find a description of the course on the Zuda website
Tonight at 7pm at the Cathedral I will be offering my monthly class on the Old Testament readings we have encountered through the Bible Challenge. Tonight I will talk about the end of Judges, Ruth and 1 & 2 Samuel. I will repeat this teaching on Sunday at 10:15.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

ACT Town Meeting
May 22, 2013, 6:30-8:30 pm St. Mark's United Methodist Church
2391 St. Marks Way, Sacramento
Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) brings together congregations and policy makers to advocate for social change. Trinity Cathedral is proud to have been one of the founding congregations of ACT. At Trinity, our organizing committee is known as Trinity ACT or T-ACT. Based on the many one-on-one interviews we conducted last spring, we determined that our priority should be the root causes and solutions to homelessness.
Trinity Cathedral already does a great job ministering to the day-to-day needs of of the homeless with our community dinners, Safe Ground sleep ins, Family Promise hosting, and our on-going support of River City Food Bank. T-ACT hopes to go even further: our goal is to end homelessness in the Sacramento area.
On May 22nd, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2391 St. Marks Way (in the Arden-Arcade area), we will hold a community meeting with city and county officials. Other congregations working on health care and blight will join us. Together, we will ask for commitments to support the most promising local city and county initiatives to address homelessness, end blight in our neighborhoods, and increase access to health care under the new Affordable Care Act for those who currently lack coverage.

NorCal AIDS Cycle
With less than three weeks until the beginning of the NorCal AIDS Cycle, I have switched into "desperation" training mode. A family gathering in the north state over the weekend, presented the opportunity to spend a couple of days at the family cabin near Lassen Volcanic National Park. This was a great opportunity to get some badly-needed training on some hills. On Friday I cycled up from the town of Mineral along hwy 36, up into Lassen Park. The park road is still closed to autos, but open to cyclists, so I rode up to about 7000' of elevation near the Sulphur Works geothermal area. It was a bit surreal riding up a highway that still had steep snowbanks on either side, but it was beautiful and there was no traffic to contend with. And... it was (mostly) downhill all the way back to Mineral. There is hardly anything more thrilling/terrifying than careening down a state highway at 50 kph, especially with loose gravel and sand still on the road from winter. The next morning, I took a short "recovery" ride to the small town of Mill Creek via Mineral Summit, for another bit of short but steep training.
Now, it's just a matter of getting as many miles under my legs as possible over the next three weeks.
Fund raising has been coming along reasonably at this point. My benefit organ concert at Trinity Cathedral last week netted a thousand dollars, giving my fund-raising a much needed boost, and bringing my total so far to just under five thousand dollars. I still have a ways to go to reach my seven-thousand dollar goal. If you've been putting off making YOUR contribution to NorCal AIDS Cycle, time is running out! Just click the link below to contribute online it is quick and easy.
At my benefit concert last week, I shared some interesting statistics:
- Worldwide, over 33 million people have HIV or AIDS
- 28 million of those are in sub-Saharan Africa
- Nine million people have HIV or AIDS in the United States
- There is a new HIV infection every nine minutes (which meant that there were seven new infections during the course of my recital)
- In Sacramento County, there are approximately five thousand diagnosed with HIV or AIDS
Now in the big picture, five thousand doesn't seem like such a big deal. But... if you're one of those five thousand, it's a big deal. If your son or daughter or sister or brother or partner is one of those five thousand, it's a big deal. NorCal AIDS Cycle provides funds to agencies providing direct services to those with this disease. I know for a fact, that many of them would have to close their doors if they lost the funding NCAC provides.
If you haven't contributed yet, I encourage you to do so. Any amount, small or large, makes a big difference to someone who is suffering. And just maybe, we'll eradicate this disease once and for all. And as always, a HUGE Thank You to those who have supported me in this project.

Arthritis Walk
Saturday, May 18 at the Capitol
Newcomer Charis Hill is recruiting teammates and funds for her team, Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), for the Arthritis Walk.
Charis was just recently diagnosed with A.S., a rare form of Rheumatoid Arthritis, and is hoping to fund a possible cure for the disease. Ankylosing Spondylitis affects around 1% of the population (a very small number are females); it affects the whole body but is famous for a characteristic fusing of the spine in a fixed, immobile position. Charis suffers from acute, constant pain in her hips and low back as well as other parts of her body during flare-ups; she also finds it difficult to fill her lungs on a consistent basis because her rib cage has likely been partially fused to her spine.
Charis is seeking people to join her team and help raise money for the walk, as well as walk with her on the 18th (either 1 mile or 3 miles). There is no registration fee, and those who raise over $100 earn a free t-shirt for their efforts. To register for her team and/or donate, visit: http://sacarthritiswalk.kintera.org/charis or send her an email at this.is.charis@gmail.com. |
Apple Tree Help
by Ann Rothschild
Thanks to the Bee's Garden Detectives for showing us how to diminish apple codling moth from our apple tree. The larvae eat into apples and pears, but here's a non-toxic control.
Mix up 1 cup cider vinegar, 1/3 cup dark molasses, a dash of ammonia-add water to make up 1 ½ quarts and pour into a one gallon plastic milk or water jug. Hang the open jug in the tree and it serves as a trap. Keep tree pruned to reachable height and thin out any infested fruit.
