TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
|
Greetings!
Seven years ago I was invited to give a series of talks in New York City with a Tibetan Buddhist Monk. In my talks I simply spoke about how I, as an Episcopalian, understand Jesus and his teachings. I was overwhelmed with the number of people who came up to me afterward and said, "If I had heard this earlier, I never would have left Christianity." Ever since that experience, I have been wondering how to connect our gospel with the people who have left the church because of the poor way Jesus has been represented by many of his followers. At Trinity Cathedral I have experienced a gospel that is gracious and loving. How can that gospel be shared with people who have left Christianity? There are many people who had lovely experiences of Jesus' love as children but left because of how they were treated as adults. Most of these people will not walk into Trinity Cathedral or any other church.
Much of my ministry is driven by a desire to present the gospel to those outside the church. One of my best opportunities to do this came last Thursday when I was invited to speak for two hours to Yoga teacher trainees at Zuda Yoga Studio. I had done this in 2012 and 2011 as well. Of the 33 students, five were Christians. The majority of the others were people who had been involved in the church earlier in their lives but had left. The response to the talks was energizing. Many students stayed after the talk, that ended at 10 p.m., because they wanted to talk more. Others left but have been thanking me outside the class. While at Zuda a couple of days ago, one woman came up to me and said, "Thank you for giving God back to me."
This experience reinforced for me the belief that many people are hungry for the spirituality of love and the community that we can take for granted at Trinity Cathedral. I am wondering how we can move outside the walls of our church to bless those who are hungry for the gospel. I will be looking for more opportunities to do so, and I invite you to join me. If you would like to see what I said, you can watch video segments at: https://vimeo.com/album/2276855
This past weekend the vestry went on its annual retreat. We have a remarkable vestry this year, led by our Senior Warden, Loren Weatherly. Loren has provided a report on our weekend for this enewsletter.

Volunteer Opportunities... |

Family Promise
Hosting Week: March 17-24
Many volunteer opportunities still open!!Please consider offering your time and talent during this week!! It could be part of your Lenten Discipline. There are opportunities to prepare a dinner, help with playing / conversing with the families, and / or spend the night. We will have three families this week with children ranging from 16 months to 9 years old.
As I prepare for this week it is clear that a TEAM of at least two others must be recruited to work with me. It requires a Team effort to coordinate the tasks that need to be done in order to assure a successful hosting week. With a team, the week and/or duties could be divided up so that all the responsibility does not fall on one person. WE NEED A TEAM of co-coordinators. Please prayerfully consider, thencontact me at

From the Senior Warden
Trinity Cathedral's vestry went on retreat at Mercy Center in Auburn on Friday, February 22 and returned to Sacramento on Sunday, February 24. We spent time reviewing, discussing, and affirming the cathedral's core values and mission statement. We also studied and discussed the role and responsibilities of the vestry based on canon (church law), Trinity Cathedral bylaws and policies, and the Letter of Agreement (contract) between the Dean and the cathedral. We reviewed goals set by the vestry in 2012, and set goals for the vestry for 2013. We prayed together, worked together, discerned together, renewed our baptismal vows together, and celebrated eucharist together. This year presents many exciting opportunities for Trinity Cathedral. We are ready, willing, and able, and with God's help and your prayers, we will accomplish much this year. We give thanks to God for your trust and your support.
Your 2013 vestry: Kelly Boutwell, Chaplain; Randall Cheek; Sue Clark; Kevin Donohue; Burt Douglass; Ruth Fitch, Junior Warden; Pat Hill; Mary Hustler; Tom Robbins; Kevin Sanders; Christ Sanft; Sally Smith; Chris Tzimenatos; Loren Weatherly, Senior Warden; Anita Williams.
The Dean of the Cathedral and the Bishop are, by their office, members of the vestry. Liz Magill, Clerk, and Susan Wilson, Treasurer, are elected by the vestry and are not members of the vestry.
