Greetings!

Brian BakerWelcome to Lent!
I appreciate the invitation of Lent to let go of things that get in my way of experiencing the love of God in Christ. I am good at filling my day with distractions. Lent invites me to clear the deck, and for 40 days at least, be more intentional in my prayer and reading. If you haven't tried it yet, I encourage you to take up the Bible Challenge. You can find the readings for the week in this enewsletter. If you are interested in a discussion group, come on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m. or contact Anne McKeever at amckeever@wavecable.com. You will find many other excellent offerings in this newsletter.

Blessings,
Brian

The River City Food Bank and
 NorCal AIDS Cycle

by Canon David Link

As many of you know, for the last two years I have participated in the NorCal AIDS Cycle, a four-day, 330 mile bicycle tour which raises funds for agencies serving those with HIV/AIDS in Northern California. One of the beneficiaries of the ride is the River City Food Bank, who works with C.A.R.E.S. (Center for AIDS Research, Education, and Services) in providing groceries to their patients who are having difficulty making ends meet. I ran into Eileen Thomas the executive director of RCFC a few months ago, and she asked if I would be interested in putting together a NCAC team sponsored by the food closet. And River City Roadies was born!!

Team River City Roadies includes two other Trinity Cathedral members, Gayle Monroe and Adriana Echandia. Adriana, Gayle and I could use YOUR support in raising funds through NorCal AIDS Cycle, to support the excellent agencies such as the River City Food Bank, who provide services from those in our community suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Click on the link below to make general team donation, or to make a donation to an individual rider. And we thank you in advance for your support!

Fellow Hikers,

Well, it is not Feather Falls, but it is a good waterfall nonetheless. Hike this weekend will be to s spot we have never gone before, to Fairy Falls (AKA Shingle Falls) East of Marysville. (Yes, unfortunately there are no good falls within 30 minutes of the cathedral). Described as an easy hike in the book, it is a 5.4 mile RT with an elevation gain of only 300 feet. So, all should be able to make this trek. If you have a friend who has been asking, this is one to invite them for.

We will meet at the Cathedral at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. Expect not to be back until 3:00 at the latest, bring plenty of water and pack a healthy lunch and snacks,

Hope to see you there.

Bible Challenge
Trinity Takes...
Bible Challenge

by The Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever,

Director of Youth and Adult Spiritual Formation.

If you're seeking something to do to make this Lent special, please consider joining us in taking the Bible Challenge for a season.

You may choose to read the Bible six days a week, following the readings found in the left column of every edition of the eNews this year. Or you may choose to read just one story a week, following the selections in the February edition of the Trinity Weekly Bible Challenge and in the March edition available in early March.

If you're already taking the Bible Challenge, please consider making it your Lenten practice to take a few minutes more to pray about a word or phrase that catches your attention in your reading.

Another cool Lenten practice: Please send me a question, comment or response to your reading. My e-mail address is: amckeever@wavecable.com. I'll seek answers to any question, and, with your permission, I'll include your contribution in a future column, with or without your name included.

Today I thank Dennis Hock, a member of the Lunch Bunch Bible Challenge group that meets every Thursday in the Assembly Area from noon to 1:30 p.m., for giving me permission to share a poem he wrote about Peter and Judas, the two disciples who betrayed Jesus.

Rock and Noose

Dennis Hock

Jesus had two friends.

Came a time

when both men had

to claim that.

One's failure was contrapuntal -

Deny: cock crow / deny: cock crow.

The other's darkly poetic -

Kiss: betray.

The denier dissolved back into the crowd

and watched it all unfold, shame rising up

from his chest into his throat.

The betrayer fled in panic,

the clattering of silver on the temple floor

hounding him on to a forsaken field.

Utter aloneness for both.

And who can say why

one scrabbled back until

he found firm footing on a rock,

while the other handed himself over

to the self-damnation of a noose.

And who can judge.

For none of us

have been asked

to kill our God

as a parable

that salvation is seeded

in even the dankest bitterness

of human frailty.

Annual Potluck and Meeting
THANK YOU!

We all want to shout out a great big THANK YOU to our Annual Dinner Meeting Organizers, Tim and Candace Taylor, for helping us all find a table where we could sign up and then helping us get to that table on Sunday evening where we could sit. As with the feeding of the 5,000 we had more than enough places and we had way more than enough food. We all probably had way more than enough fun, as well.

Thank you to Tim and Candace Taylor, AND to all of the table hosts, to everyone who helped us keep our food warm in the kitchen, to everyone who helped with set up and clean up and to everyone who brought all of the yummy food we ate.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!   Now on to 2013!
