TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Greetings!
When I arrived at Trinity Cathedral in early 2006, I realized I had come to a special place. There was just something different about the spiritual depth, openness and generosity in the congregation. I believe Trinity Cathedral is the remarkable congregation it is in large part because of the ministry of Canon Winnie Gaines. Winnie has been a priest at the Cathedral since she was ordained in 1980. She started our Stephen Ministry program which is now one of the largest in the nation and has had a transforming impact on the congregation.
Winnie is now retiring from her active ministry at the Cathedral, although she is still planning on serving at a weekday Eucharists. We will have a service for Winnie at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26. The service will be followed by a reception in the Great Hall. Folks are invited to bring finger-foods to share at the reception.
We will also be taking a collection for the newly created "Winnie Gaines Scholarship Fund for Pastoral Care." This fund will ensure that we can continue the thriving Stephen Ministry program that Winnie started. I hope you will be able to join us and celebrate the ministry of this remarkable woman.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker |

Trinity Takes...
by The Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever,
Director of Youth and Adult Spiritual Formation.
We're off and running with the Bible Challenge at Trinity. Group facilitators are reporting great discussions and more people are registering to receive Bible Challenge e-mail every Sunday. To register, just send an e-mail to Rev. Anne: amckeever@wavecable.com.
The Trinity Office will be CLOSED Monday, January 21st, in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bible Challenge Groups will not meet at the Cathedral on Monday. Deacon Virginia McNeely's first Monday evening meeting of her group at her home in Land Park will happen, as planned, from 7-9 p.m. Please contact Deacon Virginia at virginiamcneely@sbcglobal.net for her address.
It's never too late to join a group or just to drop-in to enjoy the discussion. To better meet your needs, we're open to changing group times. For example, Carol Savoie's Early Bird discussion group on Monday mornings will begin an hour later when it meets next on Monday, January 28, at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Room above the Trinity office. Click here for our current list of Bible Challenge Discussion Groups.
Printed reading lists and bookmarks are still available in the Welcome Center. To find a list of daily readings and meditations for the year, please go to: www.norcalepiscopal.org/meditations.
Over thirty people attended Dean Brian Baker's first monthly Old Testament Teaching last Thursday evening. I highly recommend that everyone interested in the Bible view the video of that event and take a look at the hand-out Dean Baker provided by following this link. If you're curious about who wrote the books of the Bible and when, how to deal with contradictory and odd Bible stories of creation of the world and the first generations, and how to make sense for yourself of who God is, please view this video.
Dean Baker will continue to enlighten us with Bible wisdom for the rest of the year on the first Thursday of the month. Mark your calendars for February 7th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Assembly Area for his next presentation on the Old Testament.
I recommend these two helpful books to anyone seeking an easy, entertaining way to understand the Bible: The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible and The Bible for Dummies. The authors of both offer witty summaries of each book of the Bible, illuminating key stories and characters - and you needn't be an idiot or a dummy to enjoy them.
May your reading of Genesis 28-45, Psalms 10-15, Matthew 10-15 be blessed this week!

E-mail Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com to join the group. The book is available for sale in the Cathedral Bookshop. Two copies of the book are available as "loaners".

In Room I: Canon Lynell Walker will facilitate: Understanding How We Worship based on Dr. Ian S. Markham's book Liturgical Life Principles: How Episcopal Worship Can Lead to Healthy and Authentic Living. Thomas worked as a Senior promotional specialist with the United States Department of the Treasury selling war bonds and brought the Urban League to Atlanta among other achievements. He is the father of Anne Thomas Braxton, Vice Principal, Retired of CK McClatchy and the grandfather of Rosemary Braxton, Lay Preacher at Trinity Cathedral.

February 7: Xanthi Pinkerton on her grandfather's and father's experience in WWII in the Philippines, the infamous Bataan Death March and family history flowing from this time period.
In the Bookshop: Power Through Constructive Thinking by Emmet Fox, presented by Vaughn Wolff. Emmet Fox, a Roman Catholic who became an ordained a minister of Divine Science, wrote A Sermon on the Mount in 1934 on Jesus' teachings that became a practical guide for recovery. While our class is not about alcoholism and recovery, we will study Dr. Fox's writings, beginning with Power Through Constructive Thinking, to find inspiration that can be applied to solve practical problems. Today people continue to be attracted to the principles found in the New Thought movement that has its roots in the early to mid 1800s. God, the Universal Power that is rightfully ours, "is the real source of all things that exists" and that is the meaning of true prosperity.
In the Assembly Area: Bible Challenge discussion group facilitated by Randy Knutson and Rhonda Canby. |

Trinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, January 19
This Saturday we will visit a trail system that we have enjoyed before, the Hidden Valley Regional Park between Auburn and Lincoln. A description of the Park and trail system follows.
A good trail system for all fitness levels, this is a great trail for both grandchildren/grandparents and all in between.
We will carpool from the Cathedral, meet there at 8:45 am for a 9:00 am departure. We will be back at the Cathedral no later than 3.
Look forward to seeing a good group on Saturday. Will be cold, so dress in layers. Remember, dehydration occurs faster when it is cold than when it is hot.
George
Hidden Falls Regional Park, operated by the Placer County Parks and Grounds Department, contains eleven hiking, running, biking, and equestrian trails, ranging in length from .3 to 1.3 miles, with difficulty ratings from ADA Accessible to Easy to Moderate to Difficult. Look at their website by following this link where you can read about this lovely 221-acre, open-space park, tucked away between Auburn and Lincoln. Evensong and Candlemas Procession
Thursday, February 7th at 6:00 pm
Celebrated since the fourth century, the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord, commemorates the journey of Jesus family to the temple, forty days after his birth, according to Jewish custom. St Luke recounts their encounter with the elderly Simeon, who tells Mary and Joseph that their son is the "light to lighten the gentiles, and glory of his people Israel." For hundreds of years, a candle-lit procession symbolizing that "light" became a part of the celebration, and the feast has come to be known in many places as "Candlemas."
On Thursday, February 7th at 6:00 pm, the Trinity Cathedral Choir will sing our monthly service of Choral Evensong, preceded by a Candlemas procession from the Cathedral courtyard. The service will include music by T. Tertius Noble and Iain Quinn, and will conclude with the stunning anthem "O Nata Lux" by Morten Lauridsen.
Please join us for this beautiful and unique service! |
