"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Brian BakerWhen I arrived at Trinity Cathedral almost 7 years ago, there were many people in the congregation involved in outreach ministries, but the congregation was not doing a great job of letting new people know they could get involved. In an effort to help people better understand the breadth of our ministries to those in need, three years ago we began an outreach focus in the season of Epiphany. We will continue that tradition in 2013. In the next several weeks, we will have guest preachers as well as forums and other events to highlight some of the important ways you can join other members of Trinity Cathedral in embodying Christ's love in our broken world. This Sunday, for example, as part of our sermon, two parishioners will be telling about their own experiences of serving those in need. We will also have our second forum on Homelessness at 10:15 in the Cathedral. On February 3 we will have an outreach fair in the Great Hall and on February 10 we will have a special offering for those who would like to make a financial gift that is focused on supporting our outreach ministries.
On another note, tonight at 7pm I will be teaching the first of a monthly series of classes on the Old Testament. It is my intention to offer a look at the texts we are reading as we move through the Old Testament with the Bible Challenge. I hope you can join me.

Tonight there will not be our regular Thursday night dinner. That dinner will resume next week.

Blessings,
Brian

Trinity Takes the...
Bible Challenge

by The Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever,

Director of Youth and Adult Spiritual Formation.

Welcome to our first edition of Trinity Takes the Bible Challenge. I hope this can be a place for Trinity's Bible Challenge participants to learn, to connect and to share their experiences of reading the Bible in a year.

It's never too late to register as a BC participant by contacting Rev. Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com or 530-908-3616.

Last weekend at all the services Bibles were blessed and participants picked up bookmarks for the Old Testament, Psalms and New Testament readings. More bookmarks will be available at the Welcome Center this coming Sunday.

Also available there are printed lists of what to read from Day 1, January 7, 2013, through Day 362, January 6, 2014. You also may find this reading list at our diocesan website at www.norcalepiscopal.org/meditations. There you find daily meditations on the readings, along with a few questions to ponder and a prayer each day.

If you'd like to purchase a book of these meditations, written by bishops (including our own Bishop Barry Beisner) cathedral deans and other Bible scholars, you may purchase a copy of The Bible Challenge: Reading the Bible in a Year in the Trinity Bookshop for $18.

Eleven Trinity Bible Challenge Groups are forming now and some have already begun to meet. Click here for our ever-evolving BC Group List.

Please note this change from the originally published schedule: Vaughn Wolff's Sunday morning group that meets from 11:15 to 12:15 in the Conference Room will meet every first and third Sundays of the month, so it will not meet January 13th, as originally planned. The next meeting of this group will be on January 20th.

Please be patient as these groups form and combine as necessary. If you're seeking to meet at a time and day not listed, please let me know and I'll see if I can find a facilitator to start a new group.

While you are free to "do" the Bible Challenge on your own, joining a group may motivate you to keep up with the readings and, more importantly, gain a greater understanding of what you're reading by sharing and listening to other people's interpretations and questions.

I'm hoping this column will become a place where you can see some of your questions asked and answered, so send your questions to me at amckeever@wavecable.com and I'll do my best to seek answers for you.

Last week we launched the first edition of The Bible Challenge for Families that encourages the reading and discussion of just one story a week. Discussion questions and a prayer are included for each week. This is available to all-not just folks in families-- who may prefer to make the Bible Challenge a weekly event this year. Printed copies are available in the Great Hall and here.

This week also begins Dean Brian Baker's first monthly teachings on the Old Testament readings tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Assembly Area. Subsequent classes will meet the first Thursday of each month.

May your reading of Genesis, Psalms and Matthew be blessed this week as we take this awesome challenge together.

Notes from Nancy...

Christmas Blessings and thank you to all of the people who provided clothing, toys, food and other gifts for needy families at Floyd School. Thank you all so to the members who delivered gifts to families. Trinity Cathedral Church parishioners and friends provided 30 families and about 100 children with gifts and food for Christmas. I am always so grateful for all of you who step up and help instantly. I know at the needs of the families will be taken care of. I am so proud to be part of the Trinity Family who always helps.  Thank you, Thank you to all of you for a job well done.

Another special thank you to all of the children and their parents who participated in the two Christmas Eve and Epiphany pageants. They all went beautifully and were beautiful to be hold. An extra Special thanks to Alison Wescom and Aron Clifton who were pulled out of the 3:00 Christmas Service to be mice at the very last minute. They did a great job. What troopers!  It was a wonderful Christmas and Epiphany!

Blessings,

Canon Nancy Tennyson

While our class is not about alcoholism and recovery, we will study Dr. Fox's writings, beginning with Power Through Constructive Thinking, to find inspiration that can be applied to solve practical problems. Today people continue to be attracted to the principles found in the New Thought movement that has its roots in the early to mid 1800s. God, the Universal Power that is rightfully ours, "is the real source of all things that exists" and that is the meaning of true prosperity.

2013 NorCal AIDS Cycle

by Canon David Link

By now, many of you know the story of my friend Ken, a long time friend and choir singer who battled HIV/AIDS for many years.

Ken was the primary impetus for my decision to participate in the 2011 and 2012 NorCal AIDS Cycle, a 330 mile/four day bike ride through Northern California. His courage, grace, and positive attitude, combined with the excellent care he received, prolonged his life longer than anyone expected. Ken finally succumbed to the disease, just two weeks prior to the 2011 ride. I had planned to ride in Ken's honor... instead I rode in his memory.

The truth is, that funding for AIDS services, education, and medical care is significantly less than it was ten years ago. And along with this drop in funding, the number of new infections is on the rise, especially among young gay men, and women of color. Now, more than ever, additional funding is needed to reverse the trend, and to ease the suffering of those already infected.

So for the third year, I've decided to participate in the NorCal AIDS Cycle for 2013. Individually, I raised more than $6,500 last year, and as a group, we raised well over a quarter-of-a-million dollars. And this year we are aiming for the audacious goal of half-a-million dollars! This money goes directly to service agencies right here in Northern California. Beneficiaries in 2012 included CARES, Golden Rule Services, Caring Choices, and the Sierra Foothills AIDS foundation, among others. This year I am proud to have formed a team sponsored by NCAC beneficiary The River City Food Bank. River City works with CARES to provide meals to those suffering with AIDS, and the "River City Roadies" are proud to be carrying their colors.

I am very appreciative of the support which you have given in the last two years, and know that I can count on your support as take on this challenge again this coming May. Just click this link to make a quick and easy online donationhttp://norcalaidscycle.kintera.org/2013/sierracanon . No donation is too small (OR too small!).

Junk Mail and New Help

By Ann Rothschild

I keep a list of my favorite charities and what I contribute annually. Suddenly, I started to get dozens of new "begging" letters-someone had sold my info to a marketing company. I sent letters to the charities asking them to take me off their mailing lists, but they kept coming. At one point, 94 different charities were asking for my money! I tried "delivery refused," but the Post Office discards such mail and my statements of refusal got nowhere.

However, the website www.41pounds.org promises to eliminate 80-95 % of junk mailings by contacting direct marketers for you.   For $35.00, the service lasts 5 years and you can add to your list. So checkout www.41pounds.org if you are swamped by junk mail and unwanted catalogues, and concerned about the appalling waste of paper and energy. Save trees, water, emissions, time, and the back of your mail carrier! Some facts from the website:

  • The pulp and paper industry is the single largest consumer of water used in industrial activities in developed countries, and it's the third-largest industrial greenhouse gas emitter (after the chemical and steel industries).
    • The average adult receives 41 pounds of junk mail each year. 44% goes to the landfill unopened.
    • 40% of the solid mass that makes up our landfills is paper and paperboard waste.
    • Junk mail inks have high concentrations of heavy metals, making the paper difficult to recycle.
    • $320 million of local taxes are used to dispose of junk mail each year.
    • Transporting junk mail costs $550 million a year.
    • Names and addresses used in bulk mailings reside in mass data-collection networks. Your name is typically worth 3 to 20 cents each time it is sold.
