"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
Happy New Year! After our beautiful Christmas services, I took a few days with my family to go to Sun Valley, Idaho and visit old friends. It was a lovely little break and now I'm back for the beginning of the new year. For me, the new year has been a time of taking stock of my life. When I was in my early twenties and serving in the Army, I would always look back on my year and wonder what I did that made a difference in the world. While I enjoyed being in the Army and I thought I did a good job, I knew that if I were to leave, I would be replaced with an equally good officer. At the time, Andrea and I were serving as high school youth leaders in our Episcopal congregation. This was a ministry that had an obvious impact on the lives of teenagers. As I looked over each year in this phase of my life, I realized that my work with the church was in some ways more fulfilling and important than my work in the Army. As I look at the many ministries at Trinity Cathedral, I see people everywhere who are making an important difference in the lives of others. I am proud of the good work that is being done here. In addition to taking-stock, New Years is a time of making resolutions for the coming year year. This is something at which I usually fail. I usually can't decide on a resolution that I think is worthy of an entire year's effort. Usually I remain in an undecided state until I am saved by Lent. I then come up with disciplines that I want to adopt for the shorter season of Lent. This year, however, is different. Thanks to The Rev. Anne McKeever and the Bible Challenge, I have a built-in resolution. I am going to read the Bible this year. You may think that, because I am a priest, I already read the Bible a lot. Well I do. But there are significant portions of it that I haven't read since I was preparing for seminary 24 years ago. The Bible is such an important collection of books, I think it is a good idea for people to read it at least once in their lives. It is hard to do, however, without a plan and support. Thanks to the Bible Challenge, we are provided with a plan for reading the Bible, daily devotions if we want to supplement our reading and groups for discussion. I will be leading a monthly class to look at the readings in the Old Testament. My first class will be next Thursday, January 10 at 7pm. I hope you will join me in reading the Bible this year. I missed worshiping at Trinity last weekend because I was away with my family. I will miss being with you this weekend because I will be participating in a retreat for the newly formed Board of Trustees of our Diocese. Please keep us in our prayers as we look at how we can support the almost 80 congregations in Northern California. Blessings, Brian The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker |

Labyrinth Ministry:
Would You Like to Carry It On?
Trinity Cathedral has had a Labyrinth ministry for a number of years. Currently people are able to walk and pray the Labyrinth on the third Friday of the month at 6:00PM. The date and time can be changed if we are able to find a regular day and time of the week. Trinity's Labyrinth is canvas. Overseeing this type of prayer time involves getting to Trinity one hour before the scheduled start, rolling out the canvases, setting the environment with candles and meditative music and putting everything away at the end of the prayer time. The total time commitment (with a one hour prayer time that can be extended if desired) is three hours. One person has expressed an interest in continuing this ministry but needs at least two others to work with him. Is that you? If so, please contact Jerry Paré at the office (jpare111452@gmail.com; 916-930-8032) |

Newcomers' Group...
...and everyone who would like to join a "Tour of the Cathedral" with Canon Carey are invited to do so.
We will meet in the Cathedral near the sanctuary after the 9:00am service on Sunday January 6.
We try to tour the sanctuary, the East transept where the columbarium is located. Canon Carey talks about the stain glass window located in that transept. There are several art objects/icons in that transept. They all have interesting stories. We will also try to visit the West transept and the windows in the nave of the church which depict some of the parables and miracles of Jesus -- Canon Carey makes these stories come to life with the windows in the back ground. We have so much to see in the Cathedral we sometimes run out of time.
