"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

As you prepare for the coming of Christmas, I would like to feature a few upcoming events that may help you enter more deeply into this season. If you would like to hear beautiful music and the opportunity to meditate on scripture, I recommend the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Please join the Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Choristers, and Cathedral Handbell Ringers, in this traditional service which originated at King's College, Cambridge, England. Included will be music by Carl Rutti, John Ireland, Otto Goldschmidt, David Willcocks, and much more. Through the lessons from scripture and complimentary music, the story of Jesus' incarnation is told from the earliest Old Testament prophets to St John's profound mysticism surrounding his birth. This service is a lovely way to begin our Christmas celebration at the Cathedral. A freewill offering will benefit the Cathedral's Music program and the River City Food Closet. I would also like to remind you that there is NO 5:10 p.m. Saturday Eucharist this weekend. If you are looking for an opportunity to serve others, Nancy Tennyson is organizing our effort to purchase Christmas Gifts for families of children at Floyd School. So far we have adopted 25 families with 88 children. If you can't buy gifts but would like to wrap them, please come to Trinity TONIGHT at 7 p.m. when we will be wrapping gifts. We also need a few food boxes for the Floyd School families; see Nancy this Sunday or email her at nntennyson@gmail.com if you can help. You can also help cook or serve Christmas dinner on Christmas Day following the 10am service or participate in our weekly Advent Ingatherings (December 16: socks, hats, and scarves for Loaves and Fishes and December 23: adult sweatpants/sweatshirts for WEAVE-Women Escaping a Violent Environment). Or if decorating is your thing, come to the Greening of the Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 23rd following the 11:15 service. Lunch will be served. You can join others in making beautiful garlands that hang in the Cathedral. Don't worry if you don't have any expertise in making garlands, there will be plenty of people who can show you how. Wear casual clothes, bring snippers and gloves. The branches can have sap. Finally, invited your family and friends to join you on Christmas Eve at the Cathedral. Family oriented services are at 3pm and 5pm, a Jazz Service at 7pm and traditional services at 8:30 and 11pm with a Christmas Concert at 10:30. Joy to the World The Lord is Come! Blessings, Brian The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean of the Cathedral |

Labyrinth Ministry:
Would You Like to Carry It On?
Trinity Cathedral has had a Labyrinth ministry for a number of years. Currently people are able to walk and pray the Labyrinth on the third Friday of the month at 6:00PM. The date and time can be changed if we are able to find a regular day and time of the week. Trinity's Labyrinth is canvas. Overseeing this type of prayer time involves getting to Trinity one hour before the scheduled start, rolling out the canvases, setting the environment with candles and meditative music and putting everything away at the end of the prayer time. The total time commitment (with a one hour prayer time that can be extended if desired) is three hours. One person has expressed an interest in continuing this ministry but needs at least two others to work with him. Is that you? If so, please contact Jerry Paré at the office (jpare111452@gmail.com; 916-930-8032) |

 Trinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, December 15
Meet at the cathedral at 8:45 a.m.
for a 9:00 a.m. departure.
Hiker Alert, Finally, what appears to be a good day to hike. So, make this one simple: American River Walk from Folsom to Natomas round trip. This is the one where we turn left after going over the Rainbow Bridge instead of right. I think this is one of the most beautiful segments of the trail. No elevation change, nice chance for a good walk. Hope to see many of you there for our last hike of 2012. |

TREE Tip
It's Time for the Farm Bill Again
By Ann Rothschild.
Did you see Ken Burns' documentary, The Dust Bowl? Powerful, huh? Very pertinent now, in view of the upcoming Farm Bill, a package of legislation that addresses farming practices, subsidies, conservation of wetlands, research, energy, water purity, nutrition in schools, bio-fuels, and encouragement to young farmers. The last Farm Bill of 2008 has expired. Grants will be cut, so now is the time to ask your legislators to support policies and subsidies for healthful, environmentally responsible, and sustainable agricultural practices. We need to be informed because it affects every aspect of our lives. Check such websites as http://sustainableagriculture.net/category/2012-farm-bill/;
www.farmbillfacts.org; www.foodandwaterwatch.org; www.usda.gov; and
www.ag.senate.gov/issues/farm-bill/.
Mark your calendar for TREE's Lenten TNAC series: January 10 and 17. We will view and discuss the film Genetic Roulette, which focuses on the genetically modified food issue. Diane Craig will facilitate. We look forward to seeing you there.
TREE wishes everyone a blessed and joyful Christmas season. Thank you for your support of our crafts and charities-you have sent out blessings to the world. |
