Greetings!
Brian Baker

CONGRATULATIONS! After our initial pledge ingathering on Sunday, we have 205 pledges representing $624,197 in intended gifts for 2013. In comparison, last year we received 197 pledges totaling $617,341. I am always humbled by the generosity of our members. In one week, we have been given over $600,000 in pledges! It inspires me, and I'm sure many others at the Cathedral, to work even harder to honor the trust bestowed on us who have the joy and responsibility of ministry. If you haven't yet pledged, it's not too late. We still have a ways to go to reach our goal of $950,000 in pledges to fully fund next year's work. More importantly, pledging, regardless of the amount, helps the staff and leaders of the congregation know you appreciate their work. You can mail your pledge card, bring it to the office or church, or simply email your expected giving for 2013 to pledgetrinitycathedral@gmail.com.

On a related note, we have received $121,000 in pledges for the purchase of the lots and of that amount, we have received over $76,000 in cash. We are in the process of purchasing the lots now.

I want to thank all of you who voted. Regardless of whether or not you are pleased or disappointed with the outcome, it is so important for us as a community to participate as much as we can in our civic life. Trinity Cathedral was a polling place and we hosted a free dinner on Tuesday. Our neighbors were surprised and very appreciative. There was something special about sitting down and having dinner together after exercising our civic responsibility. The dinner had a lovely feel to it and we had a chance to connect with some of our neighbors who had never been here before. I am grateful to all who worked hard to make this extra dinner a beautiful success.

Blessings,
Brian

Flowers at Trinity Cathedral
Have you enjoyed the flowers while worshipping at Trinity?

Have you ever wondered... Who does those? Could I do that?

Being on the 'flower committee" is a once a month committment, NO previous training required. If you enjoy flowers and appreciate that they are apart of our worship experience... you qualify.

You will be gently guided and 'trained' by our loving team members.

Please call Ruth Fitch 541-1395 or email ruthdesigns4u@gmail.com if you have questions.

Care Giver Needed

The Trinity Cathedral Nursery is in need of a care giver for Sunday mornings from 8:45- 1:00 pm. This person must be 18 years old and be a citizen of the United States. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with young children infants to age 3 and has some experience. The job is primarily on Sunday mornings but sometimes care is needed at other times during the week. A back ground check is done on all employees. If you are interested please contact Nancy Tennyson Tennyson@trinitycathedral.org or 916-446-2513 to submit a resume.

Floyd School

The Johnson Family (Floyd School family of 6) still needs some beds and mattresses for twin beds. The mother would like a mop, broom and dustpan, a television and a baby stroller. The mother was given an umbrella stroller but she says it doesn't work for a small baby.

Thanks to this wonderful congregation the children have shoes, the baby has a crib, we have living room furniture coming, pots and pans and they have a kitchen table and chairs.

My observation is that the daughter could use a dictionary to help do homework. She had a question that I couldn't answer on Wednesday night. I'm guessing down the line a computer would be helpful too.

Also Kathy Ketchum's office is going to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for the family and Rachel Wagoner's family is going to help with Christmas for them.

Bring what ever you can to Canon Nancy Tennyson's office and I will see that the family gets it.

We also need pick up trucks to pick up and deliver items to the family. If you have a pick up that you could help deliver mattresses or beds please contact Nancy
Tennyson at 916-446-2513 or tennyson@trinitycathedral.org.

What a great congregation we have! Thank you to all of you for your generosity!

Blessings,
Canon Tennyson

Water Weekly Reflection

Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:

I was visiting the optometrist for my annual eye exam. The tests with the tech went well; she gave me a second chance on one test. I passed. I went to the exam room where the doctor was having me name letters, the smallest I could manage and I was having a very difficult time. Everything seemed backward especially in my right eye. Finally, I told the doctor how funny the letters appeared - even that they were backward.

From Canon Nancy Tennyson...
Last Sunday was the highlight of my life whenCanon Nancy Tennyson I was installed as a Diocesan Canon. Many thanks to all of you who attended and to those who made the day very special. Thank you to the EYF for the lovely remarks they made and the gift, to Cherie Chamness and the staff for my wonderful prayerbook-hymnal, to Rev. Anne McKeever and the clergy staff for my beautiful Women in Ministry Cross. Extra Special thanks Canon Lynell Walker and Pat Underwood for doing such a terrific job in putting the service, the program and the day together. Great thanks to Kirk Bone, Senior Warden, for nominating me and to Dean Baker and Bishop Beisner for making it all happen. It was a wonderful, blessed and happy day.

Alternative Christmas Fairs: Dec 2 and 9.

by Ann Rothschild

Mark your calendar now for Trinity's Alternative Christmas Fairs, Sundays December 2 and 9, from 8.30 am to 12.30 am, in the Great Hall. "Alternative," that is, to the malls, big box stores, and plastics manufacturers. Come and support local and global artists, craftspeople, and non-profit agencies. Along with notecards, knitwear, jewelry, and artwork from local artists, vendors include

  • Pottery from Nicaragua
  • Crafts from African Team Ministries
  • Crafts from Nepal
  • TREE's offerings of stainless steel bottles, doggie poop bags, and solar cookers.

Christmas gift-giving can include donations to charities in someone's name. You may buy a micro-credit loan for honey production, education for AIDS orphans, basic sanitation and clean water, or a flock of chickens. You receive cards to send to the people in whose name you gave. Donations open up the world for children, too. Ask the children in your life to select gifts from a catalog or website. Give each child a set amount of money to spend and allow them to choose gifts that will benefit needy children. Give them the joy of contributing to the world.

Episcopal Relief and Development has a catalog at www.er-d.org/giftsforlife or call 1-800-334-7626, Ext. 5129.

Weekly Recipe: Balsamic Marinated Chicken

Sweet-tart balsamic vinegar spiked with garlic and Italian seasoning makes a fast and flavorful marinade for chicken. Serve with sliced tomatoes and grilled eggplant slices.

Ingredients:
¼ cup of extra-virgin olive oil
¼ cup of balsamic vinegar
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
4 boneless, skinless chicken breast 3 to 4 oz each (see Note)

Directions:
Whisk oil, vinegar, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper in a bowl until well combined.
Place chicken in a shallow dish or 1 gallon sealable plastic bag.
Add the marinade and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 12 hours.
Remove from the marinade and pat dry.
Preheat grill to medium-high or position a rack in upper third of oven and preheat broiler.

To grill: Oil the grill rack (see Tip).
Grill the chicken, turning once, 4 to 8 minutes per side, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F.
To broil: Line a broiler pan (or baking sheet) with foil and coat with cooking spray.
Place the chicken on the foil.
Broil, watching carefully and turning at least once, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F, 10 to 15 minutes total.

Tip:
It's difficult to find an individual chicken breast small enough for one portion.
Removing the thin strip of meat from the underside of a 5 ounce breast (the chicken tender) removes about 1 ounce of meat and yields a perfect 4 ounce portion.
Wrap and freeze the tenders and when you have gathered enough, use them in a stir-fry or for oven baked chicken fingers.
If you can only find chicken breasts closer to 8 to 9 ounce each, you'll only need 2 breasts for 4 servings - cut each one in half before cooking.
Oiling a grill rack before you grill foods helps ensure that the food won't stick.
Oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. (Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill.)

Make Ahead Tip:
Cover and refrigerate the marinade for up to 3 days; marinate the chicken for up to 12 hours.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Here's a wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit! Bring the whole family to see a delightfully funny play titled, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," directed by Michael Walker of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Carmichael. The play is certainly not about your typical Christmas pageant . . . it is a pageant that is invaded by the Herdman's who are "the worst kids in the whole history of the world." What chaos . . . and joyful moments result!

Two performances only with dessert reception
after each performance:

Saturday, December 8 at 7 PM
Sunday, December 9 at 2 PM

Performance Location: St. Michael's Church, 2140 Mission Avenue, Carmichael
