"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!
Brian Baker

This is an important Sunday in the life of our congregation. First, Bishop Beisner will be coming for his official annual visitation. The Bishop not only leads the diocese but he connects us with Christians around the world. The Bishop reminds us that we are about something much larger than our local congregation. We are part of a spiritual movement that spans the globe and transcends time. The Bishop will be confirming members at the 11:15 service.
Second, Bishop Beisner will be installing Nancy Tennyson as a canon of the Diocese. "Canon" is an honorific title for people who have played a significant role in the life of the diocese. Canon-to-be Nancy Tennyson has served the Cathedral, the Diocese and the Episcopal Church for over 20 years through her ministry to children, families and educators. Personally it has been a blessing to work with her. Not only is she remarkably gifted in organizing classes and activities, her energy and passion impel her to constantly expand her ministries. For example, Nancy is responsible for the many ways we serve the children at Floyd School (formerly Jed Smith.) This is an area of ministry that does not directly fall under Nancy's responsibility, but because of her heart for serving children, she has eagerly led our efforts in the school.

Third, we will have our pledge ingathering this weekend. Pledging is important, not only for the financial life of the congregation, but it also indicates support for the ministries and ministers of the congregation. I encourage everybody to pledge, even if you aren't able to pledge a great deal for 2013. Every pledge is important.

I hope to see you this weekend.

Blessings,
Brian

ReflectionsWeekly Reflection

Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:

(Click to read Luke 11:37-52)

One of the many reasons I love Trinity Cathedral and the Episcopal Church is the emphasis on having a relationship with Christ and each other, rather than the religious rules.

Anne McKeever +From the Rev. Anne McKeever

I offer gratitude to my Trinity Family for your  love and support as I've coped with pneumonia and pertussis (whooping cough) these last six weeks. I love my Trinity Family! Thanks, too, for your heartfelt sympathy and condolences for the Dryden and McKeever families for the death of our beloved mother June Anne Dryden. She died a beautiful, peaceful death in hospice care October 17th after suffering a stroke on October 10th. Wednesday we moved my father, Harold Dryden, o a studio apartment in St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland, the same community that offered my mother's hospice cottage. All are welcome to attend the service for Junie on Saturday, November 17, at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second Street, Woodland, with a luncheon to follow in the Great Hall. I am under strict doctor's orders to take it easy and to talk as little as possible. This is challenging for me, as I love to talk. Please when you greet me, do all the talking and ask me few questions. If you catch me babbling away, please give me the gentle sign for "Hush" with your finger to your lips. I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday when we celebrate baptisms, confirmations and the canonization of my role model and dear frriend, Nancy Tennyson.

Choral Evensong for All Saints Day
Thursday, November 1 at 6:00pm

Cathedral Choir Join the Cathedral Choir as we celebrate the Feast of All Saints. Included will be music by Healey Willan and Iain Quinn, and the spectacular anthem "Let all mortal flesh" by Sir Edward Bairstow.

Evening Prayer, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is a service that has deep roots in the worship of the church. It is mainly derived from the monastic offices in the middle ages, but it also has features that go back to the earliest period of the Christian church. The heart of the service is the regular recitation of the Psalms, and the systematic reading from the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

As is customary in churches with a choral tradition, the service is adorned with musical settings of the psalms, canticles, and anthems that come from the great repertoire of church music from the Renaissance to the present time. The congregation participates through active listening and meditation. Thus we join in offering to God our worship, which is part of a much greater whole: the worship of the Church of God in every part of the world.

Come and finish your day with a beautiful, quiet, and stress reducing service.

Commemoration of All Faithful Departed

Friday, November 2 at 9 am

We will gather in the Cathedral to remember the All Faithful Departed. It is a liturgy that celebrates the lives of those we love but see no longer and is rooted in the Good News of the Resurrection.  Please join us on this holy day.

Impact Teen Drivers logoImpact Teen Driver
Comes to Trinity to
Save Lives
Friday, November 2, 6 - 8:30pm in the Great Hall

Reckless and distracted driving is the #1 killer of American teens. Reckless driving is doing anything behind the wheel that causes loss of control. Distracted driving is allowing anything to distract the driver, from texting, talking on the phone and applying makeup, to driving with loud music. We adults are guilty of reckless and distracted driving, too. We need to educate our ourselves to stop the epidemic of deaths that happen when our eyes leave the road for even a second.

Trinity's Episcopal Youth Fellowship invites everyone, young adults, parents, adults without children, grandparents, friends and neighbors to join us on Friday, November 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. We'll begin with a potluck dinner, so if you want to join us, please bring some good food to share. If you'd like to come just for the program, we'll begin the Impact Teen Driver at 7 p.m. The program with discussion is about ninety minutes.

Our guest speaker will be Martha Tessman. On July 8, 2007, Martha's son Donovan was killed in a car crash three weeks before he turned 17. In 2009 Martha partnered with Impact Teen Drivers to help spread the message about the very real dangers of reckless and distracted driving. Her presentations to teens leave a lasting impression that affects the way they think about their responsibilities while driving. Martha's message helps make Impact's program real to teens.

This program is sponsored by the California Highway Patrol, California Casualty, the California Teachers Association, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the California Department of Education and the California State PTA.

Visit the Impact Teen Drivers website at http://www.impactteendrivers.org

God bless parishioner Curry Mayer for bringing this program to our Trinity family. I hope to see you on November 2nd! Please contact Rev. Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com to say you'll come for the potluck so we can be prepared.
HikingTrinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, November 3

Hikers,

A trip that this group has never taken is up to the Gray Lodge Wildlife Refuge outside of Gridley, about 60 miles north of Sacramento. This is a great time of year for watching the birds on their migratory path. The walk is flat [like that at Cosumnes River] and there are about 2.5 miles of hiking trails. Bring your binocs, cameras, lunch and water, meet at the cathedral at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. We will be back at the cathedral no later than 3:00. I will have maps for each driver. Weather is supposed to be sunny with a high of 71, and I don't think this falls moisture will have made the trails muddy, maybe damp is all.

Was happy to have had 4 new faces on our last walk/hike and hope that we see those faces and more new hikers on this wal as well.

Choral Evensong at St. Paul's
Saturday, November 3 at 4pm at theSaint Paul's
corner of 15th and J Streets

Lee Lovallo will be directing the Antelope Renaissance Choir in a Choral Evensong at St. Paul's this Saturday afternoon at 4pm. This is a beautiful setting to the monastic office and is a wonderful way to pray and experience peace during these hectic days. Fr. Peter Rodgers and Canon Lynell Walker will officiate.
Fall Back Clock
Set your clocks BACK one hour before bed
on Saturday, November 3.

The past 2 months have been very busy for the Floyd School Clothes Closet and in Josephine Hein's words "the clothes closet supplies are decimated." So we are looking for gently used children's clothing from infant to 6th grade. We are especially in need of underwear and socks for both boys and girls. The Clothes Closet policy is to give two pairs of socks and underwear for each child and our supply is gone. We also need warm sweatshirts and or jackets as well as long pants for all children.

Along with the Clothes Closet our Back Snack supplies are dwindling. We need oatmeal packets, fruit cups, maccaroni & cheese boxes, tuna peanut butter and granola bars.

Please place all of your donations in the Floyd School barrels under the stairs.

This week a new family, the Johnson family, has come to Floyd School. who. The single mom family is from New York and has 5 children ages 13, 9, 7, 5 and 5 month old baby. We were able to get the baby clothing and diapers but the older children need shoes and clothing. They also need beds and bedding, kitchen chairs, and living room furniture. If you can help please contact Nancy Tennyson.

First Grade Books

One of the first grade teachers is looking for gently used books for the children in her class to take home. Please place any children's books you can donate in the Floyd school barrels.

Thanksgiving I am prayerfully looking for "a few good women/men" to help me with this ministry - being my assistants, if you will, to share the work load. I have been thinking and praying about this for some time. Now is the time to put my thoughts and wishes into action. I need help. If this "speaks" to you I welcome the opportunity to talk with you.

Michael Pollan and the Food Movement

by Ann Rothschild

"Vote for the Dinner Party," by UC Berkeley journalism professor Michael Pollan (New York Times Magazine, October 14) describes the "food movement" in America and our growing interest in healthy food and in knowing more about its production. He hopes this movement will grow enough to influence both food policies and large agri-businesses. Public trust has been betrayed by industrial food production: chemicals flavoring food, pharmaceuticals used in meat production, concentrated animal feeding operations, and genetically modified food-all requiring investigative reporting to expose the practices food conglomerates do not tell us about. Some salient points he makes:

  • genetically modified foods "don't offer the eater any benefits whatsoever-only a potential, as yet undetermined, risk."
  • In 1992 Monsanto and others "persuaded the Food and Drug Administration-over the objection of its own scientists-that the new crops were "substantially equivalent" to the old and so did not need to be labeled, much less regulated." So the new crops were revolutionary, needed patents and government support, but did not need to be labeled?
  • More than 60 other countries label their GMOs, including China, Japan, European Union, and Russia.
  • Monsanto and Dupont have spent $12 million to defeat Prop 37.
  • Proposition 37 is about more than GMOs: the fight is really "about the power of Big Food," their "corporate control of regulation; lack of transparency (for consumers) and lack of choice (for farmers); an intensifying rain of pesticides on ever-expanding monocultures; and the monopolization of seeds...the genetic resources on which all of humanity depends."
  • Although flawed, California's Prop. 37 gives information about the food we eat and a voice to all people, not just the elite.

Michael Pollan, and California Interfaith Power and Light endorse Prop. 37.

Other points to note:

  • Children and infants are especially vulnerable to the dangers of GMOs.
  • Tests found GM soy in 4 popular soy-based infant formulas (Similac Soy, Enfamil Pro Soybee, Walmart Soy, Gerber Good Start Soy).
  • The US Government's WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, distributing infant formula to over 2 million moms in 50 states, offers only GM brands.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Here's a wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit! Bring the whole family to see a delightfully funny play titled, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," directed by Michael Walker of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Carmichael.
