TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
|
We are beginning our 2013 pledge drive. I encourage you to be as generous in your giving as you can. While I have preached about the spiritual benefits of generosity in the past, I would like to now mention some of the more mundane yet essential aspects of our financial stewardship at the Cathedral. We operate on a very lean budget at Trinity. This budget became austere with the economic downturn. We stopped offering any salary increases, the hours of our custodians were cut, we did not replace The Rev. Kathleen Kelly when she left and we cut funding to our music and other programs. These cuts are not sustainable; it is time for us to build our program and operations again. Trinity Cathedral is a place where people's lives are transformed and I believe it is essential that we care for our facilities and the staff that work so hard to support our ministries. I encourage you, if you are able, to increase your pledge. I will be increasing mine by at least 15%. I would also encourage everybody to pledge, regardless of the amount. Your pledge helps us know we have your support and offers important encouragement to the staff and leadership of the congregation. You should receive a pledge brochure and pledge card in the mail this week. If you don't, please call the Cathedral office at (916) 446-2513. We will have a pledge ingathering on Sunday, November 4
Blessings,
Brian

 Weekly Reflection
Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:
Do not devise a lie against your brother, or do the same to a friend. Refuse to utter any lie, for it is a habit that results in no good. (Ecclesiasticus 7: 11-13)
Ecclesiasticus - "the Church's book" - is also known as Sirach because it was written by Yeshua son of Eleazar son of Sirach. It is a book of wisdom teachings, highly regarded by rabbinic literature, and similar to the book of Proverbs. Sirach was not included in the canon of the Hebrew scripture, and was not included in the Old Testament of the Christian church. It is part of a group of writings used by our Church as examples of life and instructions in manners.

Back Snack shelves at Floyd School. |
The Back Snack program shelves are almost empty. We are in
desperate need of peanut butter, tuna, boxes of Mac and Cheese and fruit cups. Please bring your donations to the Floyd school barrels under the stairs. Thank you so much for your help.
We are in need of 6 more Secret Pals for the staff at Floyd School. A secret Pal is a person who has a staff member that he or she prays for and helps with notes of encouragement, small gifts or other things that the staff member might need. Each staff member fills out a form with information about themselves, their birth date, job description, favorite cookie, author, and or sports team. The Secret Pal responds during the school year as they are able. We like to try to remember the staff on holidays and their birthday as well as whenever you can. At eh end of the School year we have a luncheon for the staff and Secret Pals so they can meet.
Please let Mary Hustler mmhust@msn.com 916-715-6942, know if you can help. We would like to have all Secret Pals in Place by Halloween. |

Choral Evensong for All Saints Day
Thursday, November 1 at 6:00pm
Join the Cathedral Choir as we celebrate the Feast of All Saints. Included will be music by Healey Willan and Iain Quinn, and the spectacular anthem "Let all mortal flesh" by Sir Edward Bairstow.
Evening Prayer, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is a service that has deep roots in the worship of the church. It is mainly derived from the monastic offices in the middle ages, but it also has features that go back to the earliest period of the Christian church. The heart of the service is the regular recitation of the Psalms, and the systematic reading from the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
As is customary in churches with a choral tradition, the service is adorned with musical settings of the psalms, canticles, and anthems that come from the great repertoire of church music from the Renaissance to the present time. The congregation participates through active listening and meditation. Thus we join in offering to God our worship, which is part of a much greater whole: the worship of the Church of God in every part of the world.
Come and finish your day with a beautiful, quiet, and stress reducing service. |
Impact Teen Driver
Comes to Trinity to
Save Lives
Friday, November 2, 6 - 8:30pm in the Great Hall
Reckless and distracted driving is the #1 killer of American teens. Reckless driving is doing anything behind the wheel that causes loss of control. Distracted driving is allowing anything to distract the driver, from texting, talking on the phone and applying makeup, to driving with loud music. We adults are guilty of reckless and distracted driving, too. We need to educate our ourselves to stop the epidemic of deaths that happen when our eyes leave the road for even a second.
Trinity's Episcopal Youth Fellowship invites everyone, young adults, parents, adults without children, grandparents, friends and neighbors to join us on Friday, November 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. We'll begin with a potluck dinner, so if you want to join us, please bring some good food to share. If you'd like to come just for the program, we'll begin the Impact Teen Driver at 7 p.m. The program with discussion is about ninety minutes.
Our guest speaker will be Martha Tessman. On July 8, 2007, Martha's son Donovan was killed in a car crash three weeks before he turned 17. In 2009 Martha partnered with Impact Teen Drivers to help spread the message about the very real dangers of reckless and distracted driving. Her presentations to teens leave a lasting impression that affects the way they think about their responsibilities while driving. Martha's message helps make Impact's program real to teens.
This program is sponsored by the California Highway Patrol, California Casualty, the California Teachers Association, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the California Department of Education and the California State PTA.
God bless parishioner Curry Mayer for bringing this program to our Trinity family. I hope to see you on November 2nd! Please contact Rev. Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com to say you'll come for the potluck so we can be prepared. |

Special Veterans Day Remembrance
Sunday, November 11
This year Veteran's Day falls on a Sunday and we would like to honor the day with special prayers in the liturgy and displays of special memorabilia in the Great Hall during the coffee hours. Do you have a special memento, story, photograph, etc. honoring your service or that of a friend, family member, or loved one? We know we have lots of men and women veterans in the congregation, from World War II to active duty personnel serving at home and abroad today, not to mention memories and mementos from earlier times and conflicts. Contact Beau Carter (beaucarter2@gmail.com) if you would like to participate and let him know what you plan to bring. |
Transgender Day of Remembrance
Saturday, November 17 at 6:30 pm
Trinity Cathedral will host the annual interfaith Candlelight Vigil in observance of the 14th International Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. This vigil will be dedicated to the memories of our brothers and sisters who have fallen to ignorance and intolerance and to our commitment to strive to make this world safe for all. There will be refreshment in the Great Hall after the memorial. All are welcome. Visit http://www.sacgender.org/tdor for more information. |

Family Promise
November 18-25
YES, that is Thanksgiving Week and I will need help. And what a wonderful way for you to give thanks for your abundance - by giving of your time and talent, helping to prepare a warm, safe and welcome space for our three families. The sign-up poster is in the hall next to the bookshop - ready and waiting for your name to be added!!
I am prayerfully looking for "a few good women/men" to help me with this ministry - being my assistants, if you will, to share the work load. I have been thinking and praying about this for some time. Now is the time to put my thoughts and wishes into action. I need help. If this "speaks" to you I welcome the opportunity to talk with you.
