Greetings!
I would like to thank the staff and volunteers for their hard work these past two weeks. I was given a short-notice opportunity to travel to India for a week. While there, I tried hard to not drink the water. Upon my return, I got very sick. Some water must have entered my system, perhaps in a drink I was served in the hotel. Anyway, the volunteers and staff stepped up in my absence and for that I am very grateful.
The trip to India was very moving and at times, noticeably holy. I was adopted into a group of Zen Buddhist monks who practice mindful living. They ate slowly, paying attention to their food. Whenever they heard a bell ring, they would stop and focus on their breathing. They would often walk slowly to places. It was quite a change from the frenetic way I often live my life. Through a local guide, I got to see how life is lived in India off the tourist circuit. I went to a home of a local family for tea. I walked through back alleys to get to the Ganges River, where I saw Indians ritually bathing in this river considered holy by Hindus. I saw a cremation on the banks of the river. I had a great trip, AND I was very, very happy to come home. Although I was only away a few days, I found myself eager to return home to Sacramento and to Trinity Cathedral. That visit to another world deepened my appreciation to what I have in this world, particularly the fellowship and spiritual practice at the Cathedral. I hope you are able to join me at our dinner Saturday night. It's not too late -- we still have two tables open. Blessings, Brian The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean of the Cathedral |

Senior Warden Report
The September Vestry meeting was busy. Pat Hill offered a lovely opening prayer and Loren Weatherly gave a brief prayer report. Loren shared with us his communications with those members of Trinity Cathedral that are on his prayer list.
Prior to Bible Study, which is customarily after the prayer report, we deliberated and filled two vacancies on the Vestry. If vacancies occur during the year, the Vestry can fill those vacancies. Anita Williams and Ruth Fitch have agreed to assume the terms of Adrianna Echandia and David Rickert. Please thank all of them for their faithful service to Trinity Cathedral.
Susan Van Dyke led us in a thought provoking Bible Study. This time, along with our prayer and prayer report, always remind me of our purpose at Trinity which is to be "A growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world."
We discussed the candidacies of Randy Knutson and Anne Arthur. We recommended that Randy become a Postulant to the Ordained Priesthood. We also discussed Anne's candidacy for Holy Orders. As is our practice, we will make a recommendation on Anne's candidacy at our next meeting. These recommendations are an important Vestry responsibility and we usually take two meetings to make a recommendation. The burden of this responsibility is lessened by the work of the Congregation's Committee on the Ministry or CCOM, which is led by Tom Pace. The CCOM meets regularly with the candidates and helps them prepare for their future.
We received an update on our Homeless Ministry. Virginia McNeely presented a set of guidelines that included moving the public meal service from Thursdays to Wednesdays. There will be a Dean's forum on the Homeless Ministry on November 18th.
Wendy Mustain gave us an update on the Website. The information and the capabilities of the site are exciting developments for Trinity.
The Vestry authorized the Dean Baker and the Senior Warden to sign a purchase and sale agreement for the 27th Street lots. The generosity of the congregation resulted in a capital campaign which raised $120,000. We hope to complete the transaction and take title to the lots by the end of the year.
Every Vestry meeting reminds me the vibrancy of our congregation. The September meeting was no exception: candidates for Holy Orders, a new Web Site, our Homeless Ministry and the purchase of the lots on 27th Street. Trinity is alive and well and is "A growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world."

 Weekly Reflection
Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:

 Trinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, October 20, 8:45am
at the Cathedral
The hike scheduled for October 6 has been moved to October 20.
Dear Hikers,
Bah-Humbug!! It is too late in the season to do Echo Lake, as the facilities closed down on the first weekend in September. So, we will continue with our low impact, local hikes by taking in a group favorite to the Consumnes River Preserve, south of Sacramento off of Twin Lakes Road. It is a beautiful walk/hike and we should be back in the lower 80's by Saturday. It is a total 4 mile loop hike and is an elevation gain of about 5 feet, so shouldn't challenge anyone. Bring plenty of water [remember, the best time to hydrate is before you start on the hike, not when you get thirsty].
We will meet at the cathedral at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. departure. We should be back at the cathedral at 1:30 p.m. at the very latest, so those with plans in the early afternoon can make them both.
Hope to see a good group for this walk.

Stephen Ministry Workshop
Saturday, October 20, 9:00am - 1:00pm
At Trinity Cathedral
Want to learn to care for people who are grieving and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way?
This half-day workshop is designed both to enhance participants' caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served.
One reason we're so excited about helping other congregations learn about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began Stephen Ministry in 1977, over 300 laypeople have gone through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality one-to-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a great way to learn more.
Members of Trinity are invited to attend the workshop free of charge. However, it is still important to pre-register no later than October 12th, so that we will have plenty of materials on the day of the workshop. Please contact Susan Wilson at 835-2799 or email her at snbwilson@gmail.com if you would like to be added to our congregation's list of participants. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity for personal growth and to learn more about Stephen Ministry.

Watch Out! Watch Out!
The Saints are Coming!
The celebration of Halloween or All Hallows Eve is linked with the fact that on the next day All Hallows or All Saints Day, November 1, we commemorate with joy the saints, men and women, who have gone to Heaven and are now rejoicing with God forever! Many think that the ghosts and souls theme of Halloween is very appropriate for the eve of All Saints Day - Satan is angry thinking about all of those saints who slipped through his clutches. With that in mind let us prepare for Sunday, October 28 for the Men's Group famous Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast and Family Pumpkin Night that helps launch this season of rejoicing with the saints and party on.
The Men's Group Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast will begin at 8:30am with delicious Pumpkin Pancakes and other goodies.
Individuals $5.00 and Families $12.00 Then after the 9:00 service we are inviting everyone to wear their costumes for the Trinity Costume parade in the Great Hall. Family Pumpkin Night is at 5:00pm that evening. We will eat a soup supper with pumpkin and other delicious soups, then each family will carve a pumpkin and then we will process into the Cathedral for our service with our pumpkins. Dean Baker will share with us more about all Hallows Eve and All Saints Day. Be sure to wear your costumes for Pumpkin night as well. Individuals $5.00 and Families $12.00. Sign up at the Welcome Center on the clip board with the pumpkin. So get your costume ready and save the date so you will be ready for the Halloween and All Saints celebration!

TREE Tip
Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) and Economic Concerns
by Diane Craig
"In India, every 30 minutes, a farmer kills himself." These words open the trailer for the 2012 documentary, Bitter Seeds, by Manjusha Amberwar. The seeds are genetically modified. Instead of saving seeds as they did in the past, farmers must purchase the patented seeds each year, which is an expense they can't afford. Moreover, when it doesn't rain, when parasites intrude, they cannot pay back the debts they incurred to buy the seeds. In desperation, they commit suicide.
This situation cannot easily change. 90% of India's cotton crop is now GMO. Dr Suman Sahai of Gene Campaign notes that "Seed agents are offered higher commission for Bt [genetically modified] cotton rather than for traditional seeds.'' Seed agents make new loans only for the GMO seeds. (1)
The situation highlights two economic concerns relating to GMOs:
- Increased costs to farmers for seeds and pesticides, and
- Decreased food security if GMO monoculture food crops fail
More numbers:
- In the USA, the about-90%-GMO crops also are largely-subsidized crops. Federal farm subsidies from 1995-2011 totaled $81.7 billion for corn and $26.4 billion for soy (together, ~55% of total farm subsidies). (2)
- 3 agencies (the EPA, USDA and FDA) each have partial responsibility for regulating GMO food crops.
- Monsanto alone holds more than 4,963 GMO seed patents (3).
This ends the GMO TREE Tip series. Because of a word limit, we had to omit much. Stop by the TREE table for more information, to share your feedback, or find out what we can do.
