Thursday Lunch Bunch

with Canon Walker and The Way

Thursday, October 4 and 11 at noon in the Assembly Area

Canon Lynell Walker will introduce the film, The Way, that we'll be viewing on those two Thursdays. The film follows a grieving father, played by Martin Sheen, as he walks the ancient Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) with other pilgrims, all on their own spiritual journeys. The Way invites viewers to consider that "Life is too big to walk it alone." To learn more about the film follow this link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441912/

Canon Lynell was so inspired by this film that she has set a goal to walk The Way during her summer sabbatical in 2013.

Come eat the lunch you bring as we enjoy a good film and good discussion. For more information Contact: Rev. Anne McKeever

Reflections Weekly Reflection

Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:

  Choral Evensong
TONIGHT - Thursday, October 4 at 6:00pm

One of the most wonderful liturgical and musical traditions in the Anglican Church is the service of Choral Evensong. The Trinity Cathedral Choir has been singing Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) on a regular basis for over twenty years, and has even sung it in England's greatest Cathedrals.

Evening Prayer, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is a service that has deep roots in the worship of the church. It is mainly derived from the monastic offices in the middle ages, but it also has features that go back to the earliest period of the Christian church. The heart of the service is the regular recitation of the Psalms, and the systematic reading from the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. At Trinity Cathedral, the service is presented using the order from the Book of Common Prayer, with its beautiful and ageless prose. As is customary in churches with a choral tradition, the service is adorned with musical settings of the hymns, psalms, canticles, and anthems that come from the greatrepertoire of church music from the Renaissance to the present time.

Our first choral evensong for the season will be tonight which is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, and we will hear music by Charles Wood, William Smith of Durham, Gerre Hancock, Herbert Sumsion, and Arthur Baynon. And we'll conclude with the hymn "Make me a servant of your peace" based on St. Francis' famous prayer. Please join the Cathedral Choir for this lovely traditional Anglican service!
HikingTrinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, October 6, 8:45am
at the Cathedral

Dear Hikers,

Bah-Humbug!! It is too late in the season to do Echo Lake, as the facilities closed down on the first weekend in September. So, we will continue with our low impact, local hikes by taking in a group favorite to the Consumnes River Preserve, south of Sacramento off of Twin Lakes Road. It is a beautiful walk/hike and we should be back in the lower 80's by Saturday. It is a total 4 mile loop hike and is an elevation gain of about 5 feet, so shouldn't challenge anyone. Bring plenty of water [remember, the best time to hydrate is before you start on the hike, not when you get thirsty].

We will meet at the cathedral at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. departure. We should be back at the cathedral at 1:30 p.m. at the very latest, so those with plans in the early afternoon can make them both.

Hope to see a good group for this walk.

Stephen MinistryStephen Ministry Workshop

Saturday, October 20, 9:00am - 1:00pm

At Trinity Cathedral

Want to learn to care for people who are grieving and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way?

This half-day workshop is designed both to enhance participants' caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served.

One reason we're so excited about helping other congregations learn about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began Stephen Ministry in 1977, over 300 laypeople have gone through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality one-to-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a great way to learn more.

Members of Trinity are invited to attend the workshop free of charge. However, it is still important to pre-register no later than October 12th, so that we will have plenty of materials on the day of the workshop. Please contact Susan Wilson at 835-2799 or email her at snbwilson@gmail.com if you would like to be added to our congregation's list of participants. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity for personal growth and to learn more about Stephen Ministry.

Watch Out!  Watch Out!
The Saints are Coming!

The celebration of Halloween or All Hallows Eve is linked with the fact that on the next day All Hallows or All Saints Day, November 1, we commemorate  with joy the saints, men and women, who have gone to Heaven and are now rejoicing with  God forever!  Many think that  the ghosts and souls theme of Halloween is very appropriate for the eve of All Saints Day - Satan is angry thinking about all of those saints who slipped through his clutches.

With that in mind let us prepare for Sunday, October 28 for the Men's Group famous Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast and Family Pumpkin Night that helps launch this season of rejoicing with the saints and party on.

The Men's Group Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast will begin at 8:30am with delicious Pumpkin Pancakes and other goodies. Then after the 9:00 service we are inviting everyone to wear their costumes for the Trinity Costume parade in the Great Hall.

2011 Pumpkin NightFamily Pumpkin Night is at 5:00pm that evening. We will eat a soup supper with pumpkin and other delicious soups, then each family will carve a pumpkin and then we will process into the Cathedral for our service with our pumpkins. Dean Baker will share with us more about all Hallows Eve and All Saints Day. Be sure to wear your costumes for Pumpkin night as well.  Individuals $5.00 and Families $12.00.  Sign up at the Welcome Center on the clip board with the pumpkin.

So get your costume ready and save the date so you will be ready for the Halloween and All Saints celebration!

Weekly Recipe: Eggplant, Tomato, and Cheese Casserole

Ingredients:

Olive oil cooking spray
2 medium eggplants, washed, ends cut off (do not peel)
2 tsp. dried oregano
1 (16-oz.) jar reduced sodium chunky marinara sauce
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh basil, divided
2 cups cooked spinach
3/4 cup shredded Fontina cheese (Gouda, Gruyere, or Monterey Jack may be substituted)
Black pepper and salt (optional)
2 Tbsp. freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Bring large pot of water to boil. Spray 7 x 11 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.

Slice eggplant lengthwise in very thin slices, about 1/4 inch each.
Add to boiling water with a quick stir.
Eggplant slices will float to top; push down into water.
Cook for about 2 minutes from when it starts to boil again.
Drain and set aside.

Mix oregano into marinara sauce and spoon 1/4 cup sauce onto bottom of baking dish.
Place a layer of eggplant slices, as you would pasta, on bottom of dish.
Cover eggplant layer with more tomato sauce, some basil, a layer of spinach, and then sprinkle some Fontina cheese on top.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper if desired.
Continue to layer eggplant, sauce, basil, spinach and cheese until you reach almost the top of baking dish.
The last layer should finish with both Fontina and Parmesan cheese.

Cover baking dish with parchment paper and then aluminum foil and bake for about 35-40 minutes.
Test with knife for doneness.
If knife can be inserted with no resistance, uncover, and bake for additional 15 minutes until top is golden and bubbly.
Remove from oven.
Let rest for 10 minutes and garnish with remaining basil.
