Thursday Lunch Bunch
with Canon Walker and The Way
Thursday, October 4 and 11 at noon in the Assembly Area
Canon Lynell Walker will introduce the film, The Way, that we'll be viewing on those two Thursdays. The film follows a grieving father, played by Martin Sheen, as he walks the ancient Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) with other pilgrims, all on their own spiritual journeys. The Way invites viewers to consider that "Life is too big to walk it alone." To learn more about the film follow this link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441912/
Canon Lynell was so inspired by this film that she has set a goal to walk The Way during her summer sabbatical in 2013.
Come eat the lunch you bring as we enjoy a good film and good discussion. For more information Contact: Rev. Anne McKeever |

CREDO Walk and Be Well Program
From the CREDO website: Jesus spent much of his ministry walking. From town to town across Galilee, Samaria and Judea, he walked and talked, in the company of his disciples, his followers and God. CREDO's Walk and Be Well offers a way to follow Jesus both in words and action, with a walking program attuned to both body and soul. The Walk and Be Well reflections in both text and audio are brief guideposts to help you begin your daily walk with one of three CREDO writers: Jackie Cameron, Elizabeth Moosbrugger or Bill Watson. Reflections can be downloaded as podcasts, streamed from the CREDO website and printed as pdfs; use them while walking solely or share them with your walking partner or group. And if you would like to receive your daily reflection by email, just sign up and we will send it to you in the early morning. Walk and Be Well begins on September 30, with an introduction from Jackie Cameron. October 1 begins the walking days, which continue through October 28. The distance and pace is up to you. Walk and Be Well is your opportunity to join other CREDO participants, whether they're in your area or they live far away, in committing to four weeks of walking as a benefit to your physical and spiritual health and well-being. Interested in joining our Trinity Walk and Be Well program? Beginning September 30th, we'll read on our own the online introduction, and then, from October 1 through 28th, we'll commit to read every day the online CREDO Walk and Be Well reflection. Our goal will be to move every day by walking, running, cycling or swimming as we think and pray about the Walk and Be Well daily reflection. No need to set goals of distance or time. Please contact Rev. Anne at amckeever@wavecable.com if you're interested in joining our Trinity Walk and Be Well Team. We'll meet at first via e-mail to pray for and encourage each other. Some participants may wish to find Trinity walking buddies. We can help with this. Ideally, we'll all meet sometime in October to walk together in the Trinity neighborhood, but you are free to move and ponder in your own neighborhood the month of October. |

The Cathedral Choir during one of its trips to England. |
Choral Evensong
Thursday, October 4 at 6:00pm
One of the most wonderful liturgical and musical traditions in the Anglican Church is the service of Choral Evensong. The Trinity Cathedral Choir has been singing Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) on a regular basis for over twenty years, and has even sung it in England's greatest Cathedrals.
Evening Prayer, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is a service that has deep roots in the worship of the church. It is mainly derived from the monastic offices in the middle ages, but it also has features that go back to the earliest period of the Christian church. The heart of the service is the regular recitation of the Psalms, and the systematic reading from the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. At Trinity Cathedral, the service is presented using the order from the Book of Common Prayer, with its beautiful and ageless prose. As is customary in churches with a choral tradition, the service is adorned with musical settings of the hymns, psalms, canticles, and anthems that come from the greatrepertoire of church music from the Renaissance to the present time.
Our first choral evensong for the season will be on Thursday, October 4th at 6:00 pm. It is the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, and we will hear music by Charles Wood, William Smith of Durham, Gerre Hancock, Herbert Sumsion, and Arthur Baynon. And we'll conclude with the hymn "Make me a servant of your peace" based on St Frances' famous prayer. Please join the Cathedral Choir for this lovely traditional Anglican service! |

Blessing of the Animals and
Pet Food In-Gathering
Sunday, October 7
We will be celebrating St. Francis Day on October 7 with a Blessing of the Animals at 3 p.m.
On October 6 and 7 at all services and the Blessing of the Animals, there will be a pet food in-gathering to help those who need assistance in order to keep their pets. This food will be shared with the City of Sacramento animal shelter on Front Street, which gives out 3000-5000 pounds of pet food per week. The shelter also provides inoculations, neutering, and licenses for animals based upon household income. Please help by donating dry or canned dog or cat food. |

Stephen Ministry Workshop
Saturday, October 20, 9:00am - 1:00pm
At Trinity Cathedral
Want to learn to care for people who are grieving and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way?
This half-day workshop is designed both to enhance participants' caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served.
One reason we're so excited about helping other congregations learn about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began Stephen Ministry in 1977, over 300 laypeople have gone through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality one-to-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a great way to learn more.
Members of Trinity are invited to attend the workshop free of charge. However, it is still important to pre-register no later than October 12th, so that we will have plenty of materials on the day of the workshop. Please contact Susan Wilson at 835-2799 or email her at snbwilson@gmail.com if you would like to be added to our congregation's list of participants. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity for personal growth and to learn more about Stephen Ministry.

Parish Picnic: A Fun Filled Sunday Afternoon
Over 150 Trinity members showed up at Oki Park this past Sunday for the annual picnic. Lots of friends, lots of food, lots of opportunities to talk with members we often don't see because our Sunday morning paths don't cross. There were also lots of games. Thankfully, this reporter avoided the water balloons!

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) - Why There Are Health Concerns
by Diane Craig
In the USA, food safety testing has not been required ahead of marketing. The FDA declared on May 26, 1992 that GMOs were "substantially equivalent" to non-GMO (traditional) foods. Thereafter:
- Seventeen FDA scientists objected to the decision (1).
- Industry assumed responsibility for GMO food safety.
- No scientific protocols to test GMO food safety were established.
- GMO food products automatically became GRAS (generally recognized as safe).
- By 1997, this policy also was applied to newly-created food ingredients, including additives (flavorings, etc.), even food packaging.
The FDA can act on consumer complaints when ingredients are labeled. However, according to Pew Health Group's Project leader Tom Neltner, "Most of these things [newly-created food ingredients] never appear on labels." (2)
In 2010, the General Accounting Office recommended that the FDA audit industry's food safety studies and consider the scientists' conflicts of interest.
On September 19, 2012, the first independent (non-industry) peer-reviewed long-term research study was published (3). Critics charge that its two-year results, which describe "pathological abnormalities," are of doubtful value. This debate comes at a time when reports alleging allergic and other gmo-associated health problems are on the rise. Together, these spotlight the need for more scientific research - studies that are independent, long-term, repeated, use different animal models (most including this one used rats), and have consensus on testing procedures and protocols.
