"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Dear  ,

Brian Baker

I wanted to share with you a video of Julie Sherman's talk last weekend.  I heard such a strong, positive reaction to her words that I wanted to share them with those who weren't at church.  Trinity Cathedral should be a place where people's lives are transformed by the love of Christ.  That transformation can be aided by hearing the story of others.  I hope this helps in your walk with Christ.

Hiking Trinity Hiking Guild

Saturday, September 15, meet at 8:45am at the Cathedral

Hikers,

I have several requests for a close to home, easy elevation, 3-4 mile hike for this coming weekend. So, Discovery Park it is.  Great place to stroll with friends and new aquaintences, and keeps us close to home for those that have plans in the afternoon.  So, meet at the cathedral at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, we will hike in the coolest part of the day and will be back in time for any other activities you may have planned for the afternoon.  Don't forget to bring plenty of water, plus a lunch.  Don't forget, by the time you are thirsty you have already started to dehydrate, so have some water before you come, and drink at a regular pace as we walk.

Hope to see you Saturday.

Morey Lloyd presents

 "A Whale of a Story" (Jonah)

A Reflection on Jonah

from The Legends of the Jews, by Louis Ginzberg

Jonah is in the fish three days --Why so long?

The belly of the whale is as large and spacious as a synagogue. Jonah was comfortable, with a table, chair, and a light, looking through the eyes of the fish viewing the underworld. He was sent into the fish to learn not to rebel against God's mercy, but, in his torment, he found salvation. That is not what he expected to find. What he found was who God is: "a gracious god and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and ready to repent from the evil He intends to do." If God can repent from the evil He intends to do, so can we, just to be more like God and to be more liking God. I love liking God.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Environmental Concerns.

by Diane Craig

GMOs have been in USA food since 1994. By 2009, 88% of USA soy, corn, and cotton were genetically engineered. GMO sugar beets, introduced in 2006, were 59% of the USA crop in 2008, and 95% in 2009 (1).

Most of these GMOs have been engineered to either produce their own pesticide or to withstand high doses of applied pesticide. Glyphosate, an ingredient in Monsanto's RoundUp, has been engineered into most GMO-created seeds until now.

Pesticides kill unwanted plants (herbicides) and/or insects (insecticides), but repeated use can lead to resistance. GMO use has led to the emergence of superweeds, and pesticide-resistant superweeds have led to more pesticide use...an increase of 383 million pounds of herbicides from 1996 to 2008, according to USDA-compiled data (2).

Insecticides sprayed on GMO corn and cotton decreased by 64 million pounds during the same period (2), but insecticides also are applied to GMO seeds. Most GMO seeds for corn, soy and cotton have been coated with neonicotinoid systemic pesticides. Systemic pesticides move into the plant, including into the pollen and nectar. Neonicotinoids have been linked to bees' colony collapse disorder (3).

Other environmental concerns include:

  • GMOs have not raised crop yields significantly [example (4)];
  • GMOs have not remained confined to the fields where they are planted;
  • Other pesticides proposed for GMOs (applications are pending) include 2,4-D which is the major component of Agent Orange (5).
