"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Dear ,
We did it! We raised enough money to purchase the two lots next to us. In fact we exceeded our goal. We have raised $71,000 in cash with another $47,000 in pledges. That gives us money to begin our planning. I am grateful for everybody who contributed. Now we get to dream about what we will build on that land. I am expecting that we will design a multi-floor, multi-use building. Perhaps a design with four or so floors of program space with two or so floors of housing. It is likely that we can't afford to build the entire building now, but we could at least build the first floor. We could easily fill one floor with the program needs of the Cathedral. Imagine if we had ample meeting, music and classroom space. I know I would like the possibility of having Dean's forums without displacing the choir. I wonder what possibilities may be out there for other uses in this building. I wonder in what ways we may be able to bless our neighborhood with the services or activities we could provide in this space.
The immediate next step is to purchase the land. We expect to have the transaction completed in the next couple of months. Then we need to work on the necessary approvals from the city. I imagine we will seek approval for a six-story structure. While seeking approval, we can begin exploring what we might be able to build in the next few years. While there are a great many variables to consider, I imagine that the approval/design will take at least a year, followed by a capital campaign, then construction.
Having been through this process before -- I was rector when we built St. Thomas Church in Sun Valley, Idaho -- I know these projects can take a long time and seem daunting. But if you take them one step at a time you can end up with a beautiful building that can serve people for generations.
I am grateful for your companionship on this journey. I hope you share my excitement about how we can enhance the ministry of Trinity Cathedral and bless people for years to come.

 Weekly Reflection
Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:
John 7: 1-13
There are several instances in which Jesus was asked to do something, and he initially said "No" because it was not yet his time. But then he does it anyway! Today's passage from John 7 is an example, as is the wedding feast at Cana from John 2. Click to read more... |

TONIGHT: August 30 - John Bell
Presented by Randy Knutson, MDiv
John L. Bell is a musician, minister, collector of world song and a compelling speaker. In many of his writings he is not one to shy away from the challenges provided by biblical stories. Likewise he proves startlingly adept at articulating the often uncomfortable questions the Bible poses for contemporary life. His reflections cover a range of life issues and situations: from patience and love to transiguration and death. We will sing some of his simple music, some world music and discover more about him through video. We will also explore the humor in his work. |

Trinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, September 1
Meet at the Cathedral at 8:45am
I know it has been a while, and I hope that interest has not completely flagged, but I know that for many reasons I needed the summer off [including the fact that the heat on most weekends has been prohibitive.] So, to get back into the swing of things, thought we would go to the Independence Trail just outside of Nevada City. Is an easy 2-3 mile hike, and, although the water will be low, it is a beautiful hike nonetheless. Also, we usualy end up eating in Nevada City at a great Mexican Restaurant, followed by locally made Gelato. [The Gelato is worth the hike in and of itself]
So, if you would like to dust of your hiking shoes and get outdoors, we will meet at the cathedral at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 sharp departure. Should be back at the cathedral no later than 3 p.m. Hope to see you there!

The Cathedral Library is open this Sunday. Also visit us next Sunday, September 9th. Please say hi to library volunteers Kristy Doran, Phyllis Ehlert, or Ben Thomas. And do remember we have books for children. |

Connor Nelson poses in the garden of the Governor's Mansion with his parents, Brian and Cindy Nelson. |
From the Sacramento Bee's Applause column in the August 27, 2012 Our Region section:
"Kudos to: Connor Nelson, Eagle Scout
Accomplishment: With the help of others, the Scout built and delivered picnic benches and a table to the Governor's Mansion.
Details: The outdoor furniture helps the mansion's staff historically interpret the pool area during the administration of Edmund G. (Pat) Brown when his family enjoyed a picnic on the mansion grounds. Visitors will have the opportunity to use 16-year-old Nelson's recreated benches and table."
Your Trinity Family is proud of you, Connor! |
