"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Dear  ,  Jerry Pare

"Jerry, will you do the 'lead' for the E-News this week?" asked Pat Underwood, our editor.   That's why you are now reading these words and why I also wrote a lead several weeks ago. Since writing the reflection on the many "volunteers" at Trinity in that last column, I have come to a realization that I spoke incorrectly. WE DO NOT HAVE VOLUNTEERS AT TRINITY; WE HAVE MANY MINISTERS!   Last weekend I attended a workshop on "Total Ministry." The Diocese of Northern California has a number of parishes designated as "total ministry" congregations and others who are moving in that direction. Most of these are small or medium sized parishes (25 - 100 members). Because of their size the congregations cannot afford to have the services of a full time clergy. Parishioners assume many of the ministerial responsibilities of the community. (See www.norcalepiscopal.org/total-ministry for more information on this parish structure.)

Sort of sounds like us, right? We are blessed not only with full and part time clergy but also with a deacon and two very dedicated retired priests. But the laity still assume many of the ministries that sustain us and that we extend to others. We have a larger ratio of laity to priest than many of the smaller congregations and recognize that "The Reverend" cannot do it all. "Who are the ministers of the Church?" our catechism asks us. "The ministers of the Church are the lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons" is the answer (Book of Common Prayer, p. 855). Note that those of us without the collars are listed first in that order. This is as it should be because of our ordination through Baptism. I invite you to open a Prayer Book to "The Baptismal Covenant" (pp 304-305). We commit ourselves to proclaiming the Word; to seek and serve Christ in all persons; to strive for justice and peace among all people. This sounds like ministerial work to me. Martin Luther reminded the Church that through Baptism, we participate in the priesthood of all believers. Now each of us just needs to discern where God is calling us in the vast array of ministries that exist.

In Total Ministry congregations, members help each other with this discernment. And members often respond in surprise, "Who me?" I often hear that same response when I ask one or another member of Trinity to help in a particular way. When you next hear God's gentle voice calling you (not mine; it isn't so gentle), listen, respond and be ready to be taken on a wild but joyous ride.

Oh yes, you many ministers at Trinity, I apologize for calling you "volunteers."

Reflections Weekly Reflection

Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:

What God has made clean, you must not call profane. (Acts 10:15)

This is the well-known story in which the hungry Peter has a dream where something like a large sheet descends from heaven full of things to eat, but which had been forbidden by the Torah.  He is commanded by a voice to kill and eat, but protests that he has never eaten anything profane or unclean.  Click to read more...

Benjamin BrittenTONIGHT - August 23

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)

Presented by Canon David Link

Benjamin Britten, born on St Ceclia's Day 1913, was one of the most highly original and important English composers of the twentieth century. He contributed to every genre of music including opera, symphonic works, chamber music, and instrumental music.  His contribution to choral music was very significant...from short motets and carols, to cantatas such as "Rejoice in the Lamb," and finally his arresting and controversial "War Requiem."  We will explore his music for the church, and his influence on western music as a whole.

Please join me in the Cathedral for an evening of great music!

John Bell August 30 - John Bell

Presented by Randy Knutson, MDiv

John L. Bell is a musician, minister, collector of world song and a compelling speaker.  In many of his writings he is not one to shy away from the challenges provided by biblical stories.  Likewise he proves startlingly adept at articulating the often uncomfortable questions the Bible poses for contemporary life.  His reflections cover a range of life issues and situations: from patience and love to transiguration and death.  We will sing some of his simple music, some world music and discover more about him through video.  We will also explore the humor in his work.

The Cathedral Choir
returns from summer break.

Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral Choir rehearses at
Peterborough Cathedral, England

Do you love to sing??  Do you love great music??  Are you looking for a way to be part of something wonderful??  Then the Cathedral Choir would like for YOU to join us!   The Cathedral Choir is a mixed-voice choir of volunteers and is open to singers of High School age and older. The choir emphasizes a high standard of singing within the classic Anglican tradition, and the choir's repertoire encompasses a large variety of music from Renaissance, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. The Cathedral Choir rehearses in the Cathedral each Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm, and sings for the 11:15 am Sunday Eucharist, as well as Choral Evensong at 6:00 pm on the first Thursday of most months. The Cathedral Choir has made five tours of England, acting as "choir-in-residence" at Winchester, Salisbury, Canterbury, York Minster Cathedrals, and Westminster Abbey, among others. We hope to begin planning for another tour soon!

After three months of our informal "Summer Choir," the full Cathedral Choir will resume regular rehearsals on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:30 pm.

The choir's mantra is... "make music, work hard, have fun," and we'd like for YOU to join the fun! A personal interview and simple audition is desired of new members, and may be scheduled by contacting David Link, Canon for Music, at link@trinitycathedral.org or 916.446-2513, xt 24.

Genetically Modified Food

Since the question of labeling genetically modified food will be on the ballot as Prop. 37 in November, it is important to educate ourselves on this controversial and complex issue. For starters, see the movie listed below.

What are genetically modified organisms (GMOs)? They aren't hybrids. They aren't mutations. Rather, GMOs are the by-products formed when genes from one species are inserted into the DNA of another species. Because cells normally reject foreign DNA, fragments from bacteria and viruses also are required.

The theory was that one gene would encode only one unique protein and create only one desired and specific outcome. We now know that genes create multiple proteins, and at least one study has demonstrated that rats fed a conventional plant plus a safe pesticide remained healthy, while rats fed a genetically modified organism formed from the same plant and pesticide developed immune system problems (abstract at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10533866).

For those interested in GMOs, the film Genetic Roulette will screen at the Crest Theater on Tuesday, August 28 at 5:30 and 8:30 pm. Tickets are $10 regular, $7 senior and students. More information is at http://thecrest.com/calendar/expand.cfm?EventID=4011

Canon Carey's Corner Addition

Groundbreaking Documentary on Transgender People of Faith

Voices of Witness: Out of the Box is a ground breakingOut of the Box documentary giving voice to the witness of transgender people of faith. Courageously inviting the viewer into their journeys, the film is ultimately a celebration of hope and the power of God's love to transcend even seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Produced by Integrity's Communication Director Louise Brooks, the film is being offered by Integrity USA as a gift to the Episcopal Church, as a resource for both teaching and transformation. A copy was provided to all Deputies at General Convention 2012. The information in this documentary helped in the passage of two key resolutions, D002 and D019, which added "gender identity and expression" to the list of categories protected from discrimination in the church, including access to the discernment process for ordination and also more generally to the life, worship and governance of the church.
