"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

|
Greetings!
Our Vestry is currently trying to figure out how many of us volunteer - both for Trinity and elsewhere-- and in what areas we do so. They want to use this information as part of a parish profile they are compiling for us as well as for visitors.
GOOD LUCK!
Whenever I reflect on how much our life at Trinity is sustained by you and your ways of giving to the community, I am overwhelmed. We often think of "giving" as involving the amount of our income we pledge to Trinity. That is an important part. But equally important is the time and talent that many members share so that we have a healthy, viable life as a Christian community. Let us count the ways (or least try a partial tally):
Music and Worship - we have acolytes, vergers, choir members, ushers, greeters, bread bakers, readers, Eucharistic Ministers, Eucharistic Visitors, transept ministers, altar guild members, the flower committee, Choristers...and I know I have overlooked some.
Spiritual Formation - we have teachers at all levels from kindergarten through adult, catechumenate leaders, class room aides, behind the scenes prep people, librarians, chapel ministers, nursery caregivers, Bookshop volunteers, EfM...and I know I have overlooked some.
Out Reach (much of this is by you who work off campus at the organizations) - Family Promise, Thursday evening community dinners, River City Food Bank, Francis House, Loaves and Fishes, SafeGround, hosting 12 step programs, feeding those who come to dinners and on Sunday morning...and I know I have overlooked some.
Prayer, Care & Pastoral Health - Stephen Ministers, Healing Ministers, chaplains, shawl ministers, Centering Prayer leaders, Labyrinth...and I know I have overlooked some.
Hospitality - Sunday morning hosts, special events workers, cooks, event set up , wedding hosts, funeral reception hosts, those managing the Welcome Center, linen washers .. and, yes, I have overlooked some.
Then there are all of those "administrative" volunteers - vestry members, convention delegates, the ministry teams, my beloved office volunteers, the "money counters," those who help maintain the grounds,...yes, I've overlooked some here and will hear about it tomorrow!
We are the life of Trinity! As we share our time, our talents, our skills, our interests with each other, we are the body of Christ (I Cor 12)! Good luck, Vestry, in gathering the details!

Back Packs for Jed Smith
Our BACK SNACK PROGRAM begins September 7. We need at least 80 back packs for the beginning of school. We pack the food for the students and their families in these back packs so they should be about 17 inches tall.
The more plain Jane varieties are best, solid dark colors such as black, blue, dark green. You can bring back packs to Nancy Tennyson's office any time in the next month.
We also need tuna, Raman soup, macaroni and cheese, granola bars and oatmeal packets.
Please bring your donations to Nancy Tennyson's office. |

Safe Ground Ministry
I have been serving in the Safe Ground Ministry at Trinity since September of 2011. The story that drives me to serve in the homeless ministries at Trinity is the night we served sandwiches and everyone had left but four guests. A senior citizen couple from the church came into the Great Hall and sat down. Without hesitation, three of the guests reached in their bags, pulled out their sandwiches and offered them to the couple. They gave all they had out of their nothingness. We give out of our abundance, but they gave it all because they thought someone else was hungry.
We have a fabulous group of volunteers from Trinity and the community who serve in the Safe Ground ministry on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. We would like to expand the number of volunteers we have. If you are interested in serving in this ministry, or if you have questions, please contact Cheri Meadows at cnrmeadows@yahoo.com or (916) 601-6441.

Trinity has been asked if we would like to field a team for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k walk on October 21, a fund raising effort of the American Cancer Society; follow this link for more information.
If you are willing to be the point person for this team, a kickoff breakfast on August 23 would give you all the information you need to get started.
Contact Deacon Virginia - 446-2513 or virginiamcneely@msn.com for more information. |
Do you travel?
Have toiletries?
Many of us travel for pleasure or work and bring home from hotels the little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion as well as bars of soap. These small items are of great help to the homeless and the poor. Please bring your donations of toiletries to Trinity and leave them in the marked basket in the Narthex.

 Weekly Reflection
Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:
. . . and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, 'Look, here is the Lamb of God!' (John 1:36)
"The lamb of God" (John 1:36) is not a scapegoat. Although accused, Jesus is not a victim. Jesus went up to Jerusalem - on his own accord - no one could stop him, no one could turn him away. Click to read more... |
A Guide to the Windows of Trinity Cathedral
Have you ever spent time looking and enjoying the beautiful windows and other works of art in our Cathedral?
I have prepared a booklet that tells about each of the windows as well as other works of art including the mosaics and the Cathedral Cross.
Originally stained glass windows were tools for educating people, most of who could neither read nor write. Today, while they continue to tell their stories, they stand apart as examples of craftsmanship.
This inexpensive booklet, now available in The Cathedral Bookshop, will add much to our understanding and enjoyment of The Windows of Trinity Cathedral and other works of art.

Tonight - August 9 - Bishop Duncan Gray, Jr.
7th Bishop of Mississippi: A Study of Church in Tumult
Presented by Jerry Pare'
Bishop Gray was a rector in Oxford, Mississippi, who ministered in the midst of the civil rights movement, in the eye of the storm. Bishop Gray's stance on racism challenged many in the parish when he was a rector and in the diocese when he was bishop. What lessons can we learn in terms of how we deal with the controversial issues in our parish and wider church today?

August 16 - Jesus Christ
Presented by Dean Brian Baker
Jesus changed world history. You could say that Jesus changed the world. But how? What did Jesus accomplish? What was his central message? People have often believed that Jesus saves us. But how? From what? For what? This Voices of Faith will look at various answers to these questions.
August 23 - Benjamin Britten
Presented by Canon David Link
Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was one of the most original and important English composers of the twentieth century. His contribution to choral music is very significant...from short motets and carols, to his arresting and controversial "War Requiem." We'll explore his music and contribution to the repertoire of sacred music.

Eat Outside and Deter Mosquitoes and Ants
Here's an easy home remedy for mosquitoes and ants.
Mosquitoes: Fill a 4 oz spray bottle with original, medicinal Listerine (can be Dollar Store version too) and spray deck and grass area around where you are sitting. This will deter the critters. This works around playgrounds and picnic areas too. Take your little spray bottle with you-no need for Deet and other nasty repellants. You can even rub some on your skin: the thyme in Listerine repels mosquitoes.
Ants: The mint-flavored mouthwash works on ants. |

MONASTIC INTERNSHIPS
or
Calling All Violet Seekers!
Having jumped through all the hoops required by our society, millions are on the road to success, which is mostly defined in terms of wealth, power, privilege, prestige. But there are also those who wish to define a successful life in other terms, which include a contemplative awareness of the world around them and within them. We have friends who are doctors, nurses, carpenters, lawyers, teachers, mechanics, bankers, social workers, farmers, musicians, etc. But they also protect and nourish a mindfulness of nature, spiritual growth and peace, and the possibilities of transcendence as a normal part of life.
The poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) put this venture in simpler terms. He spoke not of hoops but of striving to climb the mountain. And when he was successful and got to the summit he wrote this poem.
On the mountain path
what is this special thing?
A simple violet.
After talking to a number of violet seekers, we have come up with a mutually beneficial idea: a monastic internship.
THE BASIC CONCEPT: an appropriate person comes to Starcross Monastic Community and participates in our simple (though sometimes chaotic) life for 3 months. She/he would work with us for about 5 hours a day 5 days a week in multiple tasks. The intern would set and reset his/her own level of solitude, join us for our Sunday Ecumenical Service, and other daily times of common prayer if desired. She/he would have an individual room and bathroom. Food would be provided but ordinarily she/he would cook and eat on the intern's own schedule. Click to read more... |

Groundbreaking Documentary on Transgender People of Faith
"Voices of Witness: Out of the Box" is a ground breaking documentary giving voice to the witness of transgender people of faith. Courageously inviting the viewer into their journeys, the film is ultimately a celebration of hope and the power of God's love to transcend even seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Produced by Integrity's Communication Director Louise Brooks, the film is being offered by Integrity USA as a gift to the Episcopal Church, as a resource for both teaching and transformation. A copy was provided to all Deputies at General Convention 2012. The information in this documentary helped in the passage of two key resolutions, Resolutions D002 and D019, which added "gender identity and expression" to the list of categories protected from discrimination in the church, including access to the discernment process for ordination and also more generally to the life, worship and governance of the church. Click here to read more and to view the film.

Presiding Bishop's Message to the Church on General Convention The Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs
August 3, 2012
"We emerge with abundant hope, better discipline for working together and with partners beyond this Church, for our fundamental reason for being - engagement with God's mission," Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori states in her message to the church about the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, held in July in Indianapolis, IN.
