"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Greetings!
This past Saturday the vestry held its mid-year retreat. We hold this retreat each year so we can review our goals for the year and our progress. As you could imagine, we discussed a wide range of topics including the exciting opportunity we have in purchasing the lots next door.
One of the items we discussed was our recently completed listening campaign and the interest in our ministries to the homeless. We talked about a recent report from the United Nations that singled out Sacramento for its lack of public bathrooms and clean water. For people who do not have homes, this is a crisis. This crisis will not be solved by Trinity Cathedral, but we can do two important things. First, we can offer our bathrooms and our water. Imagine how hard it is to live on the street if you don't have a place where you can go to the bathroom. There are people who are forced to go to the bathroom behind bushes, not only at Trinity Cathedral but all over the city. While there is a lot we cannot offer people in need, we can at least offer them a bathroom.
Second, and just as important, we can band together with other churches and community groups as well as with political leaders to ask the city to provide these critical services. We are the capital of the great state of California. We treat our neediest citizens worse than some developing countries. It really is shameful for us to catch the attention of the U.N. as a violator of human rights. There is a group of people at Trinity that will be working to find city-wide solutions to these problems. If you would like to be involved, please let me know.
I and the vestry are very aware that our ministries to the homeless put strains on our facility and our ministries. We are trying to strike an appropriate balance between being faithful disciples of Jesus in loving all people and being good stewards of our facility and ministries. We are starting to meet with leaders in other churches in our area to learn from them. We hope to have some Sunday forums in the near future to talk about what we are learning and how we intend to move forward.
Blessings,
Brian

 Weekly Reflection
Trinity Cathedral parishioners are writing weekly reflections during the Season after Pentecost. These reflections remind us that stewardship involves more than our financial contributions. Stewardship is also about discovering our own calling to reflect the image of God into the world in which we find ourselves. This week's reflection:
Remember your word to your servant, because you have given me hope. (Psalm 119: 49)
As if the Lord needs reminding that He promised us hope, salvation, and comfort! Broken humans require daily reminders. Sometimes minute by minute, we must renew our faith when we are struggling through problems that seem too big for us, or when our lives are too small. Click to read more... |

LOC becomes Trinity ACT
After years of confusion about what our LOC [Local Organizing Committee] is about the group has decided to change its name to Trinity ACT (T-ACT). T-ACT is Trinity's parish group working with Sacramento ACT[ Area Congregations Together] on issues important to the welfare of our community: education, public safety, violence prevention and homelessness among others. Our recent Listening Campaign revealed that people who are homeless are of concern to our parishioners and that our ongoing ministry of feeding homeless people enjoys great support. Members of T-ACT are planning research meetings with public officials and homeless advocates to see what can be done to alleviate the lack of services (such as Mental Health), shelters, and affordable housing in Sacramento. If you want to join in these efforts please contact:
Or come to one of our monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday at 7pm. TRC Tina Campbell, Deacon

August 9 - Bishop Duncan Gray, Jr.
7th Bishop of Mississippi: A Study of Church in Tumult
Presented by Jerry Pare'
Bishop Gray was a rector in Oxford, Mississippi, who ministered in the midst of the civil rights movement, in the eye of the storm. Bishop Gray's stance on racism challenged many in the parish when he was a rector and in the diocese when he was bishop. What lessons can we learn in terms of how we deal with the controversial issues in our parish and wider church today?

From the Health Ministry...
Simple Leafy Green Sauté Ingredients: 1-2 cloves of garlic 1/2 medium onion chopped 1/2 lb. leafy greens (kale, chard, or collard greens) 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper Salt to taste Directions: Chop the garlic and onions, and then set aside - research shows that allowing garlic to stand for 10-15 minutes before cooking can help retain its health-beneficial enzymes. With a knife, remove and discard very tough or damaged end portions of the greens - keep the majority of the stems attached. "Core" the center portion of the greens, then chop the leaf cores and stems into bite sized pieces and set aside. Roll the leaves into a tube shape, about 3 at a time, and cut lengthwise to create thin 1" ribbons. Heat the oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the onion, garlic, black pepper, and green stems and cores. Heat, covered, for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions are translucent. Add the leaves and cook, covered, another 3-5 minutes until stems are tender and leaves are wilted and brightly colored. Add a tablespoon of water to the pan if it seems like the leaves are getting too dry. Add salt to taste. Nutritional Values per 1 cup serving (serves 4): Calories: 65 Fat: 4 gm total Saturated Fat: <1 g Carbohydrate: 7 gm Fiber: 1.5 gm Protein: 2gm Sodium: 25 mg |
Do You Hear What I Hear? A Call for Authors
Often it is the most inspirational stories of faith journey among Episcopalians that require the greatest of digging to unearth. Unspoken, these stories are like buried treasures that, when shared, prove the most compelling examples of God's great work. In considering the next issue of our diocesan print magazine, "Together in Mission," the Communications Commission would like to feature some of the inspiring stories and reflections of faith of our fellow Episcopalians throughout Northern California.
