"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Brian Baker

When you receive this, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church will be drawing to a close.  It has been important and eventful.  Personally, it has been invigorating and exhausting.  I have been impressed with the collegiality and positive energy in the church.  I feel like we are turning a corner and are leaving behind much of the divisiveness that has plagued us in the past.  I am leaving Indianapolis excited about our future as a church.

I'm sorry my schedule did not allow me to write about our progress during the Convention.  I hope to blog about my impressions in the next few days.  I will mention a few highlights now.  We adopted a rite for blessing same-sex couples.  We passed a resolution launching an intensive and comprehensive study of marriage. I was on the committee that handled these resolutions and will be providing detail about them soon.

There was also a great deal of energy around restructuring the church.  It is clear that the top-heavy structure of the Episcopal Church needs to change.  We called for a diverse task force to develop a plan that we can consider at the next Convention.  This resolution was one of the few that passed unanimously.  We also passed a resolution asking the headquarters of the Episcopal Church to move away from New York City, moving it to a less expensive, more centralized location.  We also chose to not to affirm the Anglican Covenant, which is, in my view, an effort to create a more centralized structure in the Anglican Communion.

As I head back to Sacramento with renewed excitement about the Episcopal Church, I am heading toward an exciting opportunity for Trinity Cathedral.  In the next few weeks, we will be raising funds that will allow us to purchase two lots right next to the Cathedral.  It is my hope that we design a multi-story building for that site and we build the first floor in the next few years.  Imagine the impact we could have on our community if we not only had all the space we needed for our current activities, but we had the space for not-yet-imagined ministries.

I look forward to seeing you in Sacramento.

Blessings,

Brian

Family Promise

Family Promise Week

August 12-19

The theme for the season of Pentecost is "Come Alive with the Holy Spirit"!! It is exciting that Trinity will be hosting Family Promise week during this joyful time - August 12-19. I invite you to come and be a part of reviving/comforting the spirits of our families, and my guess is that your spirits will be revived and thriving in the process!!

As the coordinator for our Family Promise ministry I was delighted that so many of you stepped forward to help make our last hostessing week a wonderful success. There were many new faces added to our group of dedicated volunteers. That's what it is all about - being in community with one another, laughing, sharing meals and companionship with our Family Promise families. Come and share some time with us. I promise you will not be disappointed. The sign-up sheet is in the hallway outside of the bookshop.

I am available for any and all questions you might have about how you can help make a contribution.

Blessings,

Making Strides

Trinity has been asked if we would like to field a team for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k walk on October 21, a fund raising effort of the American Cancer Society; follow this link for more information.

If you are willing to be the point person for this team, a kickoff breakfast on August 23 would give you all the information you need to get started.

Contact Deacon Virginia - 446-2513 or

virginiamcneely@msn.com  for more information.

Do you travel? Have toiletries?

Many of us travel for pleasure or work and bring home from hotels the little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion as well as bars of soap. These small items are of great help to the homeless and the poor.   Please bring your donations of toiletries to Trinity and leave them in the marked basket in the Narthex. Carol Savoie will deliver them to St. Matthew's for their health ministry, which is desperate for them. In the future, if donations are generous, we will share toiletries with River City Food Bank and Loaves and Fishes.

July 19 - Martin Luther: His Music, His Life

Presented by Loren Weatherly Martin Luther

In addition to being a theologian, a reformer, and an author, Martin Luther was an artist, a musician, and a composer. He wrote songs that for hundreds of years have been sung by worshippers in their congregations. Composers have used his melodies in countless ways. He said, "I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God." Come and hear his words on music, and hear some of his music!

Of Interest

Trinity Cathedral has a NEW ON-LINE

 Inter-Active CALENDAR!

If you go to http://trinitycathedral.mhsoftware.com, you can view the new Trinity calendar in it's "monthly" format. Play with the "Select View," and you will be able to choose to see a year, a month, a week or a day at a time. Click on the box that says "Main Calendar" and you will be able to change to a select calendar for each of our areas of ministry (Worship, Youth and Family, Serve, etc). If you click on a specific event ("drill down" as some of our techie friends say), you can find out the where's, when's, whose and what's of a specific event.

Linda Aston
Linda Aston headed the project for a new calendar.

Linda Aston did most of the work in researching a calendar that will meet our needs, in leading the testing and in orienting the calendar administrators and Cathedral staff. "We were interested in getting something a little more interactive; a little more informative for both members checking up on specific activities, as well as for web browsing seekers, those looking for a new worship home," Linda commented when asked about the search criteria for this calendar.

Linda offers these further words of advice and encouragement:

"As with all new computer applications, this one will take some getting used to. I encourage you to go to the web site, click around, and see what is there.  Please take a look at it, and I assure you, you will be impressed by the volume of opportunities to worship, care, serve, learn and connect with others at Trinity Cathedral."

THANK YOU, Linda, for this fantastic contribution to keeping us a little bit more organized!

You can still submit event requests as before. Contact Dana Chamness (dlchamness@gmail.com; 916-446-2513). And we will still have a weekly calendar posted in the Solarium bulletin board. Our hope is that this new, interactive calendar will improve our communications and ministry here at Trinity.

TREE LogoTREE Tip

by Ann Rothschild

Resources and Activism.

TREE's Second Harvest table is back in the Great Hall during coffee hours. Thank you for bringing in excess garden produce and sharing with those in need.

Good people doing good things-recycling unused medical supplies.

A Bay Area organization, started 14 years ago by one person in a donated warehouse space, has grown to an efficient organization, MedShare, that collects surplus medical supplies and equipment from U.S. hospitals-supplies ordinarily discarded by law-and delivers them to underserved people in the U.S. and abroad. They also maintain a database to ensure supplies are not wasted. Apparently, U.S. hospitals generate more than 2 million tons of medical waste per year, including unused medical supplies, and globally, over 10 million children under five years old die due to inadequate medical care. Thank you MedShare. (Source: www.medshare.org and www.GeoEx.com)

Another organization, Project C.U.R.E, http://projectcure.org, will take individual donations. For people with chronic diseases, excess medications can add up, and flushing meds down the toilet pollutes our water systems-an Associated Press study found the drinking water of 41 million Americans tainted with pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers, and sex hormones. Other organizations are Globus Relief, and Operation USA.

To discard used pills, remove from containers and mix with undesirable trash (like coffee grounds or kitty litter), so no-one else can use them. Take name, address, and prescription number off the container before recycling. (CFRI Newsletter, Summer 2012).

Strawberries and Methyl Iodide - activism success!   In March, Arysta LifeScience Inc, the Japanese chemical company "suspended sales and production of all formulation of the fumigant, Midas, or methyl iodide, in the U.S." Although approved by California regulators in 2010, Midas is no longer registered in California. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/21/midas-strawberry-pesticide-methyl-iodide_n_1370789.html) Consumer knowledge and activism works.

Beware www.poopbags.ca.   Notice the familiar name-used by an egregious entrepreneur in Canada who copied the name and slogans of our own original www.poopbags.com and who gets his bags made in China. Our company here supports American made poopbags, so please continue to go to the .com site and boycott the other. Tell your friends.

Summer Choirs at Trinity

Summer Choir

Have you ever wanted to give one of the Cathedral Choirs a try?? But not sure about the time commitment?? Then summertime is just for you! During the summer months the Celebration Choir and Cathedral Choir continues to sing for Sunday services, but there are no week night rehearsals. A short rehearsal on Sunday morning prepares us for the service following.

The Summer Celebration Choir practices at 8:20 am in the Assembly Area, and sings for the 9:00 Eucharist.

The Summer Cathedral Choir practices at 10:40 am in the Cathedral, and sings for the 11:15 service.

No audition is required for either group, and you can participate on Sundays as you are available. And who knows... maybe the experience will encourage you to join one of our choirs full time! So come and join us... you are assured of a "warm" welcome and great music.
