A Summer's Reflection

Pat and I have just returned from a wonderful trip touring parts of the Oregon coast. The change inRembrandt climate, pace and exposure to the stunning cliffs and seacoast provided a wonderful time of rest and refreshment. It doesn't take much to reset my life. While away, I reread Henri Nouwen's book The Return of the Prodigal Son.  It's based on his meditations of Rembrandt's depiction of the familiar gospel parable found in Luke 15:11-32. Nouwen had been invited by friends to join them on a trip to the Soviet Union to see the original portrait located at a Hermitage in St. Petersburg and he seized the opportunity with great joy. He had encountered the image in a poster some time before and it had haunted his heart and imagination. Now he would get a chance to experience the painting as the artist had expressed it.

While camping, I downloaded the Rembrandt sketches and final portrait to my phone and went back and forth between Nouwen's interpretation of the story and the paintings that had so moved his heart. I have read this book twice before and never caught, until this read, that imbedded in the parable resides the invitation to become the father - generous with all that he had, and ever checking the horizon for a glimpse of the son he loved and missed so deeply. I had always seen it as a story of reconciliation but never as an invitation to become the reconciler. I'm grateful for vacant times that give the heart time to ponder.

I hope this summer gives you time to pursue something that once captivated your heart. Take time to remember. Was it a piece of music, a work of art, a place forgotten, an old friend? May you find joy in discovering the many ways that God's Spirit naturally reveals itself during this summer season of re-creation.

Senior Warden's Report

The Vestry meeting on June 19th was thought provoking in that we discussed three topics which will affect our future.

As is our custom, we spent the first 30 minutes of our meeting in prayer and Bible study. Mary Hustler offered the Opening Prayer. It was a beautiful "summer" prayer from her work in the youth ministry. I gave the prayer report which was based on my conversations with many of you. Dean Baker led us in our Bible Study.

I updated the Vestry on the Capital Campaign to acquire the two vacant lots on 27th Street from the Diocese. The acquisition of these two lots along with the adjacent building we own is an important part of our future. More on this in July.

The B Street Theatre executive Director, Bill Blake, shared his plans with us. The B Street Theatre plans to relocate from their current location (26th and B Streets) to the southeast corner of 27th and Capital, directly across the 27th Street from Trinity Cathedral. Annual attendance at their new facility will be about 92,000, many of whom will be in our neighborhood on Saturday evening and late in the morning and in the early afternoon on Sunday. Bill and his team will be working with the City of Sacramento this summer and fall to secure approval to build their facility-let's offer them a great big "Trinity" welcome to the neighborhood. It is exciting to see another part of our neighborhood transformation occurring - the Sutter Hospital expansion and now the B Street Theatre. For more information about the B Street Theatre's plans go to: http://www.bstreettheatre.org/next-stage/

We received a thorough briefing on the result of the Listening Campaign. The work of the Listening Campaign, the summary of which is available online, will enable your Vestry and Cathedral staff to better understand the thoughts of the Congregation. The Vestry heard that one of issues that the Congregation is concerned about is Homelessness. This concern was expressed in two ways:

  1. How does Trinity participate in the broader community wide issue? How can we affect the lives of the homeless in our community? Let's call this the External Issue. The Listening Campaign Committee will work on this issue and return with their thoughts to the Vestry on how to proceed in the future.
  2. What can we do to make the Congregation feel more comfortable with our onsite ministry? Let's call this the Internal Issue. The Vestry and Cathedral staff will work on this issue.

Please thank Sally Smith, Laura Jestes and Loren Weatherly, Sacramento ACT and everyone who participated in the Congregation, both as Listeners and interviewees. This is important work and will affect our future.

Our Future is bright and, while change is sometimes scary and challenging, I am encouraged and strengthened by the commitment of our Congregation to make "disciples who love and serve Christ and his world".

In addition to being a theologian, a reformer, and an author, Martin Luther was an artist, a musician, and a composer. He wrote songs that for hundreds of years have been sung by worshippers in their congregations. Composers have used his melodies in countless ways. He said, "I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God." Come and hear his words on music, and hear some of his music!

ENGAGING THE DIAKONIA OF ALL BELIEVERS

 General Convention 2012, Indianapolis

This week as we meet for our triennial General Convention, deacons in the Episcopal Church will be living out our ministry to "speak to the church about the needs concerns and hopes of the world". We will urge the church to adopt a resolution that will require us to remember our relationship with people living in poverty in an ongoing way.   At our booth, we will invite all who visit us to look at the world through a diaconal lens. Since our last convention, The Association for Episcopal Deacons has taken on a new name and a greater role as leaders in the diaconal ministry of the Episcopal Church.

Resolution B008 "Focusing on Those Living in Poverty" was proposed by Bishop Michael Garrison who is a member of the board of AED and has also been endorsed by the board and staff of the Association for Episcopal Deacons.   It contains a simple and radical proposal: that in the year 2013, all church meetings on the parish, diocesan or national level and for whatever purpose, will begin with a discussion of how what we do here will affect or involve those living in poverty. The purpose of this practice is to bring people living in poverty into our day-to-day life as the church. The exact wording of the resolution in English and Spanish can be found below.

Looking Through a Diaconal Lens is the theme of the AED booth this year.   We can be found under the giant View-Master! For those of you who do not remember what a View-Master is, it is a toy that looks like binoculars with a ring of pictures that can be viewed by clicking a switch. Very low tech. We will have View-Masters available to help us reflect on the world around us, from seeing the people who make our stay in Indianapolis so comfortable by cleaning our hotel rooms, to seeing the violence that makes our cities so dangerous for some of those who live there. Everyone is invited to come visit us, check out our View-Masters, talk with us about what we mean by looking through a diaconal lens and share their thoughts about the diaconal ministry of the church.

Deacons in liturgy - as in previous years, we are writing the prayers of the people, reading the gospel, setting the table and overseeing the distribution of the bread and wine.   We will be visible symbols of the servant ministry of Jesus Christ in the liturgy.

Please follow us on Facebook and Anglo-deacons as we report events from convention as seen through our diaconal lens.   Please pray for the diaconal ministry of the church as we gather to make decisions that impact the lives of all of us and particularly the most vulnerable among us.

Looking for a Home

Paw Print

Hi - my name is Sandy - when you see my coat of fur - you will understand how I got my name. I also have blue eyes - you guessed it! I'm a Siamese mix/lynx point female kitty.   I'm a little shy, but once I warm up to you, you will find a gentle affectionate companion who you will enjoy hanging out with.

Presently I'm in a foster home but am actively looking for my "forever home" with a special person who I can appreciate and love.

I'm three years old, petite, have been spayed and micro-chipped; I've had all my vaccines, and am FELV/FIV negative. I would best fit into a home where there are no other pets and adult only family member(s). If you could find space in your life and heart for me, would you contact Jean Post at 530-735-6585 or cndlncones@netzero.net. I'll be waiting to hear from you.
