TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!
 | | Jerry Paré |
What is it to be an Episcopalian? We recently had a Thursday Evening at the Cathedral class that looked at this topic under the catchy title "Jesus was an Episcopalian." There is a lot of truth in that claim.
A HUGE part of what it is to be an Episcopalian Christian is to live sacramentally. This means to live as much as possible in the realization that we are made in the image of God. It means to live in such a way that others see the Divine through us. That is what made Jesus an Episcopalian.
This may sound like nice theology but it is hard to live out in the day to day world of raising children, getting through the work day, driving in traffic where I am tempted to be anything but sacramental, living in a world where it often seems that no one cares. But a nice part about being Episcopalians is that we have help in our attempts to live sacramentally. These helps are our sacraments. We have been celebrating many of them recently.
Baptism and Confirmation - they constantly remind us that we are called to a covenant with God that binds us as disciples.
Marriage - we celebrated in grand style a couple of weeks ago and re-membered that marriages are sacraments of love and covenant, not only between the couple but for all of us with God and each other.
Holy Orders - in celebrating Virginia McNeely's ordination to the diaconate we celebrated our call to service.
Healing - there is a spiritual power that many feel as prayers are said for them and they are anointed, a power of being made whole again. The healing power that goes forth from this community is amazing!
Reconciliation - we celebrate not only that God is all-forgiving and healing but that we can and do forgive ourselves and those who have offended us.
Eucharist - our celebration every week that includes all of the others: vocation, healing, forgiveness, renewal of our covenant, re-membering, and a recommitment to go forth to love and serve the world and one another.
It is good to be an Episcopalian, to be a member of a faith community that cherishes our formal sacraments, to be with those who recognize and celebrate these sacraments that strengthen us to be sacrament. So, with God's help, let us go forth and continue trying to be Episcopalians!
