"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Dean Baker

This Sunday will be special in two ways.  First, The Rev. Faith Whitmore will be preaching at our 7:30, 9:00 and 11:15 services. Faith was the pastor at St. Mark's United Methodist Church and is now the director of Francis House.  She is an excellent preacher and because she is a dear friend of mine, we get to have her at Trinity periodically.  You can see her sermon from last October here.

Second, at 10:15 we will hear a report from the people who organized the listening campaign.  For the past weeks, members of the congregation have been sitting down with other members of the congregation to learn about people's interests, passions and concerns.  This Sunday is our opportunity to hear about what they learned.  We will be meeting in the Cathedral for that report.

I also want to make sure you know about Virginia McNeely's ordination to the diaconate on Saturday at 11:00 AM and Sandie Neal's memorial service at 7:00 PM on Saturday evening.

Blessings,

Brian

Those CFL bulbs and the mercury issue.

Controversy rages over CFL [Compact Fluorescent Light] light bulbs - scare tactics and anti-green rhetoric is flying. The Environmental Protection Agency website gives the straight-forward scoop:

CFL bulbs contain about 4 milligrams of mercury (compared to 100 milligrams in our old thermometers). Incandescent bulbs contain mercury too. CFL bulbs are more energy efficient than the old light bulbs because they reduce the demand for power, which comes from coal-fired power plants - the source of half of U.S. mercury pollution.

Those coiled CFL bulbs are green, but they do release mercury if dropped and broken. Take all used CFL bulbs to a hazardous disposal site along with used batteries. Sites near Trinity include:

East Sacramento Hardware, 4800 Folsom Blvd.,

Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, 1900 Alhambra Blvd., and

Capitol Ace Hardware, 1815 I St.

See website below for full listing.*

If you break a CFL bulb:

Evacuate the room, taking care not to step on any broken glass.

Ventilate the room for a MINIMUM of 15 minutes, turning off heating or air conditioning, and if possible, keep it off for a couple of hours.

DO NOT clean the debris of a broken lamp with a vacuum cleaner as this will spread toxic mercury droplets throughout the house either immediately or upon the future use of the vacuum.

Don protective gloves; use a brush and sticky tape to gather the debris into a dustpan; empty the contents of the dustpan into a plastic bag; seal the plastic bag.

DO NOT dispose of the plastic bag into an ordinary refuse receptacle.

The debris is lawfully a Hazardous Material and must be disposed of accordingly.
