"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Dean Baker

This Sunday is the feast of Pentecost.  In addition to wearing red, Pentecost pinatas and birthday cake (to celebrate the birthday of Christianity,) we will have our first-ever baptism by immersion.  David Rickert, a long-time member of the church and current Junior Warden, was surprised to learn that he had never been baptized.  Upon learning this, he began to study baptism and plan for his baptism.  In the earliest church, baptisms were all by immersion.  There are many layers of symbolism in baptism, such as resurrection after being buried in a watery grave, passing through the waters of the Red Sea and being washed clean.  These symbolic meanings are more fully represented by the candidates being fully immersed in the water.  Over time, the church moved away from immersion and replaced it with the more practical and less messy practice of pouring water over the candidates head.  There is a movement within liturgical churches (Episcopal, Lutheran, Roman Catholic) to move back to more ancient forms of worship.  It is not uncommon for large immersion fonts to be included in newly constructed churches.  St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Sacramento and St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Davis have lovely immersion fonts.  We will have a temporary font set up in front of the altar.  This will be my first time baptizing someone by full immersion!

David wrote a lovely reflection on his upcoming baptism.  You can read it on our blog.

Also, because this is Jazz weekend, we will have a Jazz mass at the 9am service.

Blessings,

Brian

From the Senior Warden

Kirk Bone, Sr. WardenThe May Vestry meeting was another full meeting. We did adjourn on time-at 8:30 exactly.

My purpose in providing the congregation with this report is to provide you with a feeling and context about our meetings. My February message included our overall goals for the year and we are well on our way to meeting them. They include establishing a Planned Giving program and a wish list to improve our existing facilities. Both of those efforts are proceeding thanks to Katherine Keeney (Planned Giving) and David Rickert (the wish list). David provides an excellent Junior Warden's report at each Vestry meeting. Please thank both of them for their outstanding work and commitment or if you want to participate.

Tom Robbins began our meeting with an opening prayer and a report on his communication with the members of Trinity on his prayer list. Each member of the Vestry is responsible for praying for a portion of the congregation. Please expect call or other contacts from your Vestry member.

We concluded our "quiet time" -usually 6:30 to 7:00- with Bible study. Adriana Echandia, our Chaplain, lead us in the study. This is important time for us.

Laura Jestes, Susan Van Dyke and Pat Hill provided us with an update on a year-round stewardship program they are leading. They are planning a series of reflections and testimonials that remind us of the benefits of gratitude and generosity. If you are interested in participating, please let them know.

Sally Smith is leading the "Listening Campaign" with assistance/facilitation from Sacramento ACT. They hope to interview at least 70 members by the end of May. I encourage you to participate. They plan on reporting their results to the Congregation in June. If you want to be interviewed, please contact Sally or Laura Jestes.

We also discussed the status of the acquisition of the vacant lots from the Diocese. I will lead a Capital Campaign with a committee. Please let me know if you will help, either by contributing or being on the Committee. My best contact information is: kirkandgm@comcast.net or 1.916.859.0942.

We had candid and robust conversations on both our Homeless Ministry and our participation in "Believe Out Loud". Both of those conversations will continue at future Vestry meetings. If you have thoughts on either of these topics, please share them with a Vestry member and Dean Baker.

As I have said in the past, Vestry meetings remind me of the vibrant and active nature of our faith community. Living in this type of community can be challenging. The way forward is not always clear or easy, but if we work together in and honest and trusting way, our best days are in the future.
