"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Jerry Pare'Our current class of Stephen Ministry trainees completed their course work this last Monday. The course, in which the trainies study on Monday evenings from September through May, prepares them for pastoral ministry inside and outside of the Trinity Cathedral family. Many of us have heard of Stephen Ministers. Some of us have taken advantage of their ministry of listening and companionship when we need it the most.   Trinity Cathedral has one of the largest and most effective Stephen Ministry programs in the United States. We thank Winnie and Bob Gaines for their untiring efforts to grow and sustain it. If you think you have need of a Stephen Minister, please contact Cherie or Dana Chamness or Susan Wilson. They are the current leaders who assess and assign. If you think you might want to get involved in this ministry, you can also contact them. And do not fear, they enthusiastically recruit candidates during the summer and early fall!

There are many other ministries at Trinity that benefit from the training provided through the Stephen Ministry program. Catechumenate sponsors do much of the same things as Stephen Ministers - they listen to and journey with those adults on the path toward baptism and confirmation. They are not expected to teach but rather to listen and share their faith. Many of our "licensed" ministries (eucharistic visitor, lay preacher, catechist and worship leader) have a "pastoral component" among the expectations for being licensed. Trinity's Stephen Ministry training can be a way to help those called to one or more of these ministries meet this expectation. Our lay chaplains are another ministry for which this pastoral element is very important. Those involved as "listeners" in the Listening Campaign use listening skills that are taught and practiced in Stephen Ministry training. In short, Stephen Ministry training is critical as we continue to become "a growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world." If you haven't already become a Stephen Minister, I urge you to pray about it and consider making time this coming fall and winter for a very beneficial experience of growth into discipleship.

Vocal Arts Ensemble
Vocal Art Ensemble "Inkspell"

Friday, May 11th at 7:30 pm

On Friday, May 11th at 7:30 pm, the Vocal Art Ensemble (VAE) will present  Inkspell: Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry, an a capella choral program encountering choral wizards such as Debussy, Whitacre, and Vaughan Williams.

"I feel choral music is richer than many other types of music," says director Tracia Barbieri, "because it has lyrics-which bring additional meaning and beauty to already beautiful music."
Celebrating the fact that these lyrics are frequently famous poems, the program will combine varied musical flavors and textures that set poetry from masters Frost, Rumi, Shakespeare, and more.

Barbieri has also engaged the assistance of local theatrical director and teacher Russell St Clair.  Collaborating with choir members who will lend their voices to the spoken word, Barbieri and St Clair have developed dramatic-poetic interludes to "conjure an alchemy of song and stage," according to Barbieri.

"Inkspell" is the final concert in our 2011-2012 Cathedral Music Series, and a suggested donation of $6-20 will be collected at the door.

TREE LogoTREE Tip

by Ann Rothschild

Clotheslines and Handprints.

I'm in Nashville at my daughter's house with two small children and four adults in the house and oh my, the laundry! Two working parents who don't have time to hang out clothes and who roll their eyes when I start in about electricity, fueled by coal-fired power plants supplied with coal from mountain top removal! But they have a large back garden with trees and I strung up a clothesline and begged them to let me hang out laundry at least while here. So maybe I score a Green Clothes LineHandprint.

The Handprint is the idea of Professor Gregory Norris at the Harvard School of Public Health. We learn about our impact on the planet from life-cycle assessments (LCAs), which show us our carbon footprint. If everyone on the planet lived as most of us do, we would need four planets to support us. Check your footprint on www.myfootprint.org or any of the ecological footprint sites.

But this knowledge can be depressing, so Norris decided to emphasize our positive actions with the notion of the Handprint. His website is www.handprinter.org.

A note on his site: if 25 % of U.S. households used just 10 fewer plastic bags per month, we would save 2.5 billion bags a year. That's just one of every four people...tell your friends... and use 10 fewer bags every month.

What is your Handprint?

NorCal AIDS Cycle
May 17 -20

Hi everyone!

At long last, NorCal AIDS Cycle 2012 is almost here!  On Thursday morning, May 17th, 130 riders plus support crew, will gather at Folsom Lake/Beals Point to start our 330 mile bike ride through Northern California.  We have all trained hard, and are ready!  I've been happy with my own training, with my consistent weekly mileage exceeding a hundred miles.  And no cashing this year!

Red BaronOn the fund-raising front, I am pleased to have raised over $5,000, and our group total now exceeds $200,000. Last year our group fund-raising total exceeded a quarter-of-a-million dollars, so we still have a way to go to achieve that goal again.

I wish to express my deepest thanks for your continuing support in this endeavor.  I am grateful for your generosity, which benefits agencies in the Sacramento Area who serve those suffering from HIV/AIDS.  For those of you who have pledged your support, but haven't quite gotten around to it... NOW is the time!  Just click this link to make your donation.  Every contribution, no matter how small or large, makes a huge difference to someone you or I will likely never meet.

Thank you!
David Link
Help me ride to fight HIV/AIDS in Northern CA!

Hi Everyone!

I can't believe the NorCal AIDS Cycle is a week away! I'll soon be joining 120+ other riders on a pedal powered tour of Northern California. On top of that, I'm less than $100 away from my goal of raising $2,000 and the organization as a whole has raised over $200,000 so far. Gayle Monroe

If you've been considering making a donation, now's the time to do it. Click on my link below to make an online donation and help me make it past the $2K mark.

Thanks to everyone who has pitched in with donations and/or support in other ways. I could not be doing this without the encouragement from my friends and family.

I'm looking forward to the ride and the experience...and the food ;-)

Thanks,

Hosted by Washington National Cathedral, the event will be moderated by David Crabtree, news anchor at WRAL-TV in North Carolina and an ordained deacon.  Framing the conversation on the Anglican Five Marks of Mission, the questions to be explored are: "What does Mission mean to me"; and "What does mission look like in the world."  "I look forward to a stimulating conversation with Archbishop Tutu, and am very grateful for this opportunity to prompt wider conversation about God's mission," Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori stated.  The May 19 event is the first in a series of discussions about mission with the Presiding Bishop and other prominent religious leaders.

Join with Brother Mark and Katherine Gaffey as we use Scripture and art to look at the stories of people who encountered the risen Jesus the Christ. From 1:00 - 3:30pm we will prayerfully look at these Gospel stories.

If you want to join us just for the prayer service of The Stations of the Light, find us in the Parish Center--as we hope to begin this service at 3:30pm.
