TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!

A couple of weeks ago we had Youth Sunday, where we feature children and children in our worship service. One highlight of this annual event is our youth preachers. This year we had two, Rachel Lopez and Kelsie Schroer-Echandia. If you missed them, I encourage you to click on their names and watch these remarkable members of the Cathedral.
I would like to mention a few other items that are related to our children and teenagers. Our diocese has a remarkable camp at Lake Tahoe, called Camp Noel Porter. They run week-long camps designed for children from six years old through 12th grade. If you have children or grandchildren, I encourage you consider this as an option this summer. It is a great camp.
I would also like to invite you to Camp Noel Porter's Cinco De Mayo fundraiser this Saturday at Trinity Cathedral at 5:30. The cost is only $20 per adult, $8 for children and $50 for families. It will include great food, a silent auction and other activities.
Finally, I encourage you to come to our Baccalaureate service this Sunday at 4:00 pm. It is a good opportunity to honor our graduates as they prepare for the next exciting chapter in their lives.
We are blessed at Trinity to not only have a variety of programs for children and youth, but also to have these remarkable individuals as part of our congregation.
Blessings,
Brian Baker +
Dean of the Cathedral

Trinity Spirits Softball Team WINS!
Your Trinity Spirits Co-Rec softball team opened league play on Tuesday, May 1st, with back-to-back wins against Capitol City Church and Macedonia Baptist Church. Bats were hot in the first game and there were some excellent defensive plays made. Our bats weren't as strong in the second game, but we had key hits to bring in runs. Defense was even stronger in the second game and included a 5-3 double play! Something of a rarity in recreation softball!
Way to go Spirits! Keep up the good work, good sportsmanship and good fellowship!
Come out and cheer for us at our next game on Tuesday, May 8, 7:00pm at Grant Park against Faith Presbyterian. Follow this link for a printable, full schedule of games.
And don't forget the Blessing of the Gloves (for anyone and everyone who is playing ball this season) this Sunday at the 9 and 11:15 services. |

Choral Evensong for Eastertide
TONIGHT, May 3, at 6:00 pm
Please join us for our next Choral Evensong service today, May 3rd at 6:00 pm.
The Cathedral Choir will sing music by Henry Ley, Iain Quinn, John Stainer, and Healey Willan. and will conclude with the beautiful anthem "Now the God of Peace," composed by Gerald Knight for the consecration of Geoffrey Fisher as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1945.
Evening Prayer, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is a service that has deep roots in the worship of the church. It is mainly derived from the monastic offices in the middle ages, but it also has features that go back to the earliest period of the Christian church. The heart of the service is the regular
recitation of the Psalms, and the systematic reading from the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
As is customary in churches with a choral tradition, the service is adorned with musical settings of the psalms, canticles, and anthems that come from the great repertoire of church music from the Renaissance to the present time. The congregation participates through active listening and meditation. Thus we join in offering to God our worship, which is part of a much greater whole: the worship of the Church of God in every part of the world.
Please share with us in this time of music, prayer, and quiet!

Vocal Art Ensemble "Inkspell"
Friday, May 11th at 7:30 pm On Friday, May 11th at 7:30 pm, the Vocal Art Ensemble (VAE) will present Inkspell: Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry, an a capella choral program encountering choral wizards such as Debussy, Whitacre, and Vaughan Williams. "I feel choral music is richer than many other types of music," says director Tracia Barbieri, "because it has lyrics-which bring additional meaning and beauty to already beautiful music."
Celebrating the fact that these lyrics are frequently famous poems, the program will combine varied musical flavors and textures that set poetry from masters Frost, Rumi, Shakespeare, and more. Barbieri has also engaged the assistance of local theatrical director and teacher Russell St Clair. Collaborating with choir members who will lend their voices to the spoken word, Barbieri and St Clair have developed dramatic-poetic interludes to "conjure an alchemy of song and stage," according to Barbieri.
"Inkspell" is the final concert in our 2011-2012 Cathedral Music Series, and a suggested donation of $6-20 will be collected at the door.

The Stations of the Light
Saturday May 19, 1:00-5:00pm
St. Francis Roman Catholic Church Parish Center (Entrance at K St. door - across the street from the church at 26th & K)
Join with Brother Mark and Katherine Gaffey as we use Scripture and art to look at the stories of people who encountered the risen Jesus the Christ. We know that the traditional Stations of the Cross before Easter seem to focus on sinfulness and fear--have you ever heard of the Stations of the Light? These post-Easter Stations focus on our blessing and God's great Love.
From 1:00 - 3:30pm we will prayerfully look at these Gospel stories.
If you want to join us just for the prayer service of The Stations of the Light, find us in the Parish Center--as we hope to begin this service at 3:30pm.
Free will donation....No need to register, yet you might want to send Mark an email to help in planning: brothermark@att.net
