TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!

We have two exciting inter-faith opportunities this coming week. The first connects Christians, Muslims and Jews in order to work on volunteer projects and foster community. Trinity Cathedral is partnering with Salam, Congregation B'nai Israel and the Capital Christian Center in a Multi-faith Volunteer Program. The program includes periodic meetings of interested individuals where we build community, share information about our faith traditions, and plan volunteer opportunities for members of our congregations. I will be hosting an informational meeting this Sunday at 10:15am in the Assembly Area.
The second event is the launching of Tibet House California. Ravi Verma, whose Tibetan Buddhist group meets at Trinity Cathedral on Wednesday evenings has spoken with the Dalai Lama and has received authorization to open a center that will help people understand the culture of Tibet, support Tibet and foster dialog between scientists and scholars of Buddhism. While Tibet House California is an organization that is separate from Trinity Cathedral, and will include offices that are not located at the Cathedral, Trinity Cathedral is the venue for the launch event. We will also likely be hosting the speakers and presenters that are brought to Sacramento by Tibet House. If you are interested in Tibet or Buddhism, I encourage you to attend.
Blessings,
Brian Baker +
Dean of the Cathedral

Senior Warden's Report:
The April Vestry Meeting

by Kirk Bone, Sr Warden
The April Vestry meeting was a busy, full meeting. We ran past our scheduled 8:30 adjournment time for the first time in my two years on the Vestry. [Click here to see a draft of the minutes.]
As is our practice, we began this meeting with an opening prayer and a Prayer report. This month's leader was Carolyn Conrad.
Adriana Echandia, as Vestry Chaplain, led a Bible study discussion which was based on the Lessons Appointed for use on the Third Sunday of Easter. This time allows all of us to become centered and is a reminder of our purpose in attending Trinity Cathedral.
Our next item was a discussion about moving forward with the negotiation and fund raising necessary to purchase from the Diocese the two vacant lots across the alley. The acquisition of these two lots by the parish will enable our future expansion efforts to be comprehensive and flexible. The Vestry authorized the Dean to move forward with the negotiation with the Diocese and to raise the funds necessary to purchase the lots. In addition, the Vestry instructed the Dean to arrange for a meeting with previous donors to the Building Fund. We should all thanks Bishop Beisner for the fair price-$80,000- and Bob Gaines for his leadership. I believe that this is an important step for our future at our current location. You will be hearing more about this over time.
We next discussed our space challenges. I view this issue like a tube of toothpaste-a push on one spot will force something to pop out in another place. The specific item was space for the choir. David Rickert, your Junior Warden, is leading the effort to find a "win/win/win" solution. The underlying issue is that we have more programs that need space than we have space-a good problem.
We next deliberated and endorsed Steve Skiffington's candidacy to become a Deacon. Steve is completing the second year of his three-year training program. Your prayers for Steve as he moves through his life altering process will be appreciated.
Shireen Miles introduced us to "Believe Out Loud". We will discuss and likely take action at our May meeting. If you have any questions, I am certain that Shireen will be happy to answer them.
Finally we had a robust discussion about our Ministry to the Homeless. We will discuss this matter at our May meeting. I encourage you to share your thoughts on this Ministry with Vestry members, Dean Baker and Jerry Paré in advance of our May meeting.
This month's meeting reminded me that Trinity is a vibrant and active community. Your vestry discussed another candidate for Holy Orders, acquiring land to prepare for the future, our immediate space challenges, our participation in "Believe Out Loud" and our Ministry to the Homeless. All of these discussions are a byproduct of an active and vibrant community. |

Choral Evensong for Eastertide
Thursday, May 3 at 6:00 pm
Choral Evensong is one of the most beautiful liturgical and musical traditions of the Anglican church. The Cathedral Choir will sing music by Henry Ley, Iain Quinn, Healey Willan, and Gerald Knight, and the officiant will be the Revered Canon Britt Olson. The service is based around the majestic language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and includes readings from scripture, the chanting of psalms and canticles, and prayers. Evensong is a perfect way to wash away the busy-ness and stress of the day, and come into the nearer presence of God.
