"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Kirk Bone, Sr. Warden

Kirk Bone,

Senior Warden

I would like to welcome to the Vestry our new members elected at the Annual Meeting: Tom Robbins, David Rickert, Kelly Boutwell, Sally Smith, Loren Weatherly and Chris Sanft. These new members join current Vestry members Pat Hill, Mary Hustler, Susan Van Dyke, Adriana Echandia, Carolyn Conrad, George Henry, Burt Douglass and Laura Jestes.

The retreat was held at the Mercy Center in Auburn whose setting and environment encourage reflection and focus. The facility allows you to break away from the day to day hustle and bustle of everyday life. I encourage anyone needing a break to visit the Center for a couple of days-it's relatively inexpensive, convenient, the accommodations are comfortable and the food is excellent.

An important part of the Retreat is spiritual formation. The spiritual journey is always very personal. The highlight for me was our renewal of the Baptismal covenant. I want to thank Canon Lynell Walker, Susan Van Dyke and Laura Jestes for all their work and thought in making this part of the retreat special.

In addition to spiritual formation, the highlights of our time together were: the selection of a Junior Warden and Vestry Chaplain, a discussion of goals for the coming year and deliberation about two candidates for Holy Orders.

Please congratulate David Rickert and Adriana Echandia (from now on referred to as Axe) as Junior Warden and Vestry Chaplain. We are blessed to have such talented and committed people amongst us.

Our priorities for the coming year include developing a Planned Giving program and a wish list of improvements to our existing facilities. Both were mentioned in the Dean's address at the Annual Meeting. You will be hearing lots about both during the next year and I encourage you to participate in both activities.

An important responsibility of the Vestry is to deliberate about candidates for Holy Orders. At the retreat we discussed the candidacies of Virginia McNeely and Susan Van Dyke. Virginia is finishing up her journey and we hope she will join us as Deacon later this year; Susan is beginning her journey. Your prayers and support for both of them will be appreciated.

The week of the Annual Meeting and Vestry retreat reaffirmed to me the special nature of the community we have at Trinity Cathedral.

The Benefits of Solar Leasing, and

an Update on Fracking.

By Ann Rothschild

We recently got a quote from a company called Sungevity, offering to give a free evaluation of our house to see if leasing solar roof panels would be feasible.  Unfortunately,  tall trees shade our roof, so we don't qualify.  But it seems like a good idea for others in less shaded neighborhoods.  Go to  www.sungevity.com/solar-lease.   How super to be able to go solar without the cost of up-front installation and purchase.  They promise it will lower your power bills.  You will still get an electricity bill, but it will be smaller, and you will pay a monthly solar electric bill.  Might be worth a try!  If anyone decides to try this, can you let me know how it works?

One of the films TREE is showing during its Lenten Film Series is called Gasland (March 22nd)--about fracking.  Fracking?  That's hydraulic fracturing of under-earth rock by injecting water, sand and chemicals deep down, to literally fracture the rock and release natural gas.  It is controversial because fracking has caused air pollution, contamination of ground and surface water, and the release of much methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The energy companies refuse to divulge the chemicals they use.  However, in August 2011, the Secretary of Energy's Advisory Board on Natural Gas issued a report calling for more oversight, regulation, and transparency, including disclosure of chemicals used.  The report states, "Absent effective control, public opposition will grow, thus putting continued production at risk."    Public opposition--that's you and I, people.  We have power, and we must be informed and active in protecting our resources.  Water--so basic and yet, do we know what goes into it? Has the call for regulation and better practices produced any results yet?  Come to see the Lenten films shown by TREE to start your education.
