"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!
Brian
Last Sunday evening we had a great annual dinner and meeting.  I am grateful for Jerry Pare', the table hosts and everybody who worked hard to make it a success.  I'm also grateful for those who were willing to be candidates for vestry or delegates to diocesan convention.  You can see my presentation on the mission of the Cathedral here.

Tonight at 7pm I will begin teaching a class on the history and theology of the early church.  I have selected Joseph Lynch's Early Christianity: A Brief History as our text.  I will introduce the class tonight and in future classes we will discuss reading assignments.  This is one of several great classes available as part of our Thursday Night at the Cathedral program.

Please hold the the vestry in your prayers this weekend.  We will be at the Mercy Center in Auburn for our annual retreat.

Finally, I invite you to a Holy Lent.  There are many good resources in this enewsletter to help you on your Lenten journey.

The Great Litany

 The Preacher is

The Rev. Canon Lynell Walker

Notes from Nancy...

The Jed Smith Community:

It came to our attention at Christmas time that many families in the Jed Smith community do not have money for paper goods and soap and detergent. Many of the moms asked for toilet paper for Christmas. As one of your Lenten Take Ups, please pick a flower or two from the Family Ministries bulletin board in the Great Hall and bring the items you chose to church and put them in Nancy Tennyson's office sometime in Lent. We will distribute them to the families. The items include toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dishwashing detergent, diapers, and laundry detergent.  These items are sure to help the families.

Save the date for a Mother's Day Tea on Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale in April.

IMPORTANT Notice:
Policy for Fundraising for Outside Organizations at Trinity Cathedral

Members who want to raise funds by selling items or soliciting donations for non-Trinity organizations (e.g. scouts, walkathons, etc.) are welcome to do so at a table set on the perimeter of the Great Hall.
  • The table must not block entrances to classrooms, restrooms or the kitchen.

  • Signs may be put on the table only.

  • People participating in the fundraising should remain at the table and allow people to approach them, rather than circulating through the Great Hall soliciting contributions.

  • Tables in front of the sets of double doors will be used for church activities only.
If you would like to use a table call Dana Chamness  at 916- 446-2513 to reserve one. The custodians will try to have it set up for you on Sunday morning.

Please join the Cathedral Choir for our next service of Choral Evensong. For the season of Lent, the music takes on a quieter, more solemn tone.  Included will be the beautiful "fauxbourdon" setting of the evening canticles  by Thomas Morley. The verses alternate between plainsong (sometimes called "Gregorian" chant, and Morley's lovely harmonized verses. Also included will be music by Thomas Tallis and John E. West.  Please join us for a time to sing away the busy-ness of the day, with a beautiful, meditative service.

Empty Bowls
A River City Food Bank Fundraiser
March 5 & 6

Empty Bowls, to be held at the Sacramento Convention Center on Monday evening, March 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m., and Tuesday, March 6, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., will raise funds for River City Food Bank, a non-profit that serves anyone in need in Sacramento by providing them with emergency food and/or housing assistance.  River City is the food bank that burned down in October 2010.

The evening event is $60 per ticket, while the luncheon is just $30 per ticket.  You will get the chance to pick out a handmade bowl made by students and artists from throughout the region.  Both events feature a choice of soups, and the evening event also includes hors d'oeuvres and wine. It's a simple concept and a simple meal with an important message: many bowls are going empty.

Tickets usually sell quickly, so don't wait too long!  Tickets are available online at http://www.rivercityfoodbank.org/empty-bowls/ or you can buy them at the Cathedral Bookshop at 2620 Capitol Avenue, or the Avid Reader at the Tower, 1600 Broadway.

Canon Link and the Red Baron ride again!

The Red BaronLast May I participated in the NorCal AIDS Cycle, a 330 mile/four day bike ride, which raises funds for HIV/AIDS treatment, services, and education in the Sacramento area.  I was blessed to have raised $4,440 with the group total exceeding a quarter-of-a-million dollars!  I had planned to ride in honor of my friend and former Cathedral Choir member Ken Piercy.  After twenty years of struggling with AIDS, Ken died peacefully just two weeks before the ride,  so I rode in his memory.

I have decided that once again, I'm going to tackle those 330 miles on a bicycle this coming May.  Many of you were very generous in supporting me in the ride last year, and I know with your help, I can exceed my fund-raising and meet my goal of raising $5,000 for NCAC in 2012.

To donate directly to Canon Link's NorCal AIDS Cycle 2012, click here:  http://norcalaidscycle.org.kintera.org/2012/sierracanon

I would also like to invite you to attend a benefit organ concert at Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, March 11th at 4:00 pm.  The program will include favorites such as the "Toccata and Fugue in d minor" by Johann Sebastian Bach, "Adagio in g minor" by Tomas Albinoni, and much more.  And, there will be an opportunity to donate to NorCal AIDS Cycle 2012, if you haven't done so already.

Thank you for your support!!
