"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!
Brian

Every Thursday night a group of people, members and non-members, gather in the kitchen to prepare dinner.  Different crews take shifts so people won't get burned out.  They prepare dinner for anybody who wants to come.  Most of the guests are homeless folks, but those eating also include the cooks, people coming to Thursday night classes or those who just attended the Thursday evening service.  Last week I sat with a guy who wasn't homeless, he has an apartment.  He just doesn't have enough money for food.  It has been happening long enough now that there is a sense of normalcy.  People know one another.  Comfortable conversation is easier.  Folks pitch in after dinner putting up tables and chairs.  They know how to help and are often eager to do so.

Last Thursday the crew received a thank-you note from one of the guests addressed to the "TrinityTNACD Thanks Cathedral Thursday eve. kitchen staff."  It read, "On behalf of all of us who you so tirelessly feed, hug, encourage & inspire, week after week . . . Thursday after Thursday, etc. . . We Thank You So Much!!"  I saw it because it was promptly put on the refrigerator in the kitchen.  I know the kitchen crew does not do this ministry for the gratitude, but it know they appreciated the card.  For me the note was a symbol of the "family" that is being created on Thursday nights.  If you haven't been, I encourage you to show up some Thursday.  If you are shy like me, you can sit and eat quietly.  You don't have to carry a conversation.  Or if you like, you could simply ask, "how was your day?"  You may be blessed by the response you hear.

Sixth Sunday after
the Epiphany

 The Preacher is

The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker

Notes from Nancy...

The Jed Smith Community:

It came to our attention at Christmas time that many families in the Jed Smith community do not have money for paper goods and soap and detergent. Many of the moms asked for toilet paper for Christmas. As one of your Lenten Take Ups, please pick a flower or two from the Family Ministries bulletin board in the Great Hall and bring the items you chose to church and put them in Nancy Tennyson's office sometime in Lent. We will distribute them to the families. The items include toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dishwashing detergent, diapers, and laundry detergent.  These items are sure to help the families.

Be sure to get your ticket for the Shrove Tuesday Mardis Gras Pancake Supper tickets will be on sale in the Great Hall. We will also make and bury the Alleluia Banner that night.

The Family Service is next week at 9:00 in the Great Hall.

Save the date for a Mother's Day Tea on Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale in April.

Why don't you plan on attending a Bible Study this Sunday morning?  We are focusing on the Gospel of Mark. This week we will focus on another story of Jesus healing the sick.  Jesus cures a leper.  What does this passage mean to you.  What does it mean for you?  Is it Good News for you right here? Right now? We have been invited to journey with Jesus and his disciples, to listen, to see, to learn.  Come along!   Journey with Jesus is also for those who seek baptism, confirmation or formal reception into the Episcopal Church.

You have two different opportunities to discuss this passage:  9 AM and 11:15 AM.  Both meet in the Conference Room.  Both will focus on the same passage.  For more information stop by the Conference Room or contact Jerry Paré (446-2513; jpare@trinitycathedral.org).

Haiti

Whether we say it in English, Creole or French, thank you to the many people who have pitched in to help rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral in Haiti. Already many of the people sitting near you on Sunday have made their contribution toward our goal of $20 per worshiping member. If you've been meaning to join in, make your donation today.   Just make a notation on the memo line of your check that you are supporting Haiti.

Many hands make light work, or as they say in Haiti, "Men anpil chay pa lou."  And to all of you who have already lent a hand, Mèsi.

Rebuild the Church in Haiti is a national, grass-roots effort of the Episcopal Church to lift up one of our own dioceses after a year of crushing natural disasters. For more information contact me at dvandyke876@sbcglobal.net  or go to http://www.trinitycathedral.org/pdfs/Haiti/FAQs.pdf

A Movie Invitation

TREE wishes you a holy and fulfilling Lent.  One of the many offerings you can make during Lent is to attend the film series that TREE is putting on for Thursday Night at the Cathedral, starting on February 23rd.

It is important to be informed when caring for the environment, and these films will inform and inspire so that we can live more consciously on our glorious planet.  They are an easy way to learn some facts and remember them too.

Our first film is The Last Mountain which is about a major source of our electricity: coal.  Almost half of U.S. electricity comes from the burning of coal, and whole mountains in Appalachia are blasted in order to produce that coal.  Local people are fighting for limits and regulations, since their water sources are poisoned and communities threatened, but large coal companies are rich and politically powerful.  Come to see how this plays out--it is not all miserable--there are solutions!

See the program posted on our bulletin board for synopses of the other films.
