TRINITY EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
e-News
"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!
I wanted to let you know of an important addition and change to our staffing at Trinity. Last year The Rev. Anne McKeever took over leadership of our junior and senior high youth groups. These ministries had previously been led by two lay youth leaders. Anne has done a great job. We have now increased her time as an employee of the Cathedral and she is now also responsible for coordinating Adult Spiritual Formation. Anne is a very good organizer and a gifted teacher and she is already serving well in this capacity. The Rev. Canon Lynell Walker, who had been responsible for this ministry is now responsible for Worship and Pastoral Care. When Canon Kathleen Kelly left, Lynell began working more heavily in these areas. Now she can focus her time there.
It is sometimes hard to get a clear picture of who does what on our clergy staff. It is complicated by the fact that there are several clergy volunteers that regularly help with our many worship services, but don't get introduced to the congregation through other activities. Here's a list of our active clergy:
The Rev. Dr. Brian Baker, Dean (full time)
The Rev. Canon Lynell Walker, Canon for Worship and Pastoral Care (full time, is as St. Paul's two Sunday's per month)
The Rev. Anne McKeever, Youth and Adult Spiritual Formation (part time)
The Rev. Canon Dr. Grant Carey, retired (part time)
The Rev. Canon Dr. Winnie Gaines, retired (part time)
Our volunteer clergy who participate in our services include:
The Rev. Robert Phillippi (Lutheran ELCA,)
The Rev. Jesse Vaughan and
The Rev. Peter Rodgers

Calling all Sponsors of Jed Smith Children
A few people have asked me if they could write to the child they sponsored for the Outdoor Science Camp in December.
I think it would be great if you would like to write a note to the child and let them know that you are interested in their education and especially what they learned at the camp. You may write a note to your child, place in in an envelope with the child's name on it and bring it to Nancy Tennyson's office. The notes will delivered to the school when we deliver Secret Pal gifts
Blessings,
Nancy Tennyson

We're Building More Than a Church

Did you know that nearly every Episcopal Church in Haiti sponsors a school? Since the earthquake, all the Episcopal schools have reopened, many under temporary shelters. Holy Trinity Cathedral is no exception. In a country where only 20% of the schools are government-supported and where 60% of school-aged children are not enrolled, your gift to Rebuild Our Church in Haiti will raise up more than the walls of a new cathedral. Your gift will help to build a foundation for the future leaders of one of our own dioceses. Thanks to all of you who have already joined this national, grass-roots effort.
If you've been meaning to join in, you now is the time. Write your check for $20 (or more) and drop it in the offering plate this Sunday. Don't wait, do it this week. The future leaders of the Church say, "Thank you."
For more information contact me at dvandyke876@sbcglobal.net or check out http://www.trinitycathedral.org/pdfs/Haiti/FAQs.pdf.
With thanks for our comminity,
Susan Van Dyke

Journey with Jesus
NEW DAY & TIMES TO SERVE YOU BETTER
Sundays at 9:00 - 10:15am or 11:15am - 12:30pm
Why don't you plan on attending a Bible Study this Sunday morning? We have two times: 9 AM and 11:15 AM. Both meet in the Conference Room. Both will study the same passage.
This week we will focus on Mark 1:21-28 (the same passage we hear at church this Sunday). You don't need to be a scripture scholar (like the scribes in the reading) to take part. We discuss what this passage means to each of us and to all of us. How does Jesus "teach with authority" in your life? What is the "so what?" of this passage for you?
Journey with Jesus is also for those who seek baptism, confirmation or formal reception into the Episcopal Church. For more information on Journey with Jesus contact Jerry Paré (446-2513; jpare@trinitycathedral.org). |

Candlemas Light Bearer |
Choral Evensong and Candlemas Procession
Thursday, February 2, 6:00pm
Celebrated since the fourth century, the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord, commemorates the journey of Jesus family to the temple, forty days after his birth, according to Jewish custom. St Luke recounts their encounter with the elderly Simeon, who tells Mary and Joseph that their son is the "light to lighten the gentiles, and glory of his people Israel." For hundreds of years, a candle-lit procession symbolizing that "light" became a part of the celebration, and the feast has come to be known in many places as "Candlemas."
On Thursday, February 2nd at 6:00 pm, the Trinity Cathedral Choir will sing our monthly service of Choral Evensong, preceded by a Candlemas procession from the Cathedral courtyard. The service will include music by John Stainer and Peter Aston, and will conclude with the stunning anthem "The Lamb" by English composer John Tavener.
Please join us for this beautiful and unique service! |
