"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Greetings!
What an amazing Christmas! I am so grateful for all who made the Christmas events so remarkable. From collecting sleeping bags, socks, etc., buying and wrapping Christmas presents for families, decorating and filling bags so each child at Jed Smith could get a gift, to decorating the Cathedral, making stunning garlands, planning and rehearsing music and pageants, to cooking food and bringing treats to share to printing and collating programs, the way many, many people work together to make Christmas so special is a clear witness of the incarnation of Christ's love. Thank you all once again for the gift of a remarkable Christmas.
Tomorrow (Friday) night we will end the season of Christmas, with a pageant and potluck supper. The pageant begins at 6pm. Nancy Tennyson, who is responsible for so much that happens at Christmas, tells me each year that this pageant is her favorite event of the season. Because it happens 12 days after Christmas, it gets to stand alone and isn't cluttered with all the other activities. I hope you are able to join us.

Creative Writing Class
Thursdays at 4:30pm
This year the fall term of Creative Writing will focus on the skills of storytelling. We will begin each class by hearing one of the great stories of the Old or New Testament as a model for reflection. Soon we discover that we too are stories waiting to be told. Every ordinary event of our life has similar characteristics that involve relationships, emotions, texture, plot and discovery. The class guidelines are that each participant is given an opportunity to write. All writing is considered to be fictional. All feedback is constructive and answers these questions: What is the strength of this piece? What images remain with you? What word or phrases stand out? This is a class geared toward helping both the novice and the experienced writer to put ideas on paper. It is NOT a class on grammar and form. All must write, all may/may not share what they have written with the class, all must keep confident that which is shared in class. Each class is a unit in itself. Drop-in participants are always welcome.

Trinity Outreach Ministry for
Advent and Christmas 2011
Happy New Year! It has been a very busy season and as I look back over the past few months our accomplishments are enormous.
We began the season with sending over 90 fourth, fifth and sixth graders to Sonora to an Outdoor Science Camp. Approximately 80 parishioners from Trinity Cathedral donated more than $6,000 to help cover the cost of the educational experience for the children. They students traveled to Sonora on December 12 and returned on December 17. The children are working on their thank you letters to the parishioners who donated to their camp experience.
We had Advent Ingathering's for warm clothing, sleeping bags, long underwear, food and toiletries for those in need. Each week we had baskets of items brought to the crèche to be passed on to charities who could give them out. We also supplied people coming to the cathedral with warm blankets, sleeping bags, dry socks and other essentials during the holidays.
Our Thursday Night ADVENTure in Giving Program, organized by Canon Lynell Walker, visited The Chateau to sing Christmas Carols, helped at the River City Food Bank and wrapped gifts for our "adopted" families.
Sunday School students, a Girl Scout Troop and some individuals at Trinity decorated 300 Holiday gift bags given to the students at Jed Smith School. Other parishioners filled the bags with books, socks, tooth brushes, toothpaste, toys and candy. Harry Kirn, a senior at McClatchy High school, chaired the purchasing of the items for the bags as well as the assembling and delivering of the gift bags. About 15 volunteers from Trinity plus Santa and his Elf helped deliver the bags to each child in each class at Jed Smith Elementary School.
On top of that, Trinity Cathedral was able to help 25 families for Christmas. Gifts of clothing, toys, bikes and food were provided for the families who were mostly from the Jed Smith neighborhood. We were helped by several community groups including, Girl Scout Troop 1029, California Montessori Project Fourth and Fifth grade class, Nancy Kilgore's group, Women Who Love Too Much, Zuda Yoga Studio, Telecommand Software and Services and over 40 parishioners of Trinity Cathedral.
While we all know there is still a lot of need in our community, the Trinity family has been blessed with the ability to help so many others in 2011. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who donated money, helped shop, wrap, sort and deliver the clothing, toys and food for the families. It was a job well done.
Christmas Blessings to you all.

| Join Episcopalians Rebuilding Haiti
Helping Our Brothers & Sisters at Home
Question: What's one of the largest dioceses of The Episcopal Church?
Answer: Haiti
That's right. The Diocese of Haiti, home to nearly 100,000 Episcopalians, is not a foreign diocese, but a member of The Episcopal Church just like our diocese. The earthquake of January 2010 wiped out 70% of Episcopal Church buildings in Haiti, but now they're building back. And you can help.
We heard about this effort while at Diocesan Convention in November. Now it is time to act to help our neighbors.
Over the next 6 weeks Trinity Cathedral Church will join churches across our diocese to help roll away the debris and rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral, the spiritual center of the Episcopal Church in Haiti. The goal set for our Diocese is $100,000. To reach that goal, we need a donation equal to $20 from each person who is a regular attendee on Sunday. It's the start of rebuilding the nation, and you can be part of it.
During the season of Epiphany we will be promoting this fundraising effort. We will have an ingatherings on February 12 and 19, but you can contribute anytime by writing a check with "Haiti" in the memo line. If you are able, consider contributing $40 to help the person who sits near you in church who may not be able to contribute. And watch for further news!
With sincere gratitude for all we are and have,
Susan Van Dyke

School Board to Honor Trinity Cathedral
Exciting news for Trinity Cathedral! Through efforts of the staff at Jed Smith Elementary School, Trinity Cathedral will be honored by the Sacramento City Unified School District Board at their meeting on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 pm. Many of you have worked very hard to help improve the lives of children in the Jed Smith community. I would love it if all of you could come to this event. There are so many volunteers who have worked many hours and many years to help with the Jed Smith students. I would like to have a great showing at this meeting.
The School Board meets at the Serna Center, 5935 47th Ave. off Highway 99, near Stockton Blvd.
Please plan to come. Let me know if you would like to car pool. We will meet in behind the Cathedral on Trinity Cathedral Lane at 5:45pm and car pool to the Serna Center.
Thank you for all of your efforts to help the students at Jed Smith.
